Combined with the gap of values that are between the local people and the tourists coming from very different so- cial backgrounds, the contact between hosts and guests is sometimes conflictive, and in many cases not even existing. Within the scope of host-guest relations, this study zooms in the sexual and romantic encounters that take place between locals and tourists and sheds light on the impacts of these encounters on the Tunisian tourism industry at large. Findings have shown different impacts of sex and romance tourism on Tunisia's reputation and the tourist experience. However, looking further than sex and romance tourism, there are other impacts on the general tourism industry that cannot be ignored. This study has found the connections between different kind of impacts, whereas conflictive host-guest relations are taking a large space. At the same time, sex and romance tourism has been argued by tour- ism stakeholders to take a place within the bigger scope of host-guest relations as these stakeholders do not perceive sex and romance tourism as an isolated field of practices but rather as part of a range of host-guest tensions and relations that are not desired to be pre- sent and provide alternatives. INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT Tunisia is a country where African, Arabic and European culture meet. This has been found in its history where the original tribes of North-Africa have made space for Roman culture and then Arab colonisation. Later cultural influences were from Turkey and the impact of the colonization of Tunisia by France led to a lot of changes in for example administration, education, language, clothing and architecture. Tunisia therefore can be seen as a mix of several cultures, that each

It is the northernmost country in Africa and at almost 165,000 square kilometres in area, the smallest country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. As of 2019, its population is estimated just under 11.7 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, located on the country’s northeast coast. Northern Tunisia has a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winter. The mountains of the north-west occasionally get snow. Annual rainfall ranges from 1,000 mm in the north down to 150 mm in the south, although some Saharan area go for years without rain. From October to beginning of December is ideal for touring. At the beginning of recorded history, Tunisia was inhabited by Berber tribes. Its coast was settled by Phoenicians starting as early as the 10th century BC. The city of Carthage was founded in the 9th century BC by Phoenician and Cypriot settlers. After the series of wars with Greek city-states of Sicily in the 5th century BC, Carthage rose to power and eventually became the dominant civilisation in the Western Mediterranean. A Carthaginian invasion of Italy led by Hannibal during the Second Punic War, one of a series of wars with Rome, nearly crippled the rise of Roman power. After the Battle in 149 BC, Carthage was conquered by Rome, the region became one of the main granaries of Rome and was fully Latinised.

    Athens Journal of Tourism - Volume 5, Issue 1 – Pages 21-35 The Goletta: A Cosmopolitan Seaside Resort By Adel Manai Though the history of seaside resorts has been on the agenda of socio-cultural historians for some time now, Tunisia has not had afair share of this history, despite its incorporation in French colonial tourist circles and later into the European and international tourist networks in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as its development into a popular tourist destination and a holiday market after its independence in the late 1950s. This paper is an attempt to unearth part of this history by focusing on one of the pioneering seaside resorts of Tunisia, the port town of the Goletta, more popularly known as “La Goulette” as the French put it in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It traces the early development of this watering place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and analyses the factors thatcontributed to its growth into a popular seaside resort. Kenzer, Thesis Director This thesis descnbes the first fifty years of the creation of Virginia Beach as a seaside resort. It demonstrates the importance of railroads in promoting the resort and suggests that Virginia Beach followed a similar developmental pattern to that of other ocean resorts, particularly those ofthe famous New Jersey shore. Virginia Beach, plagued by infrastructure deficiencies and overshadowed by nearby Ocean View, did not stabilize until its promoters shifted their attention from wealthy northerners to Tidewater area residents. After experiencing difficulties exacerbated by the Panic of 1893, the burning of its premier hotel in 1907, and the hesitation bred by the Spanish American War and World War I, Virginia Beach enjoyed robust growth during the 1920s. While Virginia Beach is often perceived as a post- World War II community, this thesis argues that its prewar foundation was critical to its subsequent rise to become the largest city in Virginia.

    Responsibly Engaged: Ideology and Utopia along the Backpacker Trail By Sonja Bohn Submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Sociology (2012) Abstract By following the backpacker trail beyond the „tourist bubble,‟ travellers invest in the ideals of freedom, engagement, and responsibility. Backpacker discourse foregrounds travellers‟ freedom to mobility as it constructs the world as „tourable‟; engagement is demonstrated in the search for „authentic‟ connections with cultural Others, beyond the reach of globalised capitalism; responsibility is shouldered by yearning to improve the lives of these Others, through capitalist development. While backpackers frequently question the attainability of these ideals, aspiring to them reveals a desire for a world that is open, diverse, and egalitarian. My perspective is framed by Fredric Jameson‟s reading of the interrelated concepts of ideology and utopia. While backpacker discourse functions ideologically to reify and obscure global inequalities, to entrench free market capitalism, and to limit the imagining of alternatives, it also figures for a utopian world in which such ideology is not necessary. Using this approach, I attempt to undertake critique of backpacker ideology without invalidating its utopian content, while seeking to reveal its limits. Overall, I suggest that late- capitalism subsumes utopian desires for a better way of living by presenting itself as the solution.
