The Museum now announces a new series of fifteen programs in the art of the motion picture under the general title: Forty Years of American Film Comedy, Part i; Beginning Thursday, August 1, the series will be presented dally at 4 P.M. and on Sundays at 3 P.M. and 4 P.M. in the Museum1s auditorium at 11 West 53 Street. Instruction will thus be provided from the screen by Professors Mack Sennett, Frank Capra, W. C. Fields, Harpo and Groucho Marx, Robert Benchley and Charlie Chaplin in a new appraisal of screen comedy reviewed in the light of history. "It is very evident," states Iris Barry, Curator of the Museum's Film Library, "that the great farce-comedies, as well as the cowboy and gangster films, rank among this country1s most original contributions to the screen. We are grateful indeed to the film industry for cooperating with the Museum in providing this unique opportunity for tracing screen comedy to its sources in this group of classics now restored to view for the amateurs of the twentieth century's liveliest art.

    Complete List of Harold Lloyd Stunt Climbing Buildings After first shooting stunt climbing comedies above the Hill Street Tunnel, Lloyd branched out to film from real buildings. What should be included within the list of his stunt climbing buildings is a bit subjective. It all began with Ask Father (1919), where Harold himself climbed the first two and a half stories of the former International Bank Building (1904‐1954) at 116 Temple Street. I’ll count it later for its appearance in Safety Last! Lloyd filmed Look Out Below (1919) and High and Dizzy (1919) using sets overlooking the now-demolished Hill Street Tunnel. The High and Dizzy set replicated the façade of the Citizens National Bank Building at 5th and Spring, and a brief shot in the movie shows a stunt‐person sleepwalking on the ledge of this building. A dizzying point of view shot was filmed from the bank looking down on the corner clock of the Security and Trust Savings Bank at the SE corner of 5th and Spring across the street. The banks have been stripped of their ground floor ornamentation, but both are still standing. That makes one or two surviving buildings. Harold filmed Never Weaken (1921) from a set built atop the Ville de Paris Department Store, at 7th and Olive. He also filmed the jazz party scene for that picture on the roof of Hamburgers Department Store at 8th and Broadway, a vertigo-inducing shot also looking down at corner clock of the Security Trust and Savings Bank, and an establishing shot from the Loews State Theater Building, at 7th and Broadway, that was under construction at the time.

This image of Har- old Lloyd, the King of Daredevil Comedy, remains the single most famous and enduring scene from any silent film ever made. Harold Lloyd actually hated heights, but realized that movie audiences would be as frightened watching his “thrill films” as he was making them. He also real- ized that to be truly frightening, the experience had to be real or seem real. There was no trick photog- raphy employed in the making of “Safety Last!” nei- ther during shooting nor during post-production. Not mirrors, not animation, not glass shots, not double exposures, and not rear-screen projection of previ- ously photographed backgrounds. One day in July 1922, Harold Lloyd spied a group of people in downtown Los Angeles watching a man climbing the side of a building as a publicity stunt. “I watched him scale this whole building ... Well, it made such a terrific impression on me, and stirred my emotions to such a degree that I thought, ‘My, if I can possibly do that to an audience – if I capture that on the screen – I think I’ve got something that’s nev- er been done before.” Crowds below watch Harold Lloyd hanging around.
