Film Shooting Manual for Shooting of Films in Delhi FILM SHOOTING MANUAL FOR SHOOTING OF FILMS IN DELHI Delhi Tourism Govt. of NCT of Delhi 1 “I asked my soul: What is Delhi? She replied: The world is the body and Delhi its life. - Mirza Ghalib” A city full of historical wonders, Delhi has many tourist sites. Sprinkled with ruins, one can walk through timelines, from one era to another, from one world to another and from one story to another. From the ancient to the medieval and from the modern to the contemporary, one can experience the city through its monuments, forts, ruins, old and new towns that represent India’s history. Embracing two worlds, Old Delhi is a labyrinth of mysterious narrow lanes, havelis and majestic mosques and New Delhi is composed of spacious tree lined avenues, imposing government buildings and modern infrastructure. It embodies the stark, almost absurd, contrast of India: A world class metro system, the chaos of Old Delhi and the Colonial serenity of Lutyens Delhi. 2 Delhi has a rich & intense history depicting remarkable continuity and has the unique distinction of having been India’s capital longer than any other city. The city has survived all the changes of time and fortune. It has frequently changed its form, its character and its name. It has seen the rise and fall of many civilizations and empires. From Indraprastha of Mahabharata to the present New Delhi, it has grown into a mega metropolis. Due to such a rich heritage, Delhi is the home of some of the greatest architectural marvels and a culture so unique and diverse. Delhi is the city of three World Heritage sites – Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb. All the monuments house thousands of anecdotes. One can either get inspired from the many stories, or weave one’s own by experiencing the city. Delhi is a great city to make the perfect backdrop to an eye and frame of a Camera. With so many exotic locales and settings seeped into history and culture, how can cinema not capture it? Delhi, is undoubtedly a cinematic delight. Different parts of the city give a different character to a film, from Rang de Basanti, Delhi 6, Aisha, to the more recent, Raanjhanaa, Fukrey and pk. Delhi has emerged as one of Bollywood’s favourite shooting destinations. Several known filmmakers have either shot for their projects or are scouting for locations in Delhi. In the past two years, due to improvement in the support system and nomination of Delhi Tourism as the nodal agency for facilitating film shootings in Delhi, Bollywood is looking towards Delhi like never before. The number of films shot in the city has substantially increased. Some of the recent films extensively shot in Delhi are pk, Raanjhanaa, Kick, Kill Dil, Tevar, Dolly ki Doli, Baby, & Tanu weds Manu Returns among others. Delhi apart from being a filmmaker’s delight also has availability of new talent, lower production cost, international connectivity, better infrastructure and more than 200 locations to shoot at. Delhi Tourism itself has a few properties which can be used as ideal location to shoot at. 3 Some of the scenic attractions are enumerated below: 1. India Gate and Raj path This Great War Memorial, situated along the ceremonial Raj Path Avenue (meaning King's Way) in New Delhi, India Gate is a memorial raised in honour of the Indian soldiers who died during the Afghan wars and World War I. This 42 meters tall monument was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the master designer of New Delhi. The green lawns at India Gate are a popular evening and holiday rendezvous for young and old alike. Central Delhi in general is known for its tree-lined, wide roads driving through which, is an experience in itself. A scene from the movie – Band, Bajaa, Baraat. A lot of movies like Fanaa, Rang De Basanti & Ranjhanaa among others have been shot with India Gate as a backdrop. 4 2. Connaught Place (Rajiv Chowk) The shopping complex was beautifully designed by Robert Russell in a shape of Horse-shoe style and surrounded by two circular roads; the double storey European style buildings have spaces and airy corridors. Connaught Place is one of the largest commercial areas in Delhi, India. C.P. is a heritage complex and a great place to go shopping along with a lot of restaurants for every taste and budget. It is one of the most popular hangout spots among the youth of the City. A scene from the movie – Aisha. Other popular movies like Vicky Donor, Rockstar, 2 States & pk have also been shot in Connaught Place. 5 3. Lodhi Gardens Lodhi Garden once called Lady Willingdon Park, was laid out in 1930. This beautiful park contains 15th and 16th century monuments made by Sayyids & Lodhi Sultans that are scattered among its well-kept lawns, flowers, shady trees and ponds. During the early morning and evening hours, the sprawling garden is a favorite spot for fitness freaks and those in search of calming solitude. A scene from the movie – Chak De India. Lodhi Garden has been beautifully captured as a backdrop in many movies. To name a few - Fanaa, Rockstar, pk have beautifully captured Lodhi Garden as a backdrop. 6 4. Humayun's Tomb Humayun's Tomb was built by the widow of Humayun, Hamida Bano Begum designed by a Persian architect named Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. The structure is the first matured example of Mughal architecture. Humayun’s Tomb has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Humayun’s Tomb has small octagonal chambers, diagonal corners, arched lobbies and symmetrical gardens. The meticulous and splendid architecture of the tomb makes it one of the most alluring sites to explore – a perfect backdrop for a dramatic scene. A scene from the movie – pk. A lot of movies like Kurbaan, Fanaa and the latest being Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Fitoor among others have Humayun’s Tomb as a backdrop. 7 5. Purana Qila The majestic fort of Purana Qila began its construction at the hands of Humayun in 1530 as the city of Dinpanah or ‘asylum of faith,’ only to be completed by Sher Shah Suri. The Purana Qila (Old Fort) is an excellent example of Mughal military architecture. Its three gates show a remarkable fusion of Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The lake at the Old Fort adds to its scenic beauty. A scene from the movie – Wazir starring Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar. A lot of movies like Fanaa, Jannat 2 and Tanu weds Manu Returns among others have Purana Qila as a backdrop. 8 8. Red Fort The Red Fort is Shahjahan’s gift to the city of Delhi. Emperor Shah Jahan laid the foundation of the city, Shahjahanabad and ordered Chief architects, Ustad Hamid and Ahmed and master builders to construct the citadel. In central arches, in the Central Hall are inscribed famous couplets of a 14th century poet and Sufi saint, Amir Khusrau in gold letters – “If there be a heaven on surface of this earth, it is this. It is this.” On every Independence Day the Flag of India is hoisted by the Prime Minister of India to address the nation from the rampart of the Red Fort. A scene from the movie – Bajrangi Bhaijaan. A lot of movies like Fanaa, Black & White and Chandni Chowk to China among others have Red Fort as a backdrop. 9 9. Chandni Chowk Chandni Chowk, a main marketplace in Delhi, keeps alive the city's living legacy of Shahjahanabad. Created by Shah Jahan, the builder of Taj Mahal, the old city, with the Red Fort as its focal point and Jama Masjid as the praying centre. Chandni Chowk remains Asia's largest wholesale market. With the most famous mosque of Delhi Jama Masjid in the vicinity, along with Sis Ganj Gurudwara, Jain Mandir and a lot of small temples, the place witnesses a genuine cultural harmony. It also has the mouth-watering Paranthewali Gali. A scene from the movie – Boss. A lot of movies like pk, Kick, Ahista Ahista among others have Red Fort as a backdrop. 10 10. Safdarjung's Tomb This is the last Mughal architecture & enclosed garden tomb in Delhi. It is constructed under the supervision of Bilal Muhammad Khan by Safdarjung’s son in 1754 AD. The garden as well as the layout is similar to that of Humayun’s Tomb. The tomb has several multi-chambered and spacious pavilions, called Moti Mahal, Badshah Pasand and Jungli Mahal. The tomb complex also has a madarsa, still operating today. A scene from the Hollywood movie – Jobs. A lot of movies like Fanaa and Kurbaan among others have Safdarjung Tomb as a backdrop. 11 11. Qutub Minar Constructed by Qutub’ud-din Aibak, Qutub Minar is the second tallest minaret in the world after the minaret of Mosque of Hasan at Cairo in Egypt. It is a tower of victory as well as attached to Quwwatul Islam Mosque for giving call to the people to come for prayer. The construction was completed by son-in-law Shamsuddin Iltutmish. Qutub Minar is among the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A scene from the movie – Zila Ghaziabad. A lot of movies like Jannat 2, Kick among others have Qutub Minar as a backdrop. 12 12. Tughlaqabad Tughlaqabad Fort stands on a high outcrop of rocks and was built to guard from the attack of Mughals. In order to enter the fortress, one has to walk a causeway which originally supported 27 arches. At the south end of the fort is an escape route leading out of the fort.

