  • Countdown to Launch of France's First Urban Cable
International Edition – 14 November 2016 Countdown to launch of France’s first urban cable car On Saturday 19 November, Keolis will launch France’s first urban cable car in the city of Brest in north-west Brittany. The system features the vertical crossing of cabins – a world first – and will link the left bank station, situated on a hill above the naval base, to the right bank station located inside the Ateliers des Capucins. The new Capucins eco-district, structured around former French Navy workshops, will house shops and restaurants as well as cultural and leisure facilities. The cable car is operated automatically and the system is supervised by Keolis Brest teams at the Bibus network control room. The two, 60-passenger cabins provide breath-taking views of the harbour during the three- minute crossing over the river Penfeld. This new, economical and environmentally-friendly urban transport mode will be integrated into the city’s existing public transport network, and passengers can access the tram, bus and cable car with a single Bibus transport ticket. Transit Friendly Design Features INTRODUCTION North American municipal and regional planning authorities are pursuing urban growth management strategies that preserve or improve urban “livability”. In the Lower Mainland, concerns about air quality and traffic congestion are central themes in regional planning, such as the GVRD Creating Our Future program, and the Transport 2021 project. Growing communities throughout BC share similar concerns. These studies identify a larger role for public transit as a key strategy for achieving a reduction in the number of automobile trips and an improved urban environment. Achieving higher transit ridership is a challenge in an automobile oriented society, and transit agencies should not bear this responsibility alone. Public Transit in B.C. Public transit is provided in over 58 municipal areas in British Columbia, including conventional, paratransit and handyDART services. BC Transit is responsible for planning, funding, marketing, and implementation of these systems. In the regions of Victoria and Vancouver, BC Transit operates these services. In other areas of the province, BC Transit works in partnership with local governments and private contractors to provide transit service. Public transit is simply the movement of people in groups, generally in large vehicles operating on fixed routes and schedules. These services are available to the public at fares that vary from community to community. The conventional bus is the most common vehicle in use in larger urban areas. The emphasis here is on integrating conventional bus service with land use planning. 1 Transit and Land Use Planning Making the Transit Connection ... to Land Use In order to attract more transit customers, the strong influence of land use and urban design on travel behaviour needs to be recognized and utilized to the advantage of transit.

  • Trucking Industry Uses Election Spending and Lobbying Expenditures to Weaken Truck Safety Rules Through Backdoor Riders on Transportation Spending Bills
June 24, 2015 Trucking Industry Uses Election Spending and Lobbying Expenditures to Weaken Truck Safety Rules Through Backdoor Riders on Transportation Spending Bills Large truck crashes kill 4,000 thousand Americans every year, and injure