With an impressive musical résumé in film and television as well as the concert stage, his achievements have received both critical praise and popular acclaim. Larry has completed his latest score for Straw Dogs. Directed by Rod Lurie starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgård. Just prior to this was Nothing but the Truth starring Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon and Alan Alda. A compelling political drama about first amendment rights. Which followed on the heels of Resurrecting the Champ starringSamuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett. All collaborations with writer-director Rod Lurie. Most notably, he wrote the score for The Contender starring Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Jeff Bridges, a highly regarded political drama written and directed by Rod Lurie, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. This political drama edge led them toCommander in Chief, which became the number one most successful new TV series when launched by ABC. Larry also enjoyed special recognition when he teamed with the Classic Rock legends, YES, co-composing ten original songs on the new CD release, Magnification, as well as writing overtures, arrangements and conducting the orchestra on their Symphonic Tour of the World. In 2004 Larry was nominated for a Primetime Emmy as composer of best original score for ABC's drama series Line of Fire. He also wrote the music for Mike Binder's comedy series The Mind of the Married Man, on HBO, as well as Man About Town starring Ben Affleck. Larry also enjoyed special recognition for his score of Lurie's early release, Deterrence, a doomsday thriller starring Kevin Pollack and Timothy Hutton. Prior to this, a project based on Ed Wood's last script, I Woke Up Early the Day I Died, provided him with a unique opportunity to write a most unusual score for a silent movie produced by and starring Billy Zane. Larry recorded his original score for the docudrama, Missions, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. The series is to be launched in Europe in the spring of 2005. Larry has two Emmy awards to his credit for the best documentary score Jonas Salk: Personally Speaking, and for Residue a short subject film about the US early involvement in Cambodia. He's also composed the music for a variety of features that have shown at theSundance, Berlin and Toronto International Festivals. A graduate of the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific, he began his senior year as the recipient of the ASCAP award for student composers. He went on to earn his Masters of Music in Composition at the University of California at San Diego where he studied with Roger Reynolds, Toru Takemitsu and Pauline Oliveros. Subsequently, his composing, orchestrating and conducting skills took him to the world of film scoring where he won theNew York Film Award for "Best Score.” Larry has also composed, conducted and produced over eighty CD recordings. His music has been performed by a number of symphony orchestras and his recent composition, Water Unfolding, a fantasy for orchestra commissioned by the San Diego Symphony, has been warmly received by the public as well as obtaining excellent critical reviews. Menagerie, a suite for solo organ, was recently commissioned by the Spreckels Organ Society for its 85th birthday and performed at the world’s largest outdoor Organ Pavilion in San Diego's Balboa Park. Assignment: Compose some thematic material from just a script. Assignment: describe the “Tone” of selected film(s) Assignment: Select, from the work print choices, a title that you will compose original score to. You will have the length of the semester to do this. Playback of your final results will be the last day of class. Session 2: Execution and Picture Obligations • Working with the film making team: Director, producer, “the studio”, film and music editors. • Timings: Using click, dealing with free timing and rubato. • Striking critical hits, overall spotting concerns, picking tempos. • Dealing with Temp tracks. Assignment: Create a straight click track that will achieve the most hits possible. Create a rubato click track so changing tempos guide us to the desired hits. Assignment: Compose fresh material in response to a temp track. Session 3: Dramatic Choices/POV • Determining the best dramatic choice: Playing through a scene, playing overview, playing character feeling, playing environment. • Amp up the drama by pushing the pacing.

