Työ on tekstitutkimus ja se keskittyy ennesarjan hermeneuttisiin pääpiirteisiin. Ennesarja on kirjoitettu akkadin kielellä ja se on koottu kuningas Assurbanipalin hallintoaikana (669–627 eaa.), mutta sen vanhimmat osat ajoittuvat jo toiselle vuosituhannelle ennen ajan laskun alkua. Tutkielma sisältää analyysin taulujen 1-40 eläin-, kasvi, ja vesienteistä ja työ pohjautuu Sally Freedmanin vuosina 1998 ja 2006 julkaisemiin käännöksiin ja translitteraatioihin. Tutkimukseni osoittaa, että Mesopotamian oppineilla oli systemaattinen tapa yhdistää tietty väritermi joko negatiiviseen tai positiiviseen enteeseen. Abstract The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary. -

This is a result of the simple fact that our knowledge of the practice of Mesopotamian magic is channeled mainly through the medium of text. 2 Assuming a written representation serves as a record of an existing ritual practice, it must be approached as a selective account of specific aspects of a ritual, which were deemed necessary to be written down, in a specific time, place and context.3 In addition, we cannot assume that a ritual text4 or written recitation merely records a practice which existed before it was written down; the action or recitation may have been composed initially in writing, by means of a combination of observation and writing, or with reference to an oral tradition. Following the initial writing of an incantation or ritual text, the composition represented by the text may have been transmitted in writing and/or orally. Similarly, the composition may have been performed with a full or partial reference to a text, a version of it, or as a purely or partially oral tradition. -

Geller Abstttracttt The Babylonian Talmud preserves some of the very latest traditions from Babylonia from the period when cuneiform script was still legible, and one of the last uses of cuneiform tablets was to consult the ancient 'sciences' of astronomy (including astrology), mathematics, omens, and healing (medicine including magic). The present study will argue that throughout the third century CE rabbis in Babylonia continued to acquire technical information from Babylonian scholars who could read cuneiform, and some of this information was translated into Aramaic and was recorded haphazardly in the academic discussions of the Talmud. The nature of the Talmudic sources and the final redaction of the complex work meant that traditions from Graeco-Roman Palestine were mixed in with local traditions from Babylonia, and the dichotomy is particularly evident in fields of medicine and magic, in which clear distinctions can be made between Greek and Akkadian approaches to healing. The present work, in two parts, is an attempt to sort out the source material according to whether it originates from Babylonia or not, and to focus on Akkadian parallels -

The present study is an interpretation of the two myths copied in the Old Babylonian period in which the Sumerian mother goddess is one of the main actors. The first myth is commonly called “Enki and NinপXUVDƣa”, and the second “Enki and Ninmaপ”. The theoretical point of departure is that myths have society as their referents, i.e. they are “talking about” society, and that this is done in an ideological way. This study aims at investigating on the one hand which contexts in the Mesopotamian society each section of the myths refers to, and on the other hand which ideological aspects that the myths express in terms of power relations. The myths are contextualized in relation to their historical and social setting. If the myth for example deals with working men, male work in the area during the relevant period is dis- cussed. The same method of contextualization is used regarding marriage, geographical points of reference and so on. -

JIMÉNEZ The public availability of photographs of the entire British Museum Kuyunjik collection has allowed the identification of many hitherto unplaced fragments. Some of them are particularly relevant for the reconstruction of passages in a number of ancient Mesopotamian literary texts. These are published here for the first time. They include three new fragments of the Gilgameš epic, one or two of the Theodicy, several of the Diviner’s Manual and of the Rituals of the Diviner, several prayers previously only poorly known, and fragments from the seventh tablet of the exorcistic series Muššuʾu. Ashurbanipal’s libraries represent the single most important collection of literary tablets from first millennium Mesopotamia, and they will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Almost all genres are represented within them, and the reliability and legibility of their manuscripts have proven an invaluable touchstone when confronted with duplicates from different cities and periods. Despite the intensive work of several generations of scholars, their wealth is far from exhausted, and many of their texts still remain unpublished and many of the fragments unidentified. This makes the possibility of accessing the entirety of their contents at the click of a button, via the British Museum’s online database of photographs,1 particularly welcome news for the student of Babylonian literature. -
