This documentary on BBC One Wales highlights the difficulties and problems of sleep deprivation through the eyes of insomniac and award-winning documentary maker Martin Read. Martin hasn’t slept properly for over 30 years and usually makes do with around three hours of sleep a night. Martin tracks his own life, and that of other sufferers over four months, giving a stark insight into what it’s like to live with chronic insomnia. Over time, Martin’s desperation for sleep has led him to becoming utterly dependent on sleeping tablets - only supposed to be used short term. But with the right help, he’s determined to stop taking them altogether. He meets leading experts in the field, including sleep expert Professor Colin Espie from Oxford University. Professor Espie is unequivocal about the importance of a good night’s sleep: “Sleep’s important, in the same way that oxygen, food and water are important. It’s just an essential for life. We can’t do without it,” he tells Martin. Martin meets others who suffer from this debilitating condition and investigates the techniques and treatments available that could help change their lives. Rose, from Swansea, hasn’t slept properly in nearly 50 years, and her whole life revolves around her insomnia. She can’t stay awake during cinema and theatre visits, so attends heavy metal gigs instead – where there’s no danger of nodding off. Vlogger Georgia hides her insomnia from the world and does most of the work on her online fashion business at night. She says she’s completely dependent on sleeping pills. Sioned Gwyn - [email protected] 2 THE 1900 ISLAND Thursday, 16 May BBC One Wales, 8pm The third episode of BBC One Wales’s landmark documentary, filmed on Llanddwyn Island sees how the four families, with a longing to escape the demands of the modern world are getting on as they head back over a 100 years. And after three weeks on the island, the community spirit is fragmenting as different priorities and approaches to life start to emerge. This week could be make or break on The 1900 Island. The Davies family of seven are struggling to make ends meet, and are quickly running out of supplies. Mum Lydia is getting desperate and asks the other families to donate some food. Neighbours are asked to gift eggs and vegetables, but not everyone shares the same vision about how best to help. As the weather improves, the men plan an extended fishing trip, for three days and two nights, leaving their wives and children home alone. With food scarce, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Gavin says, “We just need some bloody fish. I think it’s got to the point now where I’m not too concerned about what type of fish we catch.” · ● The 1900 Island is a co-production for BBC One Wales and BBC Two Gwen Eluned - [email protected] 3 WEATHERMAN WALKING: THE WELSH COAST Friday, 17 May BBC One Wales, 7.30pm Derek Brockway wraps up his latest series of Weatherman Walking with an 11-mile hike from Porthcawl to Southerndown. Beginning with a backdrop of crashing waves next to Porthcawl’s lighthouse, Derek commences his final walk at the Coastwatch station where he gives local sailors a weather forecast. He then joins the lifeboat crew next door in a timed drill before carrying on along the coast. His trek takes in Trecco Bay and Newtown beach before he crosses the Merthyr Mawr dunes where he attempts some sand sledging. It’s then on to Ogmore where Derek gives his legs a rest and sees the local landscape from horseback. After trying his hand at fishing with a sea angler, he embarks on the final section of his stroll to Southerndown. Accompanied by members of the Welsh Women Walking group, Derek draws the series to a close on the idyllic Dunraven Beach. Derek Brockway says “This walk isn’t too far for me to travel and I really enjoyed this one as it took in the village of Merthyr Mawr and its thatched cottages. Visiting the dunes there felt like being transported to another planet and I had a lot of fun sledging down the highest dune known as the ‘Big Dipper’. The walk had a lot of variety and it was lovely to end on the beach looking out over the Bristol Channel.” Jordan Harris - [email protected] 4 POBOL Y CWM Llun, Mercher, Gwener; Mai 13, 15, 17; BBC Cymru ar S4C, 8pm Mawrth, Iau; Mai 14, 16, 7.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday; May 13, 15, 17; BBC Wales on S4C, 8pm Tuesday, Thursday; May 14, 16, 7.30pm Mae calon Colin yn gwaedu dros Britt ond mae hi’n awyddus i siarad gyda Garry.
