THE JOURNAL OF INDOLOGICAL STUDIES Volume-I || Issue-I Appeasing Sastha : V. Aravind Subramanyam ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appeasing Sastha : Theory Text And Practice Of Sastha Preethi In South India Shri Maha Sasthru Priya Dasan V. Aravind Subramanyam, (Sastha Aravind) President, Shri Maha Sasthru Seva Sangam Thejovathy, 94 B, Third Street, Tatabad, Coimbatore 641012 Ph:(0)99946 41801 Email: [email protected] Sabarimalai Yatra, Ayyappa Pooja and Sasthapreethi are the three, most well known events that please the Kaliyuga Varadha Swami Shree Dharma Sastha. For a Ayyappa devotee the chanting of the celebrated three words is everything - " Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" – Oh Lord Ayyappa, I come to Thee for refuge. The high and low meet on equal terms in the presence of the Lord who is known as Dharmasastha – one who teaches and upholds dharma. Sasthapreethi is a time tested mode of worshipping Lord Dharmasastha in a very religious way by various samoohams and organizations in and around Kerala, and now in all parts of the country and abroad. The religious pooja is given more importance followed by Annadhanam. One should not confuse Sastha Preethi with Ayyappa puja or Sabarimalai Yatra; Sastha Preethi in a unique and different form of worship which has its own methods and procedures. Origin : The spreading of Sastha Preethi as a cult (other than Kallidaikurichi) dates back to three centuries. Over 300 years ago a handful of enterprising men, started from a village called Kallidaikurichi,(Tirunelveli district). Their aim was to establish some business and improve their material prospects. The Karandhaiyar palayam Samooham (of Kallidaikurichi) situated on the banks of river Thamirabarani, was the origin of a concept called Sastha Preethi.

  • S. Robertson, "Periya EV Ramasami's Critique of Priestly Hinduism and Its Implications for Social Reforms,"
IJT 4511&2 (2003), pp.75-87 Periyar E. V. Ramasami's 1 Critique of Pri~stly Hinduism 2 and its Implications for Social Reforms S Robertson* 1. Introduction Protests against superstitious beliefs and practices associated with religion and the caste system is exceedingly old in India. The indigenous, ascetic and pre-Aryan religious movement called the Sramanas was the first to oppose priestly rituals, superstitions and caste system. Its two offshoots, Jainism and Buddhism laid greater emphasis on reason and disapproved irrational practices and inequalities in the society. The materialist carvaka system insisted that there is no necessity for faith in religion, rites, priests and vedas. The Upanishads are earnest quest for truth beyond externals of religions. Bhakti movement in Hinduism, to some extent, disfavored mechanical rites and caste system. Siddhars in the Sout)l and Sants in the North India advocated simple life and negated ritualism. Ramalinga Swam'i, in Tamil Nadu condemned caste and superstitious beliefs. Sikhjsm was still another attempt i~· this direction. With the influence of British, people like Ram Mohan Roy, Keshub Chander Sen and Ranade initiated many social reforms. Mahatma Jotirao Phooley andAmbedkar radically criticized priestly exploitations. It was in this context that Periyar E. V. Ramasami is significant. He was of the opinion that all the inequalities and oppressions found in the society were created by priestly!Brahmanic religion. Rather than opting for a new religion, Periyar thought, religions should be rationally evaluated from the perspective of human life. Any religion or religious practice that obstructs human dignity should be abandoned. He stood for self-respect (individual freedom and dignity).