Australian federal and state governments offer Indian film producers financial incentives to film in Australia, and Australian cities now regularly supply Indian movies with backdrops of upmarket shopping malls, stylish apartments and exclusive restaurants. Yet in helping to project the lifestyle fantasies of India's new middle classes, Australian government agencies are supporting an Indian view of Australia. While this image may attract Indian tourists to Australia, it presumes Australia is culturally White and British, and as a result Australian agencies market an Australian cosmopolitanism defined not in terms of cultural diversity but in terms of the availability of global brands.

Hindu-Muslim Relationship in Bollywood in post 26/11: A Content Analysis of Movies (2008-2018) Maziar Mozaffari Falarti,1 Hamideh Molaei,2 Asra Karim3 1. Assistant Professor of South, East Asia and Oceania Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran (Corresponding author) ([email protected]) 2. Assistant Professor of South, East Asia and Oceania Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) 3. M. A. in Indian Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jan. 2, 2019 Revised: Feb. 28, 2019 Accepted: Ma r. 28, 2019) Abstract This study investigates the representations of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies from 2008 to 2018. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies.

  • Androcentrism in Indian Sports
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Androcentrism in Indian sports Bijit Das [email protected] Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Sociology Dibrugarh University Dibrugarh, Assam, India 786004 Abstract The personality of every individual concerning caste, creed, religion, gender in India depends on the structures of society. The society acts as a ladder in diffusing stereotypes from generation to generation which becomes a fundamental constructed ideal type for generalizing ideas on what is masculine or feminine. The gynocentric and androcentric division of labor in terms of work gives more potential for females in household works but not as the position of males. This paper is more concentrated on the biases of women in terms of sports and games which are male- dominated throughout the globe. The researcher looks at the growing stereotypes upon Indian sports as portrayed in various Indian cinemas. Content analysis is carried out on the movies Dangal and Chak de India to portray the prejudices shown by the Indian media. A total of five non-fictional sports movies are made in India in the name of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), Paan Singh Tomar(2012), MS Dhoni: An untold story(2016), Azhar(2016), Sachin: A billion dreams(26 May 2017) are on male sportsperson whereas only two movies are on women, namely Mary Kom (2014), Dangal(2017). This indicates that male preference is more than female in Indian media concerning any sports. The acquaintance of males in every sphere of life is being carried out from ancient to modern societies. This paper will widen the perspectives of not viewing society per media but to the independence and equity of both the sex in every sphere of life.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.
