He is best known for his roles on Power Rangers S.P.D., Harper's Island and Slasher. He is currently starring in CBS' Ransom. He portrayed Jamil Dexter as a recurring role on TNT's Falling Skies. He also starred as U.S. Customs agent Dale Jakes on Graceland, Marco on Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, Danny Booker on Chicago Fire and Bennet Ahmed on The Killing McLaren was awarded the Golden Maple Award for Best Actor in a TV series broadcasted in the U.S. in 2015, for his role on Graceland. Bruno Gunn most recently starred opposite James Marsden in the new HBO series Westworld and finished filming the graphic novel based, feature film Officer Downe directed by Shawn Crahan (Slipknot) & producer Mark Neveldine (Ghost Rider & Crank 1&2) which will be released in 2016. He is most recognized for his role as Brutus in the 2013 blockbuster film, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. For more than 10 years he's amassed a lengthy list of roles in TV and film - "True Blood," "Sons of Anarchy," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "Monk" and Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz. In 2015 he extends his thespian reach with roles alongside Oliva Wilde in Lazarus, Vatican Tapes directed by Mark Neveldine, and Barely Lethal with Jessica Alba and Samuel Jackson. Bruno got his first taste of Hollywood from film legend, Woody Allen who cast him in the 1998 comedy Celebrity. -

Each week in this space, experts, artists and paying movie customers come together to take apart a recent release. It's salty. It's full of hot air. It's the Popcorn Panel. THIS WEEK'S PANEL - Craig Courtice, a short filmmaker who isn't very tall - Alison Broverman, freelance writer and occasional playwright - Jodie Katz, whose own wedding gown was inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Check her out at www.thesocialbutterfly.ca. THIS WEEK'S FILM ENCHANTED Craig Ah princesses, the scourge of feminists everywhere. These lasses seem content to go through life searching for nothing but a prince. Enchanted certainly winks at all the princess films of yore, but despite its meta-fictional packaging, it's still gooey Disney on the inside. Alison Gooey is right. I've never been much into princesses -- my feminist friends and I often sit around ranting about how bad Disney's princess marketing tactics are for women; princesses are boring and passive, and they never do anything! Surely little girls should be taught to aspire to more than just wearing pretty dresses? I was hoping Enchanted would be a satirical, subversive romp. It wasn't, although it had some clever moments; I loved the New York vermin cleaning up the apartment and the queen's crony questioning his sense of self while watching a soap opera. Also, is there anyone more adorable in the world than Amy Adams? Her character should be cloying and irritating, but she's just so damn charming that she kind of makes the entire film work. -

Film Reviews Jonathan Lighter Lebanon (2009) he timeless figure of the raw recruit overpowered by the shock of battle first attracted the full gaze of literary attention in Crane’s Red Badge of Courage (1894- T 95). Generations of Americans eventually came to recognize Private Henry Fleming as the key fictional image of a young American soldier: confused, unprepared, and pretty much alone. But despite Crane’s pervasive ironies and his successful refutation of genteel literary treatments of warfare, The Red Badge can nonetheless be read as endorsing battle as a ticket to manhood and self-confidence. Not so the First World War verse of Lieutenant Wilfred Owen. Owen’s antiheroic, almost revolutionary poems introduced an enduring new archetype: the young soldier as a guileless victim, meaninglessly sacrificed to the vanity of civilians and politicians. Written, though not published during the war, Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” “The Parable of the Old Man and the Young,” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” especially, exemplify his judgment. Owen, a decorated officer who once described himself as a “pacifist with a very seared conscience,” portrays soldiers as young, helpless, innocent, and ill- starred. On the German side, the same theme pervades novelist Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1928): Lewis Milestone’s film adaptation (1930) is often ranked among the best war movies of all time. Unlike Crane, neither Owen nor Remarque detected in warfare any redeeming value; and by the late twentieth century, general revulsion of the educated against war solicited a wide acceptance of this sympathetic image among Western War, Literature & the Arts: an international journal of the humanities / Volume 32 / 2020 civilians—incomplete and sentimental as it is. -

Before Night Falls Dir: Julian Schnabel, 2000 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada There are two remarkable things about Before Night Falls, based on Reinaldo Arenas's homonymous memoir, and one remarkable reason for them. First, director Julian Schnabel maintains a physically-draining tension throughout much of the film; and second, he grants a centrality to writing that Arenas himself demands. He is able to accomplish these things because his Arenas is Javier Bardem. The foreknowledge that this is a film about a man in Castro's Cuba, and a man in prison there for a time, prepares an audience for explicit tortures that never come. The expectation persists, as it must have for the imprisoned and persecuted man, so that the emotional tension experienced by the audience provides a tiny entry into the overpowering and relentless tension of daily life for Arenas and everyone else who is not a perfect fit for the Revolutionary mold. In the midst of this the writer finds refuge in his writing. Before Night Falls is the story of a writer who has been persecuted even for being a writer, never mind for what he wrote or how he lived, and who writes regardless of the risks and costs. In the childhood backgrounding segment of the film, Schnabel clearly establishes this foundation by showing a grandfather who is so opposed to having a poet in his house that he relocates the family in order to remove young Reinaldo from the influence of a teacher who dares to speak of the boy's gift. -

Actors' Stories are a SAG Awards® Tradition When the first Screen Actors Guild Awards® were presented on March 8, 1995, the ceremony opened with a speech by Angela Lansbury introducing the concept behind the SAG Awards and the Actor® statuette. During her remarks she shared a little of her own history as a performer: "I've been Elizabeth Taylor's sister, Spencer Tracy's mistress, Elvis' mother and a singing teapot." She ended by telling the audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Over the Years This glimpse into an actor’s life was so well received that it began a tradition of introducing each Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast with a distinguished actor relating a brief anecdote and sharing thoughts about what the art and craft mean on a personal level. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, just one actor performed that customary opening. For the 9th Annual SAG Awards, however, producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a twist. She observed it would be more representative of the acting profession as a whole if several actors, drawn from all ages and backgrounds, told shorter versions of their individual journeys. To add more fun and to emphasize the universal truths of being an actor, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera. “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality.