THIS WEEK'S PANEL - Craig Courtice, a short filmmaker who isn't very tall - Alison Broverman, freelance writer and occasional playwright - Jodie Katz, whose own wedding gown was inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Check her out at www.thesocialbutterfly.ca. THIS WEEK'S FILM ENCHANTED Craig Ah princesses, the scourge of feminists everywhere. These lasses seem content to go through life searching for nothing but a prince. Enchanted certainly winks at all the princess films of yore, but despite its meta-fictional packaging, it's still gooey Disney on the inside. Alison Gooey is right. I've never been much into princesses -- my feminist friends and I often sit around ranting about how bad Disney's princess marketing tactics are for women; princesses are boring and passive, and they never do anything! Surely little girls should be taught to aspire to more than just wearing pretty dresses? I was hoping Enchanted would be a satirical, subversive romp. It wasn't, although it had some clever moments; I loved the New York vermin cleaning up the apartment and the queen's crony questioning his sense of self while watching a soap opera. Also, is there anyone more adorable in the world than Amy Adams? Her character should be cloying and irritating, but she's just so damn charming that she kind of makes the entire film work.

    Film Reviews Jonathan Lighter Lebanon (2009) he timeless figure of the raw recruit overpowered by the shock of battle first attracted the full gaze of literary attention in Crane’s Red Badge of Courage (1894- T 95). Generations of Americans eventually came to recognize Private Henry Fleming as the key fictional image of a young American soldier: confused, unprepared, and pretty much alone. But despite Crane’s pervasive ironies and his successful refutation of genteel literary treatments of warfare, The Red Badge can nonetheless be read as endorsing battle as a ticket to manhood and self-confidence. Not so the First World War verse of Lieutenant Wilfred Owen. Owen’s antiheroic, almost revolutionary poems introduced an enduring new archetype: the young soldier as a guileless victim, meaninglessly sacrificed to the vanity of civilians and politicians. Written, though not published during the war, Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” “The Parable of the Old Man and the Young,” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” especially, exemplify his judgment. Owen, a decorated officer who once described himself as a “pacifist with a very seared conscience,” portrays soldiers as young, helpless, innocent, and ill- starred. On the German side, the same theme pervades novelist Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1928): Lewis Milestone’s film adaptation (1930) is often ranked among the best war movies of all time. Unlike Crane, neither Owen nor Remarque detected in warfare any redeeming value; and by the late twentieth century, general revulsion of the educated against war solicited a wide acceptance of this sympathetic image among Western War, Literature & the Arts: an international journal of the humanities / Volume 32 / 2020 civilians—incomplete and sentimental as it is.

    Before Night Falls Dir: Julian Schnabel, 2000 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada There are two remarkable things about Before Night Falls, based on Reinaldo Arenas's homonymous memoir, and one remarkable reason for them. First, director Julian Schnabel maintains a physically-draining tension throughout much of the film; and second, he grants a centrality to writing that Arenas himself demands. He is able to accomplish these things because his Arenas is Javier Bardem. The foreknowledge that this is a film about a man in Castro's Cuba, and a man in prison there for a time, prepares an audience for explicit tortures that never come. The expectation persists, as it must have for the imprisoned and persecuted man, so that the emotional tension experienced by the audience provides a tiny entry into the overpowering and relentless tension of daily life for Arenas and everyone else who is not a perfect fit for the Revolutionary mold. In the midst of this the writer finds refuge in his writing. Before Night Falls is the story of a writer who has been persecuted even for being a writer, never mind for what he wrote or how he lived, and who writes regardless of the risks and costs. In the childhood backgrounding segment of the film, Schnabel clearly establishes this foundation by showing a grandfather who is so opposed to having a poet in his house that he relocates the family in order to remove young Reinaldo from the influence of a teacher who dares to speak of the boy's gift.

She ended by telling the audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Over the Years This glimpse into an actor’s life was so well received that it began a tradition of introducing each Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast with a distinguished actor relating a brief anecdote and sharing thoughts about what the art and craft mean on a personal level. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, just one actor performed that customary opening. For the 9th Annual SAG Awards, however, producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a twist. She observed it would be more representative of the acting profession as a whole if several actors, drawn from all ages and backgrounds, told shorter versions of their individual journeys. To add more fun and to emphasize the universal truths of being an actor, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera.     ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality.
