Charles Neville (vocals, tenor sax, flute) Facedwithpossible paralysis afterbacksurgery inOctober2001, band leaderandeldest with (vocals keyboards) brotherArtNeville(nicknamed"Poppa Funk")realizedthathewasn't livinglifetothefullest. Arttold his brothers, "Ifeel likeI've been walkin' in the shadow of life"duringhis recovery. Hiscomment, alongwithinspiration fromAaron Neville'sprivate poetry/journalentries, triggered a much-neededreunion thatleadtothisspirited October19release.

'Walkin'intheShadowofLife'(NevilleNation/BackPorch/EMI)reflectstheNevilleBrothers' lifeexperiences, includinggrowingupinoneofthe toughest NewOrleans neighborhoods, thethirteenth ward,survivingthe musicindustrymachine,andovercomingtheirstruggles withdrugs.Thebreakbeat-infused,thirteen-trackmasterpiecerevivesthetrademarkNeville Brothers sound.'Walkin'inthe ShadowofLife'revisits thespiritoftheir1989million-selling 'YellowMoon'record notonlybycontinuingtotelltheirstory, butalsobyreturningtotheir classic funk foundation.

Several tracks, such as "StreetsAreCallin',""YourLife(Fallen Soldiers)," and "Carrythe Torch"discuss lifeonthestreet. GrowingupintheCalliopeprojectsofNewOrleansand strugglingwithgangsanddrugs,theband membershavecomeoutstrong;theyareall currently sober and completely focusedon music.
