In typography, “text” is defined as an ongoing sequence of words, distinct from shorter headlines or captions. The main block is often called the “body,” comprising the principal mass of content. Also known as “running text,” it can flow from one page, column, or box to another. Text can be viewed as a thing—a sound and sturdy object—or a fluid poured into the containers of page or screen. Text can be solid or liquid, body or blood. ABOUT THIS CLASS This course has two major sections: Section 1, the first Half of the Fall semester and Section 2 in the Second Half. During the first section, students will learn to recognize and differentiate the nuances in the shape or form of the Roman alphabet. Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of a large set of typographic vocabulary terms, used to define or describe individual parts of letterforms. Lastly, students will be able to recognize how nuances in the placement, contrast, scale, and grouping of typographic elements create relationships of both positive form and negative space; this is the foundation of dynamic composition. The second section of our class is devoted to the study of formal typography. Students will primarily focus efforts towards developing a greater understanding of typographic form through exercises based on the setting of words, phrases, sentences, and short paragraphs. Students will first focus on the appropriate setting of spaces in-between the letters that makeup words, while projects will gradually increase in scope and complexity up to the setting of pages of text with multiple levels of hierarchical meaning. Lastly, students will engage their typographic language and posture in collaborative and community-driven projects. All designers and artists have a healthy respect for history, natural and social sciences, mathematics, and current events. We want to encourage intentionally, be curious about the world; continue to observe how the world, and recognize the positive and negative ways of typography in design. Always be aware, be inspired, and take copious notes and findings. A DESIGN 202 | TYPOGRAPHY Fall 2019 | Monday - Wednesday | 2:30 – 4:45 | Marion Design Co. | Perquisites – Art 101, 111, 131, 133 & DC 1, 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES The successful student should be able to: - Create dynamic typographic compositions that effectively communicate meaning. - Express and use professional typographic terminology and language. - Apply nuances/techniques involved in professional typesetting. - Construct with grids to organize information and establish an effective hierarchy for the reader. - Recognize the historical evolution of typography and its role in the advancement of western civilization. EXPECTATIONS Typography is a 3 credit course. Although you will have designated work days where class time is set aside for you to work, much of our class time will consist of formal or informal critiques, lectures, discussions, or activities. You should be prepared to spend a significant amount of time in addition to class hours to complete your assignments. It is absolutely critical that you arrive to class on time with any assigned work completed, are engaged during class and stay until the class has ended. Typography and type design are components of your education as a visual communication designer. The work in this class directly relates to the work you will be doing in other art and design courses. Though assignments will be distinct for this class, underlying concepts, theories, processes, technologies and thinking are the same in all design courses. To be successful you will need to incorporate the synergy of these classes. EXPECTATIONS ATTENDANCE Attendance is mandatory. Excessive tardies or absences, or working on anything other than Typography assignments during class will cause your final grade to be lowered. If you arrive to class more than 30 minutes late, leave more than 30 minutes early or work on anything other than our coursework during class, you will be counted absent. You are allowed 1 absences for the semester; no questions asked. For every absence beyond, a reduction of one full letter grade will be assessed. An absence on any scheduled final critique day will be equivalent to 2 absences. Exceptions to this are at the discretion on a case-by-case basis. Such exceptions could include, but are not limited to, a severe illness or a death in the family, and will only be excused if accompanied by a doctor’s note or proof of death in the immediate family. Skill development and design creativity thrive in an atmosphere of open interchange among yourselves and with us. In the lab, the myriad opportunities, responsibilities, and distractions of the digital world are at your fingertips. You must resist. In other words, no e-mail, internet exploration (unless for research), or work from other classes. Remember, you are being evaluated not only for the work that you produce, but also for evidence of your professional behavior as demonstrated by your attendance and participation in class. Please help keep our studios and work spaces clean. PLEASE NO CELL PHONES AND OR TEXTING. PUT AWAY LAPTOPS DURING DISCUSSION. **All formal presentations will be held to the professional standard as if it were a real-world presentation. All presenters should dress accordingly and conduct behavior as if real clients were accepting your project. One last side note, as you realize the large amount of work from