PRESIDENTS MESSAGE EVENT CALENDAR Peter Mackins

February I have often remarked and have heard the same thoughts from others that “Dollar for dollar the Corvette is the best sports car in the world”. Intuitively, that has always 5th Super Bowl Party [Santa Barbara] seem to be the case but if it is really so, by how much? I decided it was time to test it

7th General Meeting out. Okay, I’m a bean counter and probably have too much time on my hands but [Goleta] here’s what I did. I took six vehicles at random which in the opinion of most would be 18th Runch Run—Jalama considered super cars. The cars I have selected are the Aston Martin Vanquish, Bugat- Beach [Lompoc] ti Veyron, Ferrari 488 GTB, Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren 650S, and the Porsche 911

26th Daytona 500 Party Turbo. With the exception of the Bugatti, these vehicles are not the top model for [Goleta] their respective makes. However, generally selecting the top of the line vehicle would add even more cost in March relation to the added performance. The source for the information was Car and Driver. Below are the results

[Goleta] Zero to 60: Since the zero to 60 performance is better the lower it is I established a base of 10 seconds. 18th? www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com ACTIVITIES COLUMN Tony Megowan th January, we had the Griffith Park Observatory on Saturday the 14 [See article following Activities]. About the Tower Tours, I have changed my retirement date to 31 Mar so I will be able to conduct the tours in Feb and Mar for those that are interested.

For February, on the 5th, Steve and Linda Petersen will host their Annual Super Bowl Party. Plan to arrive around 2:00 pm and bring money (small bills) if you want to play in the pools. Also bring your own drinks other than soda or water. They will have soda and water. Bring a dish to share, dessert, main dish on snacks. There will be sandwiches and a salad from Costco. The Jalama Beach Runch Run is planned on Saturday the 18th. We will plan to leave Timbers in Goleta at 8:30 and should be there by about 10:15 or so. We will then have lunch at the Jalama Beach Grill.

Hib and Sandy will be hosting their Daytona Party again this year on Sunday, February, 26th. See flyer to the right for more details. Daytona Party Flyer

For the month of March, we will have a run to the Estrella Warbird Mu- seum in Paso Robles on the 4th. This is now a one- day run and I will have further information in the next newsletter. There is a good chance another club will be joining us for this run. We are also adding a wine event in March— Wino’s Gone Wild. This will be at Thore Edgren’s home [see CCSB Roster for address] on either the 18th or 19th of March. We will sample Central Cali- fornia Syrah’s while enjoying a (hopefully) beautiful day with friends and colleagues. We will plan on or- dering pizza and have everyone attending bring a side dish, appetizer, salad, or dessert.

For April we will have the Warner Bros Studio/Bob's Big Boy Run on the 2nd. I will also have more details on this as it gets closer. We did this run a couple of years ago and had a blast.

Continued I hope to see all of you on our Event runs scheduled for 2017. Page 5

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com EVENT RECAP: GRIFFITH PARK RUN Tony & Paula Megowan Our first run of 2017 was interesting to say the least. Paula and yours truly were joined by Dennis Trammel and Lise, Mike Christensen, Art and June Aldritt, Ray Tracy and Terri, and our illustrious president Peter Mackins. We could not have asked for better weather and this turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. As we approached the Griffith Park Observatory, we found that half of Los Angeles had the same idea. Griffith Park was PACKED with hikers and others just enjoying the beautiful weather after all the rain. We could not find parking within 2 miles of the Observatory. But we are a flexible bunch and our President is a quick thinker. After a mini board meeting (OK just Peter and I), we made a command decision and decided to visit the Columbia Memo- rial Space Center in Downey. Peter had men- tioned this as a possible run and now it became a reality for most of us.

Art and June were able to find parking close to the Observatory so they were able to enjoy the day there. The rest of us (minus Ray and Terri who went on to Torrance) headed off to Downey and after a short drive we arrived at our destination. The building housing the Space Center was the same building that housed the production line for the Apollo Command Module used to take the astronauts to the moon and back. And back in WWII, it was an aircraft manufacturing plant for North American.

The Space Center is geared more towards kids but we had a great time anyway. We made paper airplanes and launched them to see whose went the furthest (that would be mine), dropped parachutes to see who could get closest to the target (if I re- Ruh Roh—Helmet Hair member right that was Paula), and rolled marbles in their gravity well used to explore orbital basics.

Afterwards we headed to the oldest existing McDonalds for lunch. After lunch, we all headed off on our own. Over- all, we had a good time even with the change in plans.

