In April 2005, the Huskers claimed their second consecutive national title since bowling was elevated to NCAA Championship status. Looking to make NCAA history during the 2005 season, the Huskers are on the right track for a run at another title. The Huskers captured their first NCAA title in 2004, the inaugural season of the sport’s NCAA status. The Huskers worked their way through the loser’s bracket to defeat Central Missouri State in the finals to win the championship. Nebraska made it two in a row with another season of dominance in 2004- 05. Finishing first in seven of their nine tournaments, the Huskers went on to win their second NCAA title in April of 2005. The Nebraska bowling team has certainly created a commitment to excellence. Under Coach Bill Straub and Assistant Coach Paul Klempa’s guidance, Husker women’s teams have won seven national titles in the past 14 years. The Nebraska women’s bowling program won IBC national championships in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The 2005-06 bowling team is hoping to add to the championship legacy Nebraska has established in women’s bowling. Although the Huskers lose three-time All-American Shannon Pluhowsky, Straub is confident Nebraska has the right ingredients for another outstanding season. “We lost one of the best bowlers of all time, without reference to gender. We can’t replace the best. However, we are getting a solid returning class and we believe we have the basis for still another successful season,” Straub said. “Each of these superb players wants to prove to themselves and the world of intercollegiate bowling that even without the great Shannon Pluhowsky, the Second-team All-American, Jamie Martin, captured her first individual title last season at the Husker bowling team will still be the best team.” Coca-Cola Invitational. She will be a key component in the Huskers’ quest for their third NCAA This season, Nebraska welcomes back first-team All-American Amanda title in 2005-06. Burgoyne, a junior from Newport, Minn. In 2004-05, Burgoyne led the Huskers with two individual tournament titles. In April, Burgoyne was named “Amanda’s greatest skill is being able to do her best when it counts the NCAA Tournament MVP with a career-high average of 251 during four games most,” Straub said. “She works tirelessly at maintaining her current level of in the qualifying rounds. Last summer, Burgoyne also advanced her individual development while striving to become even more proficient.” skills internationally while successfully representing her country on both the Burgoyne is joined by four veteran teammates. The Husker line-up Junior Team USA and the Adult Team USA. includes Jamie Martin, Karla Engh, Adrienne Miller and Lindsay Baker. From Custom to Code From Custom to Code A Sociological Interpretation of the Making of Association Football Dominik Döllinger Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Humanistiska teatern, Engelska parken, Uppsala, Tuesday, 7 September 2021 at 13:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Associate Professor Patrick McGovern (London School of Economics). Abstract Döllinger, D. 2021. From Custom to Code. A Sociological Interpretation of the Making of Association Football. 167 pp. Uppsala: Department of Sociology, Uppsala University. ISBN 978-91-506-2879-1. The present study is a sociological interpretation of the emergence of modern football between 1733 and 1864. It focuses on the decades leading up to the foundation of the Football Association in 1863 and observes how folk football gradually develops into a new form which expresses itself in written codes, clubs and associations. In order to uncover this transformation, I have collected and analyzed local and national newspaper reports about football playing which had been published between 1733 and 1864. I find that folk football customs, despite their great local variety, deserve a more thorough sociological interpretation, as they were highly emotional acts of collective self-affirmation and protest. At the same time, the data shows that folk and early association football were indeed distinct insofar as the latter explicitly opposed the evocation of passions, antagonistic tensions and collective effervescence which had been at the heart of the folk version. Keywords: historical sociology, football, custom, culture, community Dominik Döllinger, Department of Sociology, Box 624, Uppsala University, SE-75126 Uppsala, Sweden.

  • Destination of 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Transfers
DESTINATION OF 2019 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S BASKETBALL TRANSFERS January 2020 Summary of Findings Although the Division I Transfer Portal opened in October 2018, there was no substantial change in the number of transfers in Division I men’s basketball from 2018 to 2019. Consistent with the past four years of transfer data, about half of men’s basketball transfers remain in Division I, while a quarter transfer to Division II and a quarter transfer out of the NCAA (NAIA, NJCAA, etc.). Fewer than 1 in 10 are “up transfers” (transferring to a more prestigious program), while about 30% are “lateral transfers” and 60% are “down transfers.” This pattern has remained consistent over time. Of those men’s basketball transfers remaining in Division I, nearly one third are so-called “graduate transfers.” This percentage has remained relatively consistent over the past four years. Graduate transfers are more likely to “up transfer” than undergraduate transfers in men’s basketball. Identifying 2019 Transfers in Division I Men’s Basketball Transfers were identified by merging the 2019 Division I Basketball Transfers list from the Verbal Commits website (downloaded Sept. 15, 2019) with all Division I men’s basketball student-athletes listed in the 2018-19 Transfer Portal. List destination accuracy was determined primarily through: The “matriculated” institution listed in the student’s status field in the Transfer Portal. 2019-20 men’s basketball roster of destination institution and/or student-athlete bio. Secondary sources: • NJCAA National Letter of Intent Signee Database. • Official press releases from either/both institution(s). • Transfer student-athletes’ Twitter feed or other social media footprint (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).

It’s our sixth year of operation and it looks like our theme for the year will be growth. In March, the Pentagon hosted 59 postseason college basketball games. Among those were three national championships – the fi rst ever combined NCAA Division II men’s and women’s Elite Eight, as well as the NAIA Division II men’s championship. The NAIA then honored the Sanford Sports Complex with its annual Best NAIA Championship Venue Award. The award is a testament to the facility and our incredible sta that make it come to life. This spring ushered in several big announcements about new additions coming to the Complex. The Summit League announced the relocation of its headquarters to Sioux Falls, a more centralized location within the organization’s footprint. We are proud to welcome them to Sioux Falls. Will’s Training Table is undergoing an extensive remodel this year. When it reopens in February the destination restaurant and bar will have more than doubled in size.
