Verdana Pro Bold Free Download the Web’S Favorite Typefaces Go Pro verdana pro bold free download The Web’s Favorite Typefaces Go Pro. Georgia and Verdana rule the web. Billions of pages use these fonts, the workhorse typefaces of the web for over fifteen years. Now these families have been expanded, enhancing their role in print, web, and mobile use. Verdana and Georgia's prevalence is no accident: they were distributed widely, then relied upon by web designers for years. But their ubiquity has merit: Georgia and Verdana were two of the first typefaces created specifically for screen use. They were born from the brain and hand of distinguished type designer Matthew Carter, crafted for screen readability, especially at small sizes. The production was crowned with Tom Rickner’s exhaustive hinting for pristine display in any rendering environment. It was inevitable that these two faces would find their way into print. Unfortunately, the qualities that made them great on screen made them less than ideal on paper, especially when large. The small number of styles also limited the families’ flexibility. Many organizations, like IKEA, which call for these typefaces in their style guides have only had two weights to work with. That can’t be easy for a company with a 376-page catalog and huge facilities with complex tagging and wayfinding requirements. Starting today, relying on one’s favorite set of webfonts no longer means being confined to regular, italic, bold, and bold italic. Thanks to a partnership between Font Bureau, Carter & Cone, and Monotype Imaging, Georgia and Verdana are now extended families, enabling much more versatile use on screen and paper. Carter and Rickner worked with Steve Matteson of Monotype Imaging and David Berlow of Font Bureau to create the new, expanded editions of the fonts. Georgia Pro and Verdana Pro boast 20 styles each, adding Light, Semi Bold, and Black to the Regular and Bold of the originals. Perhaps even more welcome is a Condensed width in each of these styles, dramatically enhancing Georgia and Verdana’s usefulness in a variety of settings. If Verdana was ever too wide for a job, there is now a Condensed option ready to fill in. All these new weights and widths have accompanying italics, of course. And all are hinted with the same high standards of quality, so they can be used at nearly any size with confidence. The extended families aren’t only useful for web and print. Font Bureau’s General Manager, Sam Berlow, says the mobile community will welcome the news as well: “The combo of Georgia and Verdana in all these styles will be great for platforms like iOS which utilize portrait and landscape layouts. Weight and width choices will give app developers more flexibility when creating interfaces. Verdana and Georgia were built to be legible, now they are legible and versatile.” In addition to the new family members, Georgia Pro and Verdana Pro include enhanced typographic features, like small caps, and a full range of figures with the user-preferred lining numerals as the default. Georgia Pro and Verdana Pro are available for immediate purchase and download from Font Bureau, with web versions available from Webtype. New Weights and Widths. • 15 the Effect of Font Type on Screen Readability by People with Dyslexia
The Effect of Font Type on Screen Readability by People with Dyslexia LUZ RELLO and RICARDO BAEZA-YATES, Web Research Group, DTIC, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain Around 10% of the people have dyslexia, a neurological disability that impairs a person’s ability to read and write. There is evidence that the presentation of the text has a significant effect on a text’s accessibility for people with dyslexia. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no experiments that objectively 15 measure the impact of the typeface (font) on screen reading performance. In this article, we present the first experiment that uses eye-tracking to measure the effect of typeface on reading speed. Using a mixed between-within subject design, 97 subjects (48 with dyslexia) read 12 texts with 12 different fonts. Font types have an impact on readability for people with and without dyslexia. For the tested fonts, sans serif , monospaced, and roman font styles significantly improved the reading performance over serif , proportional, and italic fonts. On the basis of our results, we recommend a set of more accessible fonts for people with and without dyslexia. • Vision Performance Institute
Vision Performance Institute Technical Report Individual character legibility James E. Sheedy, OD, PhD Yu-Chi Tai, PhD John Hayes, PhD The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the legibility of individual characters. Previous work in our lab [2], including the first study in this sequence, has studied the relative legibility of fonts with different anti- aliasing techniques or other presentation medias, such as paper. These studies have tested the relative legibility of a set of characters configured with the tested conditions. However the relative legibility of individual characters within the character set has not been studied. While many factors seem to affect the legibility of a character (e.g., character typeface, character size, image contrast, character rendering, the type of presentation media, the amount of text presented, viewing distance, etc.), it is not clear what makes a character more legible when presenting in one way than in another. In addition, the importance of those different factors to the legibility of one character may not be held when the same set of factors was presented in another character. Some characters may be more legible in one typeface and others more legible in another typeface. What are the character features that affect legibility? For example, some characters have wider openings (e.g., the opening of “c” in Calibri is wider than the character “c” in Helvetica); some letter g’s have double bowls while some have single (e.g., “g” in Batang vs. “g” in Verdana); some have longer ascenders or descenders (e.g., “b” in Constantia vs.

