The Camp Brooklyn Fund was created to give these Debra Garcia children an opportunity to attend accredited Executive Director sleep-away camp and have the experience of a lifetime! Just $750 will send a child to Daphnee Champagne camp for two weeks. Linda Chase Teamwork, loyalty, wholesome health habits, responsibility and personal respect and Ken Feldman appreciation for nature are all a part of a child’s education at summer camp. Intensive camp experiences can truly open up a world Eileen Holmes of opportunities to young people. Plus, sending young people to camp also gives Lois Jackson working parents/caregivers a much- needed break. Allan Kramer II In the 2013 season, through the agency that Camille Socci administers our funds, a camper database was implemented enabling us to track the academic progress as well as social and emo- tional growth of our funded campers. The data collected will provide a clear picture of the progress of our campers year to year. For more information visit us at www.campbrooklyn.org 2 October 23, 2014 Dear Friends, We are thrilled to have you join us tonight in the spectacular 40/40 Club at the Barclays Center, as we honor our founder Marty Markowitz and our very good friend, Gina Argento. Their commitment to making Brooklyn a better place to live, work and play is an inspiration to us all. With the generosity of our corporate partners and caring individuals, we have been able to send thousands of deserving kids to sleep-away camp for an experi- ence they will never forget. There is a saying ‘Noblesse Oblige’… with wealth, power, and prestige come social responsibility. Meaning, those who are capable to help someone who is less fortunate, should do so. By being here this evening, placing an ad in the journal, or making a donation, you are doing just that...and we thank you. Thank you to our wonderful Honorees, Marty Markowitz and Gina Argento, to James Park at Broadway Stages, to Angelica Shuhala at Barclays Center, and to Darci Tapia with the 40/40 Club, for making this amazing evening a reality. And a very special thanks to the wonderful Camp Brooklyn Fund Board of Directors for all their time and effort, each giving in their own way, to Karen Rosenberg and LaShawn Smith from Empire Events Group for organizing this event, to our hardworking volunteers, and to our sponsors for making this amazing evening possible. Even in these economically trying times we can all still make a difference and tonight is proof of that!!!! Have fun and bid high to support Camp Brooklyn Fund!!! With warmest regards, Debra Garcia Executive Director 3 Photograph by Marley White, NYC & Company 4 MARTY MARKOWITZ At 9 years old, shortly after his father’s untimely passing, Marty Mar- kowitz was sent to a “charity” camp with funds collected by generous neighbors and friends. This wonderful experience planted the seeds that, decades later, led him to found Camp Brooklyn in 2002. Marty served 23 years as a New York State Senator – during which he founded the popular Seaside Summer Concert Series and the Mar- tin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series. In 2001, Marty was elected to his “dream job” as Brooklyn Borough President, a position he held for the maximum 3-term limit of 12 years. It was during his time as Borough President that Brooklyn saw the greatest borough-wide renaissance. His signature achievements include the development of the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal, envisioning the move of the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn, organizing the construction of the state-of-the-art Bar- clays Center, creating the Brooklyn Tourism Office and the annual Dine In Brooklyn Restaurant Week, the Brooklyn Book Festival, and Take Your Man to the Doctor Campaign. Marty was instrumental in revitalizing many neighborhoods and landmarks, including the Kings Theater on Flatbush Avenue due to open in January and the Coney Island Entertainment Center with construction to commence in the near future. In March 2014, Marty Markowitz joined NYC & Company, New York City’s non-profit destination marketing organization as Vice Presi- dent, Borough Promotion & Engagement. In his role he is responsible for collaborating with NYC & Company staff to build awareness and encourage travel to New York City, especially to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Marty and his wife Jamie have been married for close to 15 years. They reside in the Windsor Terrace section of Brooklyn and are proud parents of a 14 year old African grey parrot named BEEP. 5 6 GINA ARGENTO Gina Argento is Co-President, with her brother Tony Argento, of Broadway Stages, a New York-based television and music pro- duction facility company which began in 1983. Broadway Stages is also now in the process of transforming Staten Island’s Arthur Kill Correctional Facility into a 70 acre moviemaking mecca, the largest stage facility in the region. Gina’s passion is to expand and strengthen the New York film and television industry, while being actively involved in the com- munity. She prides herself on being a good neighbor, whether through charitable donations, remediating brownfield sites, cleaning up local parks, supporting local business, and educa- tional workshops such as “Green Science Week” and PS 110 The Monitor School, to name a few. In addition to her generous support of Camp Brooklyn Fund, Gina is involved with YMCA Greenpoint, Boy Scouts of Ameri- ca, Kings County Democratic County, Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce, Solar 1, and many more.
