Stars wrap up third place in KCAC-SAC Championships

McPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University took four titles in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference-Sooner Athletic Conference men’s wrestling championships Saturday at the Ed Pyle Sports Complex. Oklahoma City’s Billy Sullivan, a freshman from Las Vegas, collected the tournament outstanding wrestler, while Jon McGowan, a junior from Hulbert, Okla., accumulated the most falls in the tournament. Sullivan reeled in the 125-pound championship. The Stars’ other champions were Drake Vannoy at 157 pounds, Connor Holman (165) and Easton Rendleman (197). Jaxen Gilmore at 141 and Chase Vincent in the 184-pound field became tournament runners-up. Those six OCU individuals secured berths in the NAIA Championships on March 5-6 in Park City, Kan. Tournament champions and runners-up advanced to the national tournament with four wild cards voted upon by the coaches and submitted to the NAIA. The full NAIA Championships field will be announced Feb. 23. OCU, ranked 17th in the NAIA, came in third place in the team standings with 133 points. No. 18-rated Ottawa (Kan.) captured the tournament crown, while Texas Wesleyan nabbed second place and the SAC title. Sullivan triumphed over Johnathan Ortegon from Wayland Baptist (Texas) 15-3 in a major decision for the 125-pound league title. Sullivan went 3-0 with two pins in the meet. Rendleman, a junior from Choctaw, Okla., earned his second consecutive conference crown with a 6-3 win over Ottawa’s Carson Savage. Rendleman reached the NAIA Championships and the SAC finals for the third year in a row. Vincent, a senior from Yukon, Okla., secured his fourth trip to the national tournament and conference final. Vincent fell in the title bout 4-2 to Cameron Young-Leggett from Ottawa. Holman, a junior from Choctaw, Okla., grabbed the 165-pound title 6-3 over Wayland Baptist’s Seth Dixon. Holman advanced to the NAIA meet and became all-SAC for the second time. Vannoy, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., blanked Texas Wesleyan’s Enis Ida 7-0 for the 157- pound crown. Gilmore, a junior from Yukon, Okla., fell in the 141-pound final 8-3 to La’Stot Pleasant from Texas Wesleyan. Gilmore boasts of his second NAIA Championships berth and all-conference accolade. McGowan seized his fourth fall of the weekend in 35 seconds against Oklahoma Wesleyan’s Chad Sakamoto to get third place at 149. McGowan picked up his third all-SAC nod. Stars who became honorable-mention all-conference performers were Israel Andres Villa, fourth at 197, and Cooper Mahaffey, fifth at 125. Villa sewed up his second all-SAC honor.

Stars roll past Southwestern Christian 92-79

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University cruised to a 92-79 win over Southwestern Christian on Saturday at the Pickens-Springer Gymnasium. Coleman sank 8 of 12 from the field and all seven of his free- throw attempts. Kori Guest, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., boasted of highs with 24 points and six 3-pointers while shooting 9-for-12 from the floor and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. Both played the full 40 minutes. Kealon Clayborne, a senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, tallied 18 points and five rebounds, while Romario Spence, a senior from Luton, England, notched his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City. The Stars piled up a season-best 92 points and shot a season-high 55 percent from the field (33-for-60). Oklahoma City downed 12 of 27 3-point tries to hit double digits in treys for the third time in 2020-21. OCU won for the first time on the road this season. OCU rolled in the second half, outscoring Southwestern Christian 59-46 to pull away from a 33-33 halftime deadlock. Guest sank a 3 to push the Stars’ advantage into double figures 48-37 at the 15:49 mark. Coleman capped a 7-0 run with a pair of free throws to give OCU its biggest lead of the day 83-63 with 4:57 remaining. The Stars are set to meet Southwestern Christian at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Arena.
