Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -
Thelma & Louise Title Page
THELMA & LOUISE by Callie Khouri Final Draft June 5, 1990 FADE IN: INT. RESTAURANT - MORNING (PRESENT DAY) LOUISE is a waitress in a coffee shop. She is in her early-thirties, but too old to be doing this. She is very pretty and meticulously groomed, even at the end of her shift. She is slamming dirty coffee cups from the counter into a bus tray underneath the counter. It is making a lot of RACKET, which she is oblivious to. There is COUNTRY MUZAK in the b.g., which she hums along with. INT. THELMA'S KITCHEN - MORNING THELMA is a housewife. It's morning and she is slamming coffee cups from the breakfast table into the kitchen sink, which is full of dirty breakfast dishes and some stuff left from last night's dinner which had to "soak". She is still in her nightgown. The TV is ON in the b.g. From the kitchen, we can see an incomplete wallpapering project going on in the dining room, an obvious "do-it- yourself" attempt by Thelma. INT. RESTAURANT - MORNING Louise goes to the pay phone and dials a number. INT. THELMA'S KITCHEN - MORNING Phone RINGS. Thelma goes over to answer it. THELMA (hollering) I got it! Hello. INT. RESTAURANT - MORNING LOUISE (at pay phone) I hope you're packed, little housewife, 'cause we are outta her tonight. INT. THELMA'S KITCHEN - MORNING THELMA Well, wait now. I still have to ask Darryl if I can go. 2. LOUISE (V.O.) You mean you haven't asked him yet? For Christ sake, Thelma, is he your husband or your father? It's just two days. -
“The Case of the Unfaithful Translator” by José María Merino
“The Case of the Unfaithful Translator” by José María Merino translated by Erin Goodman RT/TC 005 (2020) ISSN: 2694-2801 2 Instituto Cervantes at Harvard University (FAS) Observatorio de la lengua española y las culturas hispánicas en los Estados Unidos / Observatory of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures in the United States 2 Arrow Street 4th fl., Faculty of Arts and Sciences - Harvard University. Cambridge, MA 02138 – USA http://cervantesobservatory.fas.harvard.edu [email protected] Introduction “The Case of The Unfaithful Translator” is a short story by prolific Spanish writer and poet José María Merino, originally in the collection titled Cuentos del Barrio de Refugio (Ed. Alfaguara, 1994). Merino is known for his capacity to realistically capture the complex human experience from a personal perspective, while weaving in dreams, fantasy, and the creative experience, such as the idea of entering into fiction itself; this story is a prime example – Merino presents an intriguing insider’s perspective on the day-to-day activities of a translator, in this case one who succumbs to his temptation to manipulate the original text. Considered one of the most prominent contemporary Spanish writers, Merino is best known for his novels and short stories, though he has also written several books of poetry, literary essays, books for children, and two memoirs. Merino has taught and conducted workshops and seminars in Spain and the United States at numerous institutions, including at Dartmouth College, the Universidad Complutense, Universidad Carlos III, and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez y Pelayo (Santander). He has received many important awards and distinctions including the National Children’s and Young People’s Literature Award (1993) and the National Narrative Literature Award (2013). -

THE RAINBOW CHILD by Lauren Keilani Kane a Capstone Project
THE RAINBOW CHILD By Lauren Keilani Kane A capstone project submitted for Graduation with University Honors May 06, 2021 University Honors University of California, Riverside APPROVED Goldberry Long Department of Creative Writing Dr. Richard Cardullo, Howard H Hays Jr. Chair University Honors ABSTRACT I am writing a fiction novella following a girl throughout her life. Each chapter of the book is on a treasured object of hers and the significance it has to her major life events. There's a red stone, an orange carnival ticket, a yellow pen, a green brooch, a blue bracelet, an indigo pendant, and a violet cabinet. These items correspond to; her first day at school, the first time she looked forward to something but missed out due to fear, her birthday and entering a writing competition, her graduation and moving out, her wedding, her marriage, and the culmination of these events and the retelling of them to her granddaughter. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to sincerely thank my mentor, Goldberry Long, for guiding me through this process and being a great Creative Writing professor. Taking her class motivated me to do this project and gave me the confidence I needed to explore writing creatively. I would also like to thank my sister, Erin, and my fiancé, Justin, for supporting and encouraging me through this process. I dedicate this book to my grandma Ruth, who inspired these stories. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS The Red Stone…page 5 The Orange Carnival Ticket…page 19 The Yellow Pen…page 31 The Green Brooch…page 39 The Blue Bracelet…page 61 The Indigo Pendant…page 67 The Violet Cabinet…page 76 4 THE RED STONE I wiped away the tomato juice running down my chin, but it already dripped onto my chest. -
Tanya Tucker
Tanya Tucker │Biography │ One of country music’s greatest legends, Tanya Tucker, has just released her much anticipated new CD, My Turn, on Saguaro Road Records. On this new album Tucker takes classic country songs originally recorded by the all time great male legends of the time and turns the tables, giving classics such as “You Don’t Know Me” and “Oh, Lonesome Me” a powerful reconstruction from a woman’s point of view. Only 13 when her provocative “Delta Dawn” caused a nationwide stir and became a Top 10 country hit, Tucker has built one of the most successful and compelling careers in music. Considered one of the very few females of the “outlaw” country movement, she holds a Grammy award, two Country Music Association awards, Two Academy of Country Music awards, and three CMT Awards. 23 of her albums have landed in the country Top 40 chart since her 1972 debut, and she has amassed 10 #1 country singles, 33 that have reached the Top 5, and 41 in the Top 10. Always reinventing herself, Tanya again became a media darling in 2005 as the star of her own television reality series, Tuckerville. The primetime series was a huge hit for TLC, generating the cable network’s highest Neilsen ratings ever, and guaranteed the show’s return in 2006. Having sold over 50 million records over the last three decades, country music icon Tanya Tucker is among the all-time best selling female vocalists in country music. “Surprisingly mature at a very young age, Tanya Tucker continues to grow today, taming and conquering tunes long assumed to be a man’s territory. -

VOL. 7, NO. 10 Cover Photo by Rick Malkin FEATURES ALEX VAN HALEN Rock musicians are often accused of being more concerned with the rock 'n' roll lifestyle than with the music.
