Newberg Thomas Jefferson University Various forms of self-loss have been described as aspects of mental illness (e.g., depersonalization disorder), but might self-loss also be related to mental health? In this integrative review and proposed organizational framework, we focus on self-transcendent experiences (STEs)—transient mental states marked by decreased self-salience and increased feelings of connectedness. We first identify common psychological constructs that contain a self-transcendent aspect, including mindfulness, flow, peak experiences, mystical-type experiences, and certain positive emotions (e.g., love, awe). We then propose psychological and neurobiological mechanisms that may mediate the effects of STEs based on a review of the extant literature from social psychology, clinical psychology, and affective neuroscience. We conclude with future directions for further empirical research on these experiences. -

Many concrete elements from the study of speech science have the potential to be applied to the interpretation of EVP content. In two studies, the research examined the effects of exposing consumers to print ads containing faces or pareidolian images for short time lapses (0.5, 1, and 3 seconds). The results show that both ad types capture viewers’ attention and are more frequently recognized than advertisements that do not feature faces or face-like objects. Moreover, both face ads and pareidolian ads increase brand recognition and ad preference. The theoretical and operational implications are discussed. Alexander De Foe Monash University Melbourne, Australia During an out-of-body experience (OBE) a person experiences their center of consciousness from a spatial location that is distinctly different to their physical body. Prior research has suggested that psychologists and psychotherapists may be reluctant to discuss the content of their clients OBE accounts due to a lack of understanding about the nature of these experiences. Yet, other research has highlighted the substantial value of discussing OBEs in the therapeutic process. -

Carlson David Spiegel National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Menlo Park, Stanford University School of Medicine and Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, California The relationship between a reported history of trauma and dissociative symptoms has been explained in 2 conflicting ways. Pathological dissociation has been conceptualized as a response to antecedent traumatic stress and/or severe psychological adversity. Others have proposed that dissociation makes individuals prone to fantasy, thereby engendering confabulated memories of trauma. We examine data related to a series of 8 contrasting predictions based on the trauma model and the fantasy model of dissociation. In keeping with the trauma model, the relationship between trauma and dissociation was consistent and moderate in strength, and remained significant when objective measures of trauma were used. Dissociation was temporally related to trauma and trauma treatment, and was predictive of trauma history when fantasy proneness was controlled. Dissociation was not reliably associated with suggestibility, nor was there evidence for the fantasy model prediction of greater inaccuracy of recovered memory. -

Imagination: A Critical Skill for Learning Scott Barry Kaufman In recent years, schools have become increasingly focused on developing “executive functions” in students. These functions—which include the ability to concentrate, ignore distractions, regulate emotions, and integrate complex information in working memory—are certainly important contributors to learning. However, I believe that in our school’s excitement over executive functions, we’ve missed out on the why of education. Another class of functions have been recently discovered by cognitive neuroscientists that-- when combined with executive functioning—contribute to deep, personally meaningful learning, long-term retention, compassion, and creativity. Dubbed the “default mode network” by cognitive scientists, the following imagination-related functions have been associated with this network: daydreaming, imagining and planning the future, retrieving deeply personal memories, making meaning out of experiences, monitoring one’s emotional state, reading fiction, reflective compassion, and perspective taking. This is an important set of skills to fall by the wayside among our students! In fact, by constantly demanding the executive attention of students for the purposes of abstract learning, we are actively robbing students of the opportunity to use the limited resource of attention for the purposes of personal reflection, meaning-making, and compassionate perspective taking. Let’s be clear: both executive functions and imagination-related cognitive processes are critical to learning. However, when these networks couple together, we can get the best learning outcomes out of students. People who live a meaningful life of creativity and accomplishment combine dreaming with doing. A common thread that runs through both grit and imagination is trial-and-error: the ability to dream, to set concrete goals, to construct various strategies to reach the goal, to tinker with alternative approaches to reaching the goal, and to constantly revise approaches where necessary. -

Pachai, Anita Acai, Andrew B. LoGiudice, and Joseph A. Kim McMaster University Our minds naturally wander for much of our daily lives. Here we review how mind wandering, or task-unrelated thought, impacts comprehension during lectures and reading, and how it relates to general academic success. In some situations, mind wandering may not hinder performance, and may even aid in creativity, future plan- ning, problem solving, and relief from boredom. We distill research on the negative and potentially positive effects of mind wandering to suggest ways that teachers can reduce and redirect mind wandering in the classroom. To conclude we suggest that, rather than attempt to eliminate mind wandering entirely, we should attempt to alleviate mind wandering at the most strategic times, using research to suggest what techniques should be applied, and when. INTRODUCTION Here is a staggering truth: the ontology of the human person currently embraced by the most vocal Christian scholars working on this issue is a view that almost no Christians thought plausible only 100 years ago. Until recently, the dominant view among Christian thinkers has been various forms of mind-body dualism (hereafter, dualism), according to which the human person comprises body and soul.1 In stark disagreement, many contemporary Christian scholars vigorously advance antidualism and defend physicalism (reductive or nonreductive), understanding the human person as fundamentally physical.2 These Christian physicalists proffer the strong impression of a uniform rejection of dualism across the neuroscientific, theological, and philosophical communities, as if dualism has been defeated, just as phlogiston was in in the 1770s. Here is another staggering truth: this certain-defeat-of-dualism narrative is demonstrably false. There is, in fact, a growing resurgence of dualism in philosophy. Middleton Dean, The Patton College of Education 3 Abstract KUTSKO, KATHLEEN A., Ph.D. May 2019, Counselor Education The Relationship Between Personality and Empathy in Counseling Students Director of Dissertation: Yegan Pillay Reports of increased incidences of violence, hate crimes, and discrimination in communities around the globe may be linked to a lack of empathy. Empathy is especially important to cultivate for counselors, as research indicates that empathy is an essential ingredient for developing successful counseling relationships, leading to positive change for clients. The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between personality and empathy in a sample of counseling students using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® as the personality measure and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index as the empathy measure. A series of MANOVAs were conducted with results reporting significant differences in empathy based on personality type. Specifically, the type preferences of Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving had significantly higher empathy scores than their opposite preferences of Introversion, Sensing, Thinking and Judging, respectively. These findings provide a starting point for future investigations in the areas of personality and empathy in counselor education and supervision programs.
