Although membership in broad diet categoriesis a standardfeature of community analysesof Neotropical birds, the bases for assignmentsto diet categoriesare usually not stated, or they are derived from anecdotal information or bill shape. We used notations of stomachcontents on museum specimenlabels to assessmembership in broad diet categories (“fruit only,” “ arthropods only,” and “fruit and arthropods”) for speciesof four families of birds in the Neotropics usually consideredto have a mixed diet of fruit and animal matter: trogons (Trogonidae), motmots (Momotidae), New World barbets (Capitonidae), and tou- cans (Ramphastidae). An assessmentof the accuracyof label data by direct comparison to independentmicroscopic analysis of actual stomachcontents of the same specimensshowed that label notations were remarkably accurate.The specimen label data for 246 individuals of 17 speciesof Trogonidae showed that quetzals (Pharomachrus)differ significantly from other trogons (Trogon) in being more fiugivorous. Significant differences in degree of fru- givory were found among various Trogonspecies. Within the Trogonidae, degreeof frugivory is strongly correlated with body size, the larger speciesbeing more frugivorous. The more frugivorous quetzals (Pharomachrus)have relatively flatter bills than other trogons, in ac- cordancewith predictions concerningmorphology of frugivores;otherwise, bill morphology correlated poorly with degree of fiugivory. An analysis of label data from 124 individuals of six speciesof motmots showed that one species(Electron platyrhynchum)is highly in- sectivorous,differing significantlyfrom two others that are more frugivorous(Baryphthengus martii and Momotus momota).

    LIFE HISTORY OF THE BLACK-THROATED TROGON BY ALEXANDER F. SKUTCH N Barro Colorado Island in Gatlin Lake, in the middle of the Isthmus of 0 Panama, I found my first twTo nests of the Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus) , in 1935. Both were destroyed by predators before the eggs hatched. Four years later, in the Valley of El General in southern Costa Rica, I found my third nest, which met a similar fate. In most of the succeeding years I have studied birds in the same region, where these trogons are not uncommon, and I have encountered five additional nests. With the exception of one which I did not see until the young were almost feathered, only the last was successful. This was situated on our farm in El General in April, 1958, and enabled me to round out a study begun 23 years earlier. The present paper is, then, a report of observations gathered over nearly a quarter of a century. The slowness of their accumulation is to be attributed to the diffi- culty of finding the nests of the majority of the birds that dwell in tropical rain-forest, and the discouragingly small proportion of these nests that yield living young. APPEARANCE AND RANGE One of the smaller members of its family, the Black-throated Trogon has a total length of about nine inches, of which well over half is accounted for by its long tail. The males’ predominant color is bright metallic green, which covers all the upper surface of head and body and likewise the chest.

Historically, research and monitoring of fl ora and fauna in the protected areas of the Maya Mountains Massif (MMM) of Belize have been conducted primarily by foreign scientists. This is par- ticularly true in areas such as the Bladen Nature Reserve (BNR) where its strict category of protection prevents even tourism as a means of alternative livelihoods for locals. Past studies have had little to no direct benefi ts (economic or educational) to buffer zone villages that border the BNR. What benefi ts that have been received are short-term in nature, and have had a strong negative impact on the local population’s appreciation of the protected areas themselves. Locals perceive the parks as a benefi t only for non-Belizeans. Our goal is to build capacity for avian conservation in the Maya Mountains by enhancing the links between protected areas and their surrounding communities. To achieve this goal, our project begins with a community-based alternative livelihood strengthening program for the development of a core group of avian technicians from buffer zone villages, and provides the tools for the acquisition of science based skills related to their work as parabiologists.

These species included both neotropical migratory and resident species, some of which were previously un-documented in the reserve. This intensive bird survey was the first of its kind in the Bladen Nature Reserve (BNR), and validated the previous bird studies that were done on a limited basis in this area in the past. Bird species were surveyed and identified by three methods: point counts, mist-net capture with mark-and-release (banding), and general observations. Table 1 provides a comprehensive list in taxonomical order of all bird species identified and also denotes species detected by mist-net and point count surveys. Table 2 contains the bird species detected by point counts and mist-nets only in alphabetical order. The 271 bird species identified during the project also includes three species designated as “near threaten” by the IUCN Red List of Threaten Species for Belize and the Maya Mountains.

Abstract: Oaxaca hosts one of the greatest biodiversity in México, occupying first place in avian diversity compared to other regions of the country. However, the area is undergoing serious problems such as high defor- estation rates, soil erosion and over exploitation and extinction of species. These factors have all contributed to the current loss of biodiversity. Also, biological inventories are still incomplete. One of the least explored sites is the semiarid zone of Tehuantepec isthmus, around the locality of Santa Maria del Mar, Oaxaca, México. The area includes floodable grasslands, mangrove areas and dry forest, providing a range of potential habitats for different species. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of temporal lakes on spatial and temporal composition of the avifauna in Santa Maria del Mar, in order to generate information regarding this group within the region and the state, and to understand the importance of flood areas for resident and transitory birds. We conducted 12 avifauna surveys between July 2006 and June 2008, and established two transects of 2km length in each of four habitat types (beach, grassland, dry forest, and mangrove).

    Tropical Birding - Trip Report Oaxaca: Birding the Heart of Mexico, March 2019 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Oaxaca: Birding the Heart of Mexico 6 – 16 March 2019 Isthmus Extension 16 – 22 March 2019 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report by Nick Athanas; photos are Nick’s unless marked otherwise Warblers were plentiful on this tour, such as the superb endemic Red Warbler March in much of the Northern Hemisphere was rather dreary, but in southern Mexico we enjoyed day after day of warm, sunny days and cool, pleasant evenings – it was a wonderful and bird-filled reprieve from winter for the whole group including me. The tour visited the dry Oaxaca Valley (rich in culture as well as endemics), the high mountains surrounding it, lush cloudforest and rainforest on the Gulf slope, and dry forest along the Pacific. This provided a great cross-section of the habitats and offered fantastic birds everywhere. Some favorites included Bumblebee Hummingbird, Dwarf Jay, Orange-breasted Bunting, and a daily fix of warblers, both resident and migrant, like the unique Red Warbler shown above. The extension took us east across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which serves as a natural species barrier. Numerous different species entertained us like Pink-headed Warbler, Rose-bellied Bunting, and a Nava’s Wren which put on an especially magnificent performance. Owling was a mixed bag, but our first attempt got us a spectacular Fulvous Owl, which was high up on the list of tour favorites.
