Nowadays, we show the first global analysis with mitogenomics for the entire geographical range of this species. For this, we analyzed mitochondrial sequences of 352 Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) individuals from all the important geographic areas in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, where this species inhabits. A large fraction of these animals was sequenced for their complete mitogenomes and those animals, where this was not possible by degraded DNA, were, at least, sequenced for three mitochondrial genes (mt COI, ND5, and 12S rRNA). The results showed that the mitochondrial diversification of the Andean bear was during the last phase of the Pleistocene with similar haplotypes in a large distribution area. However, two large different macro-populations seem to be present, one of them in the Northern Andes (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru) and other in the Southern Andes (southern Peru and Bolivia). Furthermore, we analyzed, with extreme detail, the spatial genetic structure of the Andean bear within each one of the countries for conservation purposes. Additionally, we compared the sequences of these animals from wild with the mitochondrial sequences obtained from remains of some European zoo founding Andean bear specimens (Switzerland and France). Mitochondrial results could identify the geographical origins of the European zoo founding individuals. ABSTRACTS BOOK 6 MONITOREO DEL OSO ANDINO COMO HERRAMIENTA DE GESTIÓN DE ÁREAS PROTEGIDAS Troncoso Juan1, Giraldo María1, Guzmán Carolina1, Gallego Luis-Enrique1, Hernández Javier1, Osorio Libaniel1, Velásquez Aldemar1, Rojas Jhon1, Gómez José1, Gallego Luis- Guillermo1, Sánchez Leomede1, Giraldo Paula, Castrillón Laura2, Bustamante Luisa2, Bianchi Guillermo3, Goldstein Isaac2, Márquez Robert2 1Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia 2Wildlife Conservation Society 3Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela RESUMEN El oso andino es un Valor Objeto de Conservación y de Sistema para Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia, dado que el estado del oso andino y sus amenazas sirven como indicadores del éxito de la gestión de las Áreas Protegidas (AP) y del Sistema de APs al cual pertenecen. En el año 2015, en el PNN Tamamá y su zona amortiguadora se modelaron la ocupación del oso andino y sus amenazas. La información se colectó en el 50 % del área, incluyendo zonas de alta y baja accesibilidad humana. El modelo a escala de área de acción mostró una alta ocupación (Ψ=0.85) y detectabilidad (p=0.64) para la especie. Los modelos de ocupación a escala de sitio señalaron a la presencia de presiones (ganadería extensiva, pequeños cultivos, tala selectiva, caza, quemas y minería) y la cantidad de hábitat remanente, como las variables que más afectaron la presencia del oso andino. La información proporcionada por el monitoreo de oso andino y sus amenazas fue usada como información de respaldo dentro de los ejercicios de prevención, vigilancia y control, e incluida en SicoSMART. La información permitió realizar ajustes en el Plan de Prevención, Vigilancia y Control (PVC), con el aumento o disminución de rutas de patrullaje en los sectores con base en la intensidad de las presiones, el aumento de personal fijo y de apoyo en los sectores con mayor presencia de presiones, y el incremento de los recursos para realizar patrullajes. En las áreas priorizadas, se reforzó la educación ambiental enfocada a niños escolares y adultos, en temas asociados a la utilización de buenas prácticas agropecuarias para disminuir las amenazas. La información se ha socializado con autoridades ambientales, gubernamentales y comunitarias presentes en el área de amortiguación para realizar intervenciones conjuntas, optimizar los recursos financieros y físicos dentro y fuera del área protegida, y disminuir las amenazas que afectan al oso andino y su hábitat. Estos resultados muestran la importancia de vincular la información de monitoreo y PVC en la gestión y manejo del área asegurando el éxito de las intervenciones. ABSTRACTS BOOK 7 CARACTERIZACIÓN Y ANÁLISIS DE CALIDAD DE HÁBITAT DE OSO ANDINO (TREMARCTOS ORNATUS) EN LA ZONA DE AMORTIGUAMIENTO DE UN ÁREA PROTEGIDA EN LA CORDILLERA ORIENTAL COLOMBIANA González Andrea, Rodríguez Samuel, Rodríguez Daniel, Jaramillo Juan, Reyes Adriana Fundación Wii, Colombia RESUMEN El estudio se desarrolló en la cordillera oriental colombiana dentro del área de amortiguamiento del Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza, macizo estratégico por su potencial hídrico para la sabana de Bogotá y otros municipios. El objetivo fue evaluar la calidad de hábitat utilizado por Tremarctos ornatus y aportar a su conocimiento y conservación a partir del análisis de composición florística, estructurales y de diversidad en bosques andinos y páramos de la región, mediante el montaje de nueve parcelas por ecosistema, ubicadas en zonas con y sin presencia de oso. En segundo lugar, con base en información obtenida del análisis anterior, se midieron las variables necesarias para obtener un índice de calidad de hábitat para la especie en la región. La composición florística y estructura encontradas son típicas de bosques jóvenes bajo procesos de intervención antrópica, lo que se evidencia por la ausencia o presencia restringida de especies propias de los bosques andinos, con pocos representantes de tallas juveniles y adultas, y con clases diamétricas tipo “J” invertida. La composición florística de los páramos de la región señala que estos en su mayoría se encuentran bajo estados de conservación más avanzados. Hubo bajos valores de riqueza para el municipio de Ubaque, donde