Member Highlight: Sandy Halverson—OUR HAWAIIAN ADVENTURE See Story Below This was Hib’s first trip to the Islands. Our first stop was Oahu where visited the Pearl Harbor Memorials and took a personal tour below decks of the Battleship Missouri. The “Mighty Mo” is the sister ship to the USS Iowa which the Club visited a couple of years ago. Our tour guide was great and Hib, being a history buff, took it all in. We stayed at the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach and had a lot of those drinks with the little umbrellas along with a great dinner at Duke’s Waikiki. Good thing we just had to walk back thru the sand to our hotel.

The next day we took a quick flight to Maui where we rented a Jeep (That’s right--not a Chevy) and drove the entire “Road to Hana” which runs along the Maui coastline. We stayed overnight in Hana on the Black Sand Beach. The next day, we continued our adventure driving the part of the Hana Highway which is “forbidden” for rental cars. We saw the “Seven Pools”, Charles Lindbergh’s grave site and then continued on the sometimes one lane, mostly-asphalt-sometimes-dirt road. We even passed a sign that said “Green Bay Packer country”. The narrow road, sometimes with land- slides on one side and 500-foot cliffs on the other, were nerve-wracking. The were times when we had to back-up to a turn-out because someone was coming the other way. I was Continued Page 7

6

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com OUR HAWAIIAN ADVENTURE: CONTINUED glad Hib was driving. In spite of all this, the views were astonishingly Sandy Halverson beautiful and well worth the drive. We made it to Lahaina that night. I couldn’t believe how many Packers fans were there. We put whale watching on hold and took in the nail-biting, Packers/Cowboy game at Captain Jack’s (a popular Lahaina bar) and drank Maui Pineapple Wheat beer with other green shirts. What a game!

Our last stop was the Big Island where we visited our friends and former CCSB members, Andrew and Danielle Spitz and their two kids, Haley and Kendall. They were Club Members from 1999 to 2008 and moved to Hawaii five years ago. They have a 625- horsepower, su- percharged, 2002 Millenium Yellow Z06. Andrew and Hib took the car about six miles down to the beach to do a photo shoot for Corvette Magazine. On the way back up to Andrew’s house, they were having some high speed fun--you could hear that super- charged Z coming from miles away. The Spitzes’ also own a white ’89 Z51 Coupe. Some of you might remember Haley and how she would clean the Z06 with her dad for many a car show. Haley has a boatload of trophies for her hard work. Well, Haley is all grown up now and was at gym with boyfriend so she didn’t make the picture. However, her sister Kendall is in the picture above with her dog Clarabelle and into Photography so she and I were having fun shooting and comparing photos.

All in all, it was a wonderful vacation and no island fever here. We are ready to go back anytime.

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com GM HISTORY: HARLEY J EARL’S FINAL STYLING JOB Ed Clerkin In several prior newsletters, I introduced you to Harley J. Earl (GM Vice President of Styling) and all of the amazing talent he brought to the world of GM. As you may recall, he started his design aesthetic with GM in the Motor Car Division stylizing the new Cadillac LaSalle and then brought us 30 years of beautifully styled vehicles across all GM Divisions before he retired in 1958. Yet, Earl didn’t end his 3-decade career with just one more rendition of next year’s vehicle. Instead, he cooked up one final vehicle for Cadillac where he began that is just as stylish today as it was when introduced back in 1956 – the 1957/58 Cadillac Eldorado .

During the 1940’s and early 1950’s, Cadillac was the “Standard of the World” when it came to luxury. If you were all that and a bag of chips, you would have owned a new Cadillac to flaunt your affluence. Even owning a used Cadillac was considered a sign of success. Year after year, and the Cadillac design team cranked out ex- emplary models that were displayed at the famous GM Motorama shows. Earl had a style that gave Cadillac a sense of poised dignity that became the hallmark of every Cadillac. The 1957/58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was no exception and it would become the GM flagship vehicle in response to the 1956/57 Continental MK II. The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was the pinnacle of excess.

At the 1953 GM Motorama show, Cadillac presented the Orleans which was a pillar-less four-door with suicide doors and a

GM industry first panoramic windshield. Then in 1954, with the Park Avenue, El Camino and La Espada ( version of the El Camino) concept vehicles, Harley Earl introduced the

1953 GM Motorama: brushed stainless steel roof. The 1954 Cadillac Park Ave- nue four-door concept vehicle later became the baseline of the 1957/58 Eldorado Brougham that was officially unveiled at the 1956 GM Motorama. Earl gave the Park Avenue a

stainless steel window treatment that mocked a hardtop with a brushed stainless steel one-piece roof.

