“The Who Sings My Generation”—The Who (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label The Who Founded in England in 1964, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon are, collectively, better known as The Who. As a group on the pop-rock landscape, it’s been said that The Who occupy a rebel ground somewhere between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, while, at the same time, proving to be innovative, iconoclastic and progressive all on their own. We can thank them for various now- standard rock affectations: the heightened level of decadence in rock (smashed guitars and exploding drum kits, among other now almost clichéd antics); making greater use of synthesizers in popular music; taking American R&B into a decidedly punk direction; and even formulating the idea of the once oxymoronic sounding “rock opera.” Almost all these elements are evident on The Who’s debut album, 1966’s “The Who Sings My Generation.” Though the band—back when they were known as The High Numbers—had a minor English hit in 1964 with the singles “I’m the Face”/”Zoot Suit,” it wouldn’t be until ’66 and the release of “My Generation” that the world got a true what’s what from The Who. “Generation,” steam- powered by its title tune and timeless lyric of “I hope I die before I get old,” “Generation” is a song cycle worthy of its inclusive name. ASTRAL WEEKS? – IT’S NOT JUST ME, … THE RECORDING Van: “The entire LP was recorded in two eight-hour sessions, plus two overdub sessions. That was the whole album.” (Yorke p.51). Astral Weeks was recorded in just two sessions (48 hours) at Century Sound Studios, on West 52nd Street in New York (25 September & 15 October 1968), using NY session (jazz) musicians: Richard Davis (bass), Connie Kay (drums) from the Modern Jazz Quartet, Warren Smith Jr. (percussionist/vibraphone), John Payne (flute/soprano saxophone), and Jay Berliner (guitar), chosen by Lew Merenstein (Producer) in consultation with Richard Davis (bassist). “Merenstein received a call from Warner Bros: ‘We’ve signed Van Morrison, go up to Boston, see what he’s got’. … Morrison played Merenstein his song Astral Weeks: ‘Thirty seconds into it my whole being was vibrating … I had to be the producer to do it. Not that producer, not that producer, regardless of their accomplishments. It had to be Richard (Davis), not that bass player, I don’t want to sound existential, but there was Van, and that was it; there was no band, there were no arrangements, the direction was him singing and playing – that was where I followed. That’s why it came out like it did. To this day, it gives me pain to hear it; pain is the wrong word – I’m so moved by it.” (Marcus p.52-8). Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Leader’s Guide, Fact Sheet & Quiz Item Number: 3316 © AP Safety Training This easy-to-use Leader’s Guide is provided to assist in conducting a successful presentation. PREPARING FOR THE MEETING Here are a few suggestions for using this program: a) Review the contents of the Fact Sheet that immediately follows this page to familiarize yourself with the program topic and the training points discussed in the program. The Fact Sheet also includes a list of Program Objectives that details the information that participants should learn from watching the program. b) If required by your organization, make an attendance record to be signed by each participant to document the training to be conducted. c) Prepare the area and equipment to be used for the training. Make sure the watching environment is comfortable and free from outside distractions. Also, ensure that participants can see and hear the TV screen or computer monitor without obstructions. d) Make copies of the Review Quiz included at the end of this Leader’s Guide to be completed by participants at the conclusion of the presentation. Be aware that the page containing the answers to the quiz comes before the quiz itself, which is on the final page. CONDUCTING THE PRESENTATION a) Begin the meeting by welcoming the participants. Introduce yourself and give each person an opportunity to become acquainted if there are new people joining the training session. b) Introduce the program by its title and explain to participants what they are expected to learn as stated in the Program Objectives of the Fact Sheet.