no hay presencia de oso. El índice de calidad de hábitat señala bajos valores en áreas sin presencia de oso o con presencia reducida como el caso de Ubaque (Bosque andino 0,4/1) y Sesquilé (páramo 0,5/1) con respecto a los que presentaron los mayores valores, Choachí y San Juanito (Bosque andino 0,7/1) y Fómeque (páramo 0,83/1); mientras tanto, con respecto al bosque alto-andino, Junín, municipio con importantes procesos de paramización, presenta el valor más alto (0,77/1) con respecto a Guasca (0,46/1). Se observa que los individuos de la especie están aprovechando los recursos que brindan las áreas intervenidas. Understanding, documentation and appropriate use of new records are essential, especially when managing threatened species. Here we present novel data regarding new distributional records for 17 bird species along the Amazonian slopes of the eastern Ecuadorian Andes. The new records fill gaps on our knowledge in the distribution, both in latitude and altitude.     The World Heritage Convention and the National Park Service: The First Two Decades, 1972–1992 Peter H. Stott Introduction As recounted in the first essay of this three-part series,1 the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (the “World Heritage Conven - tion”), was adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organiza - tion (UNESCO) in 1972. The United States, and the National Park Service (NPS) in partic- ular, had important roles in its development and in negotiations leading to its adoption. The NPS Office of International Affairs (OIA), which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, participated in all phases of that development. This essay, published in the 40th anniversary year of the convention, recounts the US role in the first two decades of the convention’s exis- tence, culminating in its 20th anniversary session in 1992 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The United States was the first nation to ratify the new convention, and when it came into force in 1975, the US was on its governing body, the World Heritage Committee, for all but four of the sixteen committee sessions in the period through 1992. The US played a key role in the convention’s development: in addition to hosting the session of the committee at which the first sites were inscribed on the World Heritage List, at subsequent sessions it was a vocal advocate for the more problematic issues that began to appear almost immediately: the integrity of the list and the conservation of sites already inscribed. David Hales, the US Committee chair at that 1978 session in Washington, voiced the dominant sentiment of the period: We viewed the Convention as—in many ways—a US initiative and an initiative that we want- ed to help parent early on and bring it up the right way; that we felt it should be incredibly objective and unimpeachable in its judgements; that it needed to rely on professional expert- ise, not consensual votes as often dominated in some other international institutions...

Brandstaetter, F. — The Andean bear’s taxonomy is discussed with some nomenclatorial corrections and discussions of some common names for the species. The most widely used common name has been changed from spectacled bear to Andean bear in favour of the animal’s importance in conservation issues for the Andean region. Key words: Andean bear, taxonomy, nomenclature, Tremarctos ornatus, conservation. The Andean bear, Tremarctos ornatus (Cuvier, 1825), is an enigmatic species of the Andes. It has even been declared an umbrella species for the conservation of the whole Andean ecosystem (Troya et al., 2004; Ruiz-Garcia et al., 2005). Being the only true bear species in South America the Andean bear is unique in its perception and as a representative of the South American fauna. As Morrison III et al. (2009) and Kitchener (2010) have pointed out, taxonomy is fundamental to conservation. Scientific names are the device to clearly determine a species (Ng, 1994). All communication about animals, biodiversity and conservation is based on the stability and exactness of scientific names and the whole community is responsible for a proper use (Welter-Schultes, 2013). SEDPGYM, Quito, Ecuador Baños, located in the province of Tungurahua, in the center of Ecuador, between the Andes and the Ecuadorian Amazon, has tourism as an economic base. It is one of the entrance gates to the Sangay National Park, a world heritage site, which is home to the volcano Tungurahua (Throat of Fire in Quichua, the indigenous language). The volcano has been active since 1999 and frequently spits smoke and fire. Due to its topography and natural attractions, it is a premier destination for hiking, biking, rappel, canyoning, climbing, rafting, horseback riding, bridge jumping, kayaking, among others. There are many waterfalls and deep river gorges that can be crossed with “tarabitas”. Beyond ecotourism, the area receives visitors interested in health, religious, adventure and geological tourism. With a population of 20,000 inhabitants, it has several lodging options, restaurants, 49 local tour operators, and many spa’s and public pools with the hot water from the depths of Tungurahua volcano. Many of the tour operators offer tours that are conducted on vehicles called “chiva”, a kind of truck adapted to carry passengers. The city has great accessibility and culture connected with volcanism. The Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Water was built with volcanic rock. The Geopark Project is already being promoted in the city on the map distributed to visitors and in a specific folder about the Project, which explains what a Geopark is, and its benefits to the community.