With the 1955 GM Motorama, Cadillac introduced the Eldorado Brougham concept vehicle. It was finished in a spe- cially formulated chameleon green paint, a brushed stainless

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com HARLEY J EARL’S FINAL STYLING JOB: CONTINUED Ed Clerkin panoramic windshield—a stunning concept vehicle for 1955. The Brougham was previewed by the press and the automotive industry on January 19, 1955 at the elegant Waldorf Astoria in New York. The car was being delivered in the early hours of the morning but fell off of its jacks and damaged the front fender and rear bump- er. By 4 pm that afternoon when a crowd of 5,000+ arrived to the show, the Brougham was

1955 GM Motorama: Cadillac Eldorado Brougham silently rotating on its turntable as if nothing had ever happened. A week later, the Eldorado Brougham made six GM Motorama shows and was the first concept vehicle in GM history slated for production due to the overwhelming interest by the public. The Brougham concept vehicle was nearly identical to the Park Avenue but was styled as a genuine pillar-less hardtop

that had taken the auto industry by storm (note the rear fender fin and taillight design compared to the production version). The 1956 GM Motorama brought us the pro- duction version of the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Minor changes from the 1955 con- cept vehicle included quad , full stainless steel rocker trim and re-styled rear fender fins. Eldorado Brougham styling fell under the direction of Ed Glowacke, Cadillac Chief Designer and it was hand built by the Fleetwood Division of GM under the close eye of Harley Earl. After all, this was Earl’s baby and all of the styling was personally orches- trated by him. Any visible seams were welded 1956 GM Motorama: Cadillac Eldorado Brougham with lead used to conceal the bond- Continued ing. Bumpers were sand-cast Page 10

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com HARLEY J EARL’S FINAL STYLING JOB: CONTINUED Ed Clerkin aluminum and triple chrome plated and the hood was forward hinged. The one-piece brushed stainless steel roof blended flawlessly with the rest of the seamless bodywork, stainless steel rocker panels, stainless side trim and chrome front/rear bumpers. [Ed. Note: The roof was actu- ally 4 sheets of stainless steel welded together, die-cut, sanded in the same direction with rough sandpaper and then formed to the roof contour.] The Brougham also used a panoramic windshield which wrapped around the corner into the front doors creating a “dog leg” that was a painful knee obstacle for any occupant over 6 feet tall. It shared no sheet metal panels with its Cadillac siblings.

The interior of the Eldorado Brougham was just as elegant as the exterior with forward opening rear coach doors. There were 44 choices of trim/color combinations in leather and a mostly understated broadcloth with two types of carpet available – Mouton and nylon Karakul. The seats were individu- ally contoured for comfort with front and rear fold- ing center armrests. The Brougham had a unique feature that moved the front seat forward when either rear coach door was opened to make entry/ exit easier. The glove box housed a set of magnet- ized tumblers and an Arpege by Lanvin perfume atomizer and powder puff for the ladies.

Other standard comfort and convenience features included:  Frameless four door hardtop with suicide rear doors and no center pillar  Brushed stainless steel roof  Compound curved windshield  Quad headlights  Alcoa forged 1-piece chromed aluminum wheels with stainless steel center cap  365 cubic inch V8 with either dual four barrel (1957) or three 2 barrel (1958) carburetors  4-speed automatic  Cruise Control

and self-leveling  Low profile US Royal tubeless tires with a 1” de- pressed white wall  Auto start/restart  Transistorized radio w/power antenna  Digital drum clock  Translucent polarized perspex sun visors  Mouton (sheepskin fur) or Karakul (wool loop pile) carpeting  Vanity items – Ladies Evans carryall, stainless steel drinking cups, cigarette case, tissue dispenser, bev- eled mirror, leather note pad with Cross sterling sil- ver pencil, 1 oz. Arpege Extrait de Lanvin  Power trunk lid (open and close)  Dual rear seat heaters (under seat) Trunk Switch  Autronic Eye (automatic high beam dimmer)  Power door locks with rear door interlock (prevents rear door from being opened while in gear)  Power windows  Power vent windows  w/Memory – six way power which moved back and down upon entering or exiting the vehicle and resetting itself to one of two owner predeter- mined positions [Ed. Note: Seem familiar with your current Corvette?]  Power brakes  Power  Automatic park brake release  Electric fuel pump (in tank) [Ed. Note: Seem familiar?]  Air conditioning  15 specific exterior color choices in addition to the 12 standard Cadillac colors plus the option for any color the customer wanted  More than 20 interior color and fabric combinations

The Eldorado Brougham was fully equipped with very few options available. Make no mistake, this was a class act and each Eldorado Brougham was hand built to the owner’s specifications.