your art and design courses, I want to strongly suggest you utilize the labs and studios at Beard Art Center and Marion Design Co. as much as possible. Being present in the studios will not only help the moral of the program but will aid in your learning as projects are completed. This is where the best learning happens. GRADING AND EVALUATION GRADE RANGE Grading is based on completion of the assigned project 100-93 A work, final quality and outcomes of assigned work, attendance, 92-86 B participation, and performance in class including use of time, 85-75 C critiques and presentations. Along with digital files, all physical 74-66 D boards and deliverables must be completed, trimmed, and 65-0 F mounted appropriately prior to class. Failure in doing so will result in your work being considered late. You will receive PORTFOLIO MEETING 1 grades and formal feedback during Midterm and Final portfolio 30% meetings. PORTFOLIO MEETING 2 30% WE DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK. FINAL PROJECT/ TYPE DESIGNERLY PLEASE READ. Completing the minimum requirements of an assignment CURIOSITY qualifies as ‘C’ (or average) work. During these moments, it is imperative that you participate. Your input is valuable. I will not stand for a quiet dialogue and surfaced level and blanketed statements that go absolutely nowhere. I do not care if you like it. Push yourselves to be critical and engage with the work in front of you. Be honest and be hard, it’s your educational responsibility. Much of the content created for this course will be completed using Apple computers and the Adobe Suite. You must be pro-active in your learning about these technologies. From Lynda.com to Adobe Videos and Youtube, the amount of free knowledge about computers and programs is unlimited. Use them and find your way.

Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries. Whereas these discourses are historically distinct the 2008 financial crisis and the 2011 wave of struggles precipitated the political conditions for their intersection. Such convergence produces both tensions and possibilities. On the one hand, technopopulism engenders a radically participatory model of democracy, which is ultimately anti-institutional as citizens cooperate and engage in sophisticated decision-making without the mediation of professional politicians. On the other hand, the more electorally successful technopopulist parties are led by charismatic leaders who synthesize the positions that emerge from the netroots to mobi- lize them against the establishment. These two seemingly contradictory aspects precipitate in two variants of technopopulism: a leaderless-technocratic variant, which is derived from the open source mode of governance and from early experiments of the Global Justice Movement in networked self-government; and a leaderist-populist variant, which is more strictly focused on the electoral competition as an intrinsically hegemonic practice. The article concludes with a reflection on the discursive complementarity of these two variants.     Graphic Design in the Postmodern Era By Mr. Keedy This essay was based on lectures presented at FUSE 98, San Francisco, May 28, and The AIGA National Student Design Conference, CalArts, June 14, 1998. It was first published in 1998 in Emigre 47. Any discussion of postmodernism must be preceded by at least a provisional definition of modernism. First there is modernism with a capital "M," which designates a style and ideology and that is not restricted to a specific historical moment or geographical location. Modernist designers from the Bauhaus in Germany, the De Style in Holland, and Constructivism in Russia, share essentially the same Modernist ideology as designers like Paul Rand, Massimo Vignelli, and Eric Spiekermann. Its primary tenet is that the articulation of form should always be derived from the programmatic dictates of the object being designed. In short, form follows function. Modernism was for the most part formed in art schools, where the pedagogical strategies were developed that continue to this day in design schools. It is a formalist, rationalist, visual language that can be applied to a wide range of circumstances. All kinds of claims can and have been made in an effort to keep Modernism eternally relevant and new. The contradiction of being constant, yet always new, has great appeal for graphic designers, whose work is so ephemeral. Then there is the modern, with a small "m." It is often confused with Modernism with a big M, but being a modern designer simply means being dedicated to working in a way that is contemporary and innovative, regardless of what your particular stylistic or ideological bias may be.

Meanwhile, the world was undergoing the reorganization of political structures after WW1. “Modernization” was also pursued in Korea, a colony of the Japanese Empire, as it had the will needed by weaker countries to survive independently among world powers. In other words, the technique determines possibilities which are then perceived and translated by operators or others, notably photographers. With regard to photo/graphics, my position is the same: the introduction of photography into graphics systems was to engender new possibilities and reinvigorate the question of graphic design. And this in turn raises another issue: the printing of the photograph, which is to say, its assimilation to both the print and the illustration, with the mass distribution that implies.