  • Style Guide: Best Practices in Formatting
Style Guide: Best Practices in Formatting According to Colin Wheildon, author of Type & Layout: Are You Communicating or Just Making Pretty Shapes, it’s possible that 75% of your readers attempting to access your content (whether online, in print, or via email) will disregard what you’re saying based solely on the type of font you choose. That’s right—75%! That’s why it’s critically important to choose fonts that are clean and accessible and to choose a layout that is visual but not busy. Don’t try to pack too much into your layout, or else you may run the risk of your message being lost. First, let’s look at the differences between a “serif” and “sans serif” font. Serif fonts are more embellished, with small lines attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. Popular serif fonts include Times New Roman, Georgia, and Garamond. Many books, newspaper, and magazines use a serif font. In print mediums, serif fonts are often easier to read. Sans serif fonts don’t have the added embellishments. These fonts are often used in advertisements, and are generally easier to read. In print, sans serif fonts are often used as a headline, whereas serif fonts are used for the body text. Popular sans serif fonts include Helvetica, Arial, and Calibri. There are some simple best practices in formatting print, online, and email communications for your organization. These best practices will make your information easier to understand and more accessible to the average reader. When do I use a serif font like Times New Roman or Garamond? For print items, it’s suggested to utilize serif fonts for brochures, donation letters in the mail, etc.

  • Man of Letters: Matthew Carter's Life in Type Design
MAN OF LETTERS Matthew Carter's life in type design BY ALEC WILKINSON Onward And Upward With The Arts; Pg. 56 December 5, 2005 Matthew Carter is often described as the most widely read man in the world. Carter designs typefaces. He is universally acknowledged as the most significant designer of type in America, and as having only one or two peers in Europe. A well regarded British type designer named Dave Farey once told a reporter, "There's Matthew Carter, and then there's the rest of us." Carter is sixty‐eight. He is British, and he lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He works in a room in his apartment. He has designed type for magazines such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Sports Illustrated, Wired, National Geographic, and Business Week; and for newspapers, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Guardian, in London. He designed Verdana, for several years the signature typeface of Microsoft; Bell Centennial, the typeface used by A.T. & T. in the phone book; and type called Galliard, which has been used by the U.S. Postal Service on a stamp. Carter has a partner named Cherie Cone who lives in California and sees to the business side of their firm, which is called Carter & Cone Type. Recently, he's been engaged with three projects. One involved designing type for Le Monde, the French newspaper, which wanted a different appearance; one, still under way, is for Yale, where Carter teaches (the university wants a typeface for its official documents, its signs, and the work of its students and faculty); and the third was for the Times.

  • „Bitstream“ Fonts
Key to the „Bitstream“ Fonts The history of typefaces is the history of forgeries. One of the greatest forgers of the 20th century was Matthew Carter. The Bitstream website (http://www.myfonts.com) describes him as follows: Matthew Carter of United Kingdom. Born: 1937 Son of Harry Carter, Royal Designer for Industry, contemporary British type designer and ultimate craftsman, trained as a punchcutter at Enschedé by Paul Rädisch, responsible for Crosfield's typographic program in the early 1960s, Mergenthaler Linotype's house designer 1965-1981. Carter co-founded Bitstream with Mike Parker in 1981. In 1991 he left Bitstream to form Carter & Cone with Cherie Cone. In 1997 he was awarded the TDC Medal, the award from the Type Directors Club presented to those „who have made significant contributions to the life, art, and craft of typography“. Carter’s „significant contribution to the life, art, and craft of typography“ consisted of forging the Linotype typeface collection. Carter can be characterized as a split personality. On the one hand, he has designed several original typefaces. On the other hand, he has forged hundreds of fonts. The following lists reveal that ca. 90% of the „Bitstream“ fonts are forgeries of the fonts contained in the catalog „LinoTypeCollection 1987“ („Mergenthaler Type Library“), i.e. the „Bitstream“ fonts are „nefarious evil knock-off clones“ (Bruno Steinert) of fonts sold by Linotype in the mid-1980s.1 „L“ in the following lists denotes that the font is contained in the „LinoTypeCollection 1987“. In the mid-1980s, the Linotype library comprised hundreds of typefaces with a total of 1700 fonts.

Even at small sizes the face exudes a sense of friendliness; a feeling of intimacy many Georgia would argue has been eroded from Times New Roman through overuse. This is as much testament to the skill of the typeface’s designer, Matthew Carter, as it is to any intrinsic quality of the face’s design, since the small pixel spaces of the screen can be a harrowing canvas for any type designer. In Georgia, Carter has successfully managed to create a typeface family which combines high legibility Georgia with character and charm. Georgia4 5 GeorgiaGeorgia Georgia bold 58 pt Backstory Designed in 1996 by Matthew Carter. Georgia is the serif companion to the first Microsoft sans serif screen font, Verdana. It was designed specifically to address the challenges of on-screen display and hand-instructed by leading hinting expert, Monotype’s Tom Rickner. Georgia was jokingly named after a tabloid headline ‘Alien heads found in Georgia.’ If you must have one serif face for reading on a computer, then you’ve found the best one right here. At high resolutions and larger sizes on screen, it’s evident that Georgia’s ancestory is essentially that of Didot and - most noticeably - of Scotch Roman.
