Pinewood Derby Returns to Homer Elementary School with Enthusiastic Support

Homer Pack 85 Cub Scouts held their Pinewood Derby race at the Homer Elementary School cafeteria on Saturday. Cheered on by family and friends, the boys raced their cars down the 4 lane track set up on a line of tables in the cafeteria. The cars were grouped by scout dens; Tigers, Wolves, and Bears: and rank Webelos 1 and 2. A category for “Family” allowed family members to race a car also. To The Editor:

Congratulations to all who had a part in the no fracking decision in NYS. I would like to thank everyone who stood up against fracking by: attending rallies, writing letters, putting up NO FRACK signs, presenting information to town boards, writ- ing positions papers, visiting frack sites in PA, showing up at gatherings at State Fair on Governor’s day, manning health fair booths and field day displays with handouts, running for office at local and state level with no fracking as part of their platform, holding open presentations, environmental organizations, pro-bono attorneys, scientists and health professionals, over 200 bans and moratoriums that came from towns in NYS and by the public sending in over 200,000 com- ments to our state DEC giving the documented negative effects of fracking.

Last but not least thanks to our governor, the DEC and the acting Commissioner of Health for assessing the multitude of facts and to arrive at the decision to ban hydrofracking in NYS because it’s just not safe. If I forgot to mention anyone or a group that brought facts of the heavy industry to be known to others, I apologize. Hopefully, I left no one out.

The excuse that some towns gave in the past was that they can’t afford to write up a moratorium. It is no longer valid. The towns now need to put in strict road use that prevents heavy industry, write strong zoning laws and put a compre- hensive plan together. If government officials don’t represent the wishes of the majority – why are they even there? Who’s pressuring them not to represent the majority? Some county legislators signed on to the Indian Land deal because they were threatened in some form from Albany. Many said it wasn’t good but voted for it anyway. Who is intimidating the government in these small towns now and in which way?

We can take a breather and enjoy the moment but we can’t go on vacation because the gas lobbyists are already pushing to do away with the decision to ban the heavy industry of hydrofracking in New York State of which the taxpayers will be paying millions of dollars to fight big gas and oil. Our town board recently made a comment to the effect “maybe now we can end hearing about hydrofrack- ing.” They should tell that to the gas industry.