The Eldorado Brougham’s air suspension was the first production air suspension system in automotive history and typically a sore spot with Brougham owners. The Eldorado Brougham used an electrically driven Delco rotary compressor and a long, thin reserve tank mounted behind the grille to compensate changes in the car’s loaded weight. The system used valves and solenoids to regulate itself with air bags at each wheel instead of coil springs and included a low-pressure warning light on the instrument panel. These systems were problematic and prone to failure at the most inconvenient times when leaky air bags would deflate rendering the car inoperable. Cadillac eventually offered a coil spring conversion kit as a factory replacement part because of the commonly failed sys- Continued tem but was extremely costly and required non-reversible modifications to the suspension system. Page 12

11

www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com HARLEY J EARL’S FINAL STYLING JOB: CONTINUED The Eldorado Brougham rode on a tubular X-frame that was adopted by Ed Clerkin the other Cadillac models in 1959. The Brougham’s front suspension was made with independent unequal length “A” arms, self-leveling air bags and tubular hydraulic shocks. The rear was fitted with lower trailing control links, upper single control yoke, self-leveling air bags and tubular hydraulic shocks. The Eldorado Brougham was the first GM car to use low profile tires. There was also a anti-dive feature that was used to keep the front-end level during hard braking.

The 1957-1958 Eldorado Brougham was powered by the 6.3 litre 365 CID 16-valve OHV . The engine block and heads were made of cast iron with five main bearings and hydraulic lifters. The car was fitted with a dual exhaust system and an electric fuel pump installed in the gas tank just as most cars are equipped today. Carburetion changed by year: 1957 was fitted with two Carter 4- bbl carburetors that developed 325 hp @ 4,800 rpm w/400 LB FT torque and the 1958 was fitted with 3 Rochester 2bbl carburetors that produced 335hp @ 4800 rpm. Both years used a GM 4-speed Hydra-Matic Jetaway automatic transmission that was one turd of a transmission. A friend of mine owned a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible that had the same 4-speed Hydra-Matic auto- matic transmission. The rpm drop from 3-4 was so significant that the engine was pretty much a sloth until it reached higher speeds—once in 4th gear. SPECS—Weight: 5490 lbs.; Gas Mileage: 9.7 MPG; Top speed: 121 MPH; 0-60: 11.3 seconds.

Now, for the juicy stuff. The 1957/58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham had a price tag of $13,074 and was the primary reason for the low production volume. In 1957, one could purchase 6 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air’s for that price or a new all electric home in the burbs. For the 1957 model year, only 400 units were built and in 1958 only 304 units were built. Cadillac lost money on every Eldorado Brough- am built as it cost nearly $25,000 to manufacture each one. The Brougham’s rival, Continental MK II, was in a similar non-profit situa- tion but only losing $1,000 on each MK II built and it sold for $10,400. Both the Eldorado Brougham and the Continental MK II were corporate “ego-cars” with the Continental MK II fizzling after a two-year production run and the Eldorado Brougham fizzling after a four-year run. About the only customers that could afford these luxurious wonders were well heeled Hollywood stars like Frank Sina- tra. Check out this website for a listing of known remaining Eldorado Broughams The Fabulous Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and this gorgeous 1958 Eldorado from Mecum Auctioneers that was previously owned by Dale Armstrong where a Cadillac Northstar motor was dropped in. Apparently, Dale had a collection of 1957/58 Eldorado’s that he restored or was restoring prior to his death in 2014.

The 1957-1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham remains a highly desirable vehicle that has appreciated to a six figure price tag today. The good news is that most of these vehicles remaining have been safely stored inside garages for over 60 years by their wealthy own- ers and only come up for auction during estate liquidations. They almost always have low mileage too. So, if you have $100,000 - $200,000 burning a hole in your pocket, now is the time to buy. Of course, there is always the Danbury Mint model for $125.00! Here is a up close and personal video of a 1957 in Lake Placid Blue w/45k miles that was up for auction back in 2011. The person record- ing the video walks around the vehicle demon- strating all of the features. Note that this partic- ular vehicle #351 has the understated broadcloth interior that is just plain ugly and worn out. Most of the Broughams I have seen with cloth interiors

look more like this one shown on the left

Medium Blue Bayou Cloth (Medium Blue Bayou cloth) - much more stately.

Here is another beautiful example from an owner in Santa Barbara advertising a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.
