Fidelia Bridges (1834‒1924)
FIDELIA BRIDGES (1834‒1924) Fidelia Bridges is known for her exquisitely detailed renderings of flora and fauna seen at close range, particularly in watercolor. Indeed, she is notable as the first and only female member of the American Watercolor Society, a group that was founded in 1866 to promote the art of watercolor painting, and which included such illustrious painters as Samuel Colman (1832‒1920) and William Hart (1823‒1894). Bridges was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1834 to a sea captain and his wife, but was left orphaned by the age of fifteen. She found work as a nanny in the household of a Salem ship-holder, William Augustus Brown, moving with them to Brooklyn in 1854. It was in Brooklyn that she befriended the sculptor, Anne Whitney, who encouraged her to enroll at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, which she did in 1860. There, she studied with William Trost Richards, an advocate of the hyper-detailed Pre-Raphaelite approach, which would prove a lasting influence on her style. Following the Civil War, Bridges furthered her study of painting in Italy. Upon her return from Europe, Bridges established a studio in New York City, but continued to reside in Philadelphia. She was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1874, and a full member of the American Watercolor Society the following year. Beginning in 1876, her watercolors were reproduced and sold by lithographer Louis Prang, a testament to her success. She continued to work with Prang until 1899, primarily designing greeting cards. -

It offers a vision of the poet’s life in relation to her avo- cation—in truth, a second vocation—as a gardener. Through close readings of her poems and letters, I explore how often and how frankly, specifically, and variously she expressed her love for plants and flowers and her conviction that their “world” and her own were one. Although Dickinson’s fascination with botany has long been ac- knowledged, the extensive role played by flowers in her art as in her life has not been deeply considered. Whether she wrote about love or war, ugliness or beauty, vanity or virtue, heaven or hell, her flower garden often provided her with the narratives, tropes, and imagery she required. -

Lambert Article
The Lambert House and Fountain West Newton Hill, Massachusetts This house at 128 Chestnut Street in West Newton was the home of the Lambert family from 1854 to 1900. The sculpture below by Anne Whitney was given to the City of Newton in 1903 in memory of Catherine Porter Lambert. It is part of a fountain located one block south from the Lambert House. The purpose of this article is to document the history of both the house and the fountain and share the stories of the people who were connected with these two historic resources. The Lambert House is at the top right (SE) corner. The railway tracks run through the center of this map. Between the tracks and Washington Street are the Unitarian Church and the Allen School. The other shaded buildings north of Washington Street are City Hall, the Congregational Church and the Public School. 1 The History of the House When the Boston to Worcester railway line was opened in West Newton in 1834, the land uphill from the depot was largely undeveloped. Chestnut Street served travel between West Newton and Upper Falls. Highland (then called Orange and Linden) and Otis Streets were laid out but had minimal development. Bullough’s Farm encompassed much of the land between the railway and Fuller Street to the south. -

Anne Whitney 1821-1915 Born in Watertown on Galen St. (in the Hunt house of Revolutionary fame) in a family active in abolition, education and women’s rights (Lucy Stone was a cousin), Anne Whitney received an excellent education –especially for a woman of her time. Her poetry appeared in Harper’s and Atlantic Monthly and in a book Poems published in 1859 with no fanfare and only tepid reviews until noticed by the influential North American Review. That journal praised Whitney’s rapport with nature, compared her verse to England’s Pre-Raphaelites, and admired its “lyrical and dramatic power.” “Every word strikes home;” the reviewer wrote, “every line is clean, distinct as if cut in stone; the pen in her hands becomes so like the sculptor’s chisel that one questions if poetry be the fittest exponent of her genius.” The story is that when the family had moved to a part of Watertown now Belmont, the farmer next door observed her model a face in the wet sand he was using to root cuttings and encouraged her to study art. In fact she studied art in Philadelphia and New York, and anatomy in a Brooklyn hospital. She rented a Boston studio near her teacher William Rimmer and worked at home in a backyard studio called “the shanty” built by her brother. She also studied in Rome –the center of western sculpture at the time, and a place where a respectable woman artist could work from male models. She knew fellow sculptor and Watertownian the more boisterous Harriet Hosmer but avoided her due to incompatible personalities.
