Conservation Measures: Threats: Occurs in Azraq Wetland Reserve. Some research is going on. Water extraction for irrigation. The water level dropped to 12 m below ground from surface level and in 1992 the marshland dried up totally, because water pumping from the Azraq oasis in the last 30 years. According to Bianco pers observ in 2000 (Bianco joined the Amman IUCN Congress in 2000 and visited the Oasis and observed the species) the water area in the Oasis Reserve is very scarce, about less than one hectare, and maintained by artificially spilling of water. The species is nearly disappeared mainly as result of introduced tilapia, Sarotherodon galileus, which dominate in the Oasis. The species was maintained in the Reserve by captive breeding and tentatively reintroduced in the wild. It is now probably extinct in the wild, and for a success restocking, aliens species should be previously eradicated. NATURAL HISTORY AND CONSERVATION GENETICS OF THE FEDERALLY ENDANGERED MITCHELL’S SATYR BUTTERFLY, NEONYMPHA MITCHELLII MITCHELLII By Christopher Alan Hamm A DISSRETATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Entomology Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior – Dual Major 2012 ABSTRACT NATURAL HISTORY AND CONSERVATION GENETICS OF THE FEDERALLY ENDANGERED MITCHELL’S SATYR BUTTERFLY, NEONYMPHA MITCHELLII MITCHELLII By Christopher Alan Hamm The Mitchell’s satyr butterfly, Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii, is a federally endangered species with protected populations found in Michigan, Indiana, and wherever else populations may be discovered. The conservation status of the Mitchell’s satyr began to be called into question when populations of a phenotypically similar butterfly were discovered in the eastern United States. It is unclear if these recently discovered populations are N. m. mitchellii and thus warrant protection. In order to clarify the conservation status of the Mitchell’s satyr I first acquired sample sizes large enough for population genetic analysis I developed a method of non- lethal sampling that has no detectable effect on the survival of the butterfly. I then traveled to all regions in which N. mitchellii is known to be extant and collected genetic samples. Using a variety of population genetic techniques I demonstrated that the federally protected populations in Michigan and Indiana are genetically distinct from the recently discovered populations in the southern US. I also detected the presence of the reproductive endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia, and surveyed addition Lepidoptera of conservation concern. This survey revealed that Wolbachia is a real concern for conservation managers and should be addressed in management plans. -

Scrub Mint Dicerandra frutescens Shinners he scrub mint is a small, fragrant shrub that inhabits Federal Status: Endangered (Nov. 1, 1985) the scrub of central peninsular Florida. It bears a Critical Habitat: None Designated Tstrong resemblance to another Dicerandra species, Florida Status: Endangered Garretts mint, but can be differentiated by its scent, the Recovery Plan Status: Revision (May 18, 1999) color of its flowers, and the size of its leaves. Loss of habitat due to residential and agricultural development (particularly Geographic Coverage: Rangewide for citrus groves), as well as fire suppression in tracts of remaining habitat, are the principle threats to this plant. Description The scrub mint is a dense or straggly, low-growing shrub (Kral, 1983). It reaches 50 cm in height and grows from a deep, stout, spreading-branching taproot. Its branches are mostly spreading, and sometimes are prostrate. Its shoots have two forms, one which is strictly leafy and overwintering, and another which is flowering and dies back after fruiting. The leaves vary in shape. They can be narrowly oblong- elliptic, linear-elliptic, or linear-oblanceolate (Kral 1983). The upper surface of the leaves is dark green, with the midrib slightly impressed. The lower surface is slightly paler, with the midrib slightly raised. They are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, 2 to 3 mm wide, subsessile, flattish but somewhat fleshy, narrowly or broadly rounded at the apical end, have entire margins, and are not revolute. -

On 31 October, company Mennekes welcomed Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Kirchhundem. The chairman of the SPD's parliamentary group in the Bundestag had accepted Walter Mennekes’ invitation to visit them. The two have known each other for many years, having joined trips as delegates of the former black-red coalition government, together with representatives of the German industry. Following the welcome greeting and a detailed plant tour through the modern production facilities, Frank-Walter Steinmeier addressed the staff of Mennekes. He was impressed by the Sauerland company’s innovative strength in both its core business of industrial plugs and sockets and its charging solutions in the area of electric mobility. Steinmeier highlighted the importance of medium-sized enterprises as the driving force of Germany’s economy. He pointed out that family-owned businesses in particular define sustainably the German industry by thinking and acting in a long-term based fashion. He than met with Mennekes’ entire works council and management team to discuss the current challenges faced by family-owned businesses, including how to deal with the dwindling numbers of skilled workers. Walter Mennekes believes that the visit was worth it: “It is important that politicians know what kind of issues are affecting medium-sized, family-owned enterprises and what we expect from politics. -

Natural Heritage Persius Duskywing & Endangered Species Erynnis persius Program State Status: Endangered www.mass.gov/nhesp Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: The Persius Duskywing (Erynnis persius) is a skipper butterfly with a wingspan of 28 to 35 mm (Schweitzer et al. 2011). The forewing is dark brown, almost black, the hind wing also dark brown but not as dark as the forewing. There are small white apical spots on the forewing and pale submarginal spots on the hind wing. The male has raised, white, hair-like scales on the forewing that render a “soft” appearance. The common Wild Indigo Duskywing (Erynnis baptisiae) is so similar in appearance that the Persius Duskywing cannot be reliably identified in the field or from a photograph. However, comparing the males of each species, the Persius Duskywing typically has more raised, white, hair like scales on the forewing than the Wild Indigo Duskywing (but the latter also has a smaller number of Erynnis persius ▪ MA: Plymouth Co. ▪ 19 May 2004 ▪ Photo by M.W. similar scales); many (but not all) Wild Indigo Nelson Duskywings have a brown patch in the distal area of the forewing that is absent on the Persius Duskywing; and Adult Flight Period in Massachusetts many (but not all) Persius Duskywings have white Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec forewing apical spots that are aligned, not offset like the Wild Indigo Duskywing.
