We are looking forward to enjoying the Sports Awards Evening, Access Oscars and our end of year rewards trip, to name but a few. We have had an elongated exam period with students from Years 9 to 13 sitting a range of exams over a 6 week period. We are hugely proud of how our students have engaged with these exams and look forward to celebrating another successful set of results in August. As you are aware, I am moving on in the summer holidays to take on a new challenge at a secondary school in Derby. This is a decision that is based on what is best for my young family and I will miss both the staff and students of Bedford Academy immensely. It truly is a special place and it is the daily energy and enthusiasm that permeates all that we do that will be my abiding memory of the school. I have enjoyed working alongside our amazing students over the 14 years that I have been in the area and have also enjoyed getting to know you all as parents and carers, as we have worked together to ensure that education impacts positively on young lives. I wish you all the best for the future and hope to see many of you at different events prior to my departure in July. Mr McGregor, Head Teacher Introducing Chris Deller – Head of School Firstly I would like to say how proud I am to be appointed Head of School for Bedford Academy. I have been a part of the Academy’s development and improvement for the past 7 years and feel I am well placed to drive the school forward with the support of the students, parents and staff. My first term will have a simple focus; to improve the learning environment around the building and in classrooms. This will mean a consistently firm but fair approach to the basics – uniform, attendance, punctuality and positive behaviour. It is no secret that we have made significant changes to the structure of the school day and students and staff have responded well. These changes have been completely student-focussed and will have significant impact on the quality of teaching and the student’s engagement in their curriculum lessons. Our new Pastoral staff, including our Heads of Year team, have settled in well to their new roles and their main objective from now on is to know their Year group on an individual basis, forming strong relationships and supporting students through the daily challenges they face as young people. We have several exciting developments that will be launched in September, a new look student Voice team and student rewards system; I will also be looking for volunteers to help develop our Parent Voice. Finally, I hope you all have a fantastic summer whatever you have planned and look forward to welcoming our students back in September, refreshed and raring to go. The students have had another busy term taking part in a wide variety of events and activities which have enhanced their academic learning. September marked a major milestone in Bedford Academy’s history when we became a secondary school and welcomed Years 7 and 8 for the first time. As you will see from the numerous articles in this newsletter, they have settled in well and have enjoyed being involved in an array of diverse activities from zorbing and sailing, to researching the lives of local soldiers who served in WW1 and creating rainbows in test tubes during science! At the Academy we believe it is important that we offer students opportunities to widen their cultural experience and social skills. We also recognise the importance of ensuring our students are prepared for life after school and provide a high quality careers education and support service.     School structural consultation Bedford Borough School Structure Changes Public Consultation School Organisation Review Foreword On Friday 3 July 2015, we announced that we would work alongside schools in Bedford Borough to design and deliver a transition from a three-tier education system (with lower, middle and upper schools) to a two-tier system (with primary and secondary schools). We have been working alongside head teachers and governors to ensure that these changes to schools are as coordinated and coherent as possible and, at the same time, are able to ofer future certainty to parents, carers and guardians. Having spoken to many parents in the Borough, our priority is for every school in the Borough to be good or outstanding and to ensure that parents, carers and guardians are able to clearly understand the route their child, or children could take through the education system.     PRESS RELEASE Date: 19 March 2019 A helping hand to ease the cost of university Local charity, The Harpur Trust is reaching out to sixth formers across Bedford Borough to offer a helping hand with the ever increasing costs of a university education. The Harpur Trust University Bursary programme was introduced to help students from lower income families attend university, enabling them to make the most of their academic potential. The programme is open to students living in Bedford Borough, who attend one of the following: Bedford Academy, Bedford College, Biddenham Upper School, Kempston Challenger Academy, Mark Rutherford Upper School, Sharnbrook Upper School, St Thomas More RC Upper School, Wootton Upper School/Kimberley College. The fund, which amounts to £3600 per student is open to those aged 19 or under as of 31st August 2017, looking to study a full time undergraduate or foundation degree course starting this autumn. They must have been resident in Bedford Borough for at least 2 years. The deadline for applications is 2nd May 2017. Lucy Bardner, Community Programmes Director at The Harpur Trust says “We’re proud to have helped 145 Bedford students to attend university since 2007. The Bursaries have enabled them to concentrate on their studies and reduce anxiety & stress, leading to better degree results. The Spring edition of our Highlights magazine really emphasises the vast array of experiences that are open to the students at the school. We have coordinated a number of external visits including trips to Universities, apprenticeship links and our first ever Duke of Edinburgh camping experience. We are also delighted that we can provide a range of activities during the school day to inspire and stretch our students. During this term we have had a visit from the Mayor, Dave Hodgson, World Book Day and a fantastic school musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. We were also proud to host our annual careers fair which was branded this year as ‘Careers Quest’. This involved our students interacting with a wide range of exhibiitors from local and national businesses and further education. Our students continue to demonstrate a vast array of talents with our Sixth Form basketball team crowned local champions for the first time. We also have four keen musicians representing us in ‘The Battle of the Bands’! The next few weeks are a very busy time at Bedford Academy. Exam season is almost upon us and staff and students are working hard to ensure that we maximise every opportunity for success. We continue to promote various revision strategies and have a number of subject specific resources to support knowledge retention.

PRINCIPAL’S INTRODUCTION Once again it has been an incredible term, and this newsletter provides only the highlights! It gives me great pleasure to see how the young people of Goldington Academy embrace the opportunities that their teachers provide for them at school. As Christmas approaches, I have been particularly pleased to see us doing more work in the community. Last week, our choir sang at The Mallards and Kimbolton Lodge, and our community ambassadors led a Christmas craft activity with the residents, who loved the activity, as did our children who learned from Gwen (103 years old) what teaching was like ‘in the good old days’. Our community work is just one example of new initiatives here at school. We are constantly looking to provide a rich, exciting and stimulating extra-curricular provision that can bring out the individual talents of each child. Some examples of that curriculum include: Robotics and STEM; Parkour; Gardening Club and, of course, the myriad of sports clubs and competitions that take place. Our sporting success continues as the Year Five and Six girls’ football team became District Champions and both the girls’ and boys’ Year Seven and Eight teams were crowned District Sportshall Champions last week. In addition, our Arts Department have had a busy term. I particularly enjoyed our Act!17 performance of ‘Pandora’s Box’ at Bedford Modern School’s ‘Greek Myths’ collaboration. Call me biased, but I personally felt our performance was the best! Well done to Mr Stratton and all the young actors who were involved.
