Locker Pick-Up and School Items Drop-Off Schedule Locker Pick-Up and School Items Drop-off Schedule Pick-up and Drop-off Instructions • Please line up outside the bus lobby doors during your allocated time. Please follow social distancing protocols. • We will “flow” the students through the lobby a few students at a time, adhering to social distancing protocols. • There will be stations for students to drop off textbooks, library books, instruments, and other school property. • At the final station, students will pick up “locker bag” and instruments. Please adhere to the allocated times on this sheet. Siblings may pick up their items at the same time, but must be during one of the sibling’s homerooms. Let us know ahead of time by contacting your grade level AP so we can have the locker bags together. For students who have NNPS technology. Your item should be turned according to this schedule. However, if you need to keep the technology to finish work, you can let us know that when you pick up your locker items and we will make a separate appointment for you to drop off your technology. For all students: if you are not able to come during the listed time to pick up your item, we will arrange a second pick up time later in the month. Please do not come at a time different than the one listed for your homeroom because your locker items will not be available. Lockers: Lockers will be emptied and all personal locker items will be placed in a labeled bag. We are not cleaning/going through the items, so what’s in there will be in the bag. We will treat items with respect. Any school items in the locker will be kept and organized. Textbooks and library books will be scanned. 1 Gildersleeve Pick-up/Drop-off Schedule Group Date Time Chen Homeroom Thursday, June 4 8:30 – 9:15 Mills Homeroom Thursday, June 4 9:30 – 10:15 Nice Homeroom Thursday, June 4 10:30 – 11:15 Mansfield Homeroom Thursday, June 4 11:30 – 12:15 Collins Homeroom Thursday, June 4 12:30 – 1:15 Stallard Homeroom Thursday, June 4 1:30 – 2:15 Wagner Homeroom Thursday, June 4 2:30 – 3:15 Taylor/Coleman Homeroom Thursday, June 4 3:30 – 4:15 Waters-Ellis Homeroom Thursday, June 4 3:30 – 4:15 Group Date Time Gerst Homeroom Friday, June 5 8:30 – 9:15 Campbell Homeroom Friday, June 5 9:30 – 10:15 Tomlin Homeroom Friday, June 5 10:30 – 11:15 Keesecker Homeroom Friday, June 5 11:30 – 12:15 Kyllingmark Homeroom Friday, June 5 12:30 – 1:15 Fields Homeroom Friday, June 5 1:30 – 2:15 Doerner Homeroom Friday, June 5 2:30 – 3:15 Wiggins Homeroom Friday, June 5 3:30 – 4:15 Miles Homeroom Friday, June 5 3:30 – 4:15 Bush Homeroom Friday, June 5 3:30 – 4:15 Harrison Homeroom Friday, June 5 3:30 – 4:15 Group Date Time Alberg Homeroom Monday, June 8 8:30 – 9:15 Brown Homeroom Monday, June 8 9:30 – 10:15 Wright Homeroom Monday, June 8 10:30 – 11:15 Temple Homeroom Monday, June 8 11:30 – 12:15 Gaita Homeroom Monday, June 8 12:30 – 1:15 Hutchison Homeroom Monday, June 8 1:30 – 2:15 Richardson Homeroom Monday, June 8 2:30 – 3:15 Blackburn Homeroom Monday, June 8 3:30 – 4:15 C. • Protest in America Teaching Guide
TEACHING WITH PRIMARY SOURCES Protest in America Why is protest essential in a democracy? The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression (free speech and free press), assembly and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government. Defining Rights in the American Colonies The rights of private citizens were very important to those who had just fought the British and won independence for the American colonies. Their experience with the British king and Parliament had made them wary of creating a new government that was determined to protect the rights of the individual against authority. When the original version of the proposed Constitution for the United States was drafted, opponents challenged its silence on individual protections. In response, the Bill of Rights was added as the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. The very first one prohibited the federal government from restricting the right of the individual to protest government policy or to express personal opinions. It reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Whether one favors or opposes an issue, the federal government does not have the authority to silence free expression.