    EAZA Position Statement on Bears in Commercial Entertainment • The EAZA Bear Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) members are recognised experts on the husbandry and welfare of bears that are held under human care. • EAZA members abide by codes and standards, most notably the ‘EAZA Code of Ethics’ and the ‘EAZA Minimum Standards for the Accommodation and Care of Animals in Zoos and Aquaria’. Additionally, for the housing and care of bear species EAZA members follow the EAZA Husbandry Guidelines for bears. • EAZA and its Bear TAG do not support any use of bears for reasons of purely commercial entertainment, especially when such use involves the manipulation or removal of the bear from its normal social group or enclosure. The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) represents 340 members from 41 countries, of which more than 280 are located in the European Union. EAZA collections house more than 250,000 animals, excluding fish and invertebrates. Under the umbrella of the EAZA Bear TAG, EAZA runs conservation breeding programmes for six bear species, namely: European brown bear, polar bear, Asiatic black bear, sloth bear, Malayan sun bear and spectacled bear. In this context we wish to present our position on the use of bears purely for commercial entertainment. Bears held under human care in zoological gardens fulfil an ambassadorial role for their wild living conspecifics as well as highlighting the plight of bears that are illegally traded and used, and often misused, for purely commercial entertainment purposes. Bears held in EAZA zoos are of importance for getting a (bear) conservation education message across to the general public.

The high Andean forests are especially vulnerable to this type of soil erosion. The corporate purpose of ‘Reforestadora El Guásimo S.A.S.’ is to use wood from its plantations, but it also follows the parameters of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). For this reason, it carries out reforestation activities and programs and, very particularly, it is interested in carrying out ecological restoration processes in some critical sites. The study area is located between 2000 and 2750 masl and is considered a low Andean humid forest (bmh-MB). The average annual precipitation rate is 2057 mm and the average temperature is around 11 ºC. The soil has a sandy loam texture with low pH, which limits the amount of nutrients it can absorb. FAO (2014) suggests that around 10 genera are enough for a proper restoration. After a bibliographic revision, the genera chosen were Alchornea, Billia, Ficus, Inga, Meriania, Miconia, Ocotea, Protium, Prunus, Psidium, Symplocos, Tibouchina, and Weinmannia. Two inventories from 2013 and 2019, helped to determine different biodiversity indexes to check the survival of different species and to suggest the adequate characteristics of the individuals for a successful vegetative stakes reforestation.

Over 100 conservation professionals from 29 countries gathered to discuss how to scale up species conservation planning within the IUCN SSC and beyond. We were delighted to have IUCN SSC Chair Jon Paul Rodríguez as our keynote speaker. Jon Paul is committed to increasing planning within the SSC to catalyze more conservation action. He spoke passionately about the SSC’s Assess-Plan-Act framework and the essential role of CPSG as the species planning lead for the Commission. The anthropogenii nature of Andean ecosystems is discussed in the framework of tree-line dynamics in selected sites in Ecuador. Indicators of human impact are evidence of the need for a scientific understanding of neotropical mountains that is better in tune with the special conditions of tropical Andean environments. Tropandean systems are neither tropical ecosystems nor midlatitude regions, and lessons from ecologically damaging activi- ties in those ecosystems cannot be transferred readily to Tropandean systems. Better research from the ethnobiological and ecological fronts is needed if we are to comprehend the intri- cate functions of neotropical mountains, particularly the cloud-forest belt, which is regarded as the most threatened ecosystem when considering sustainability scenarios.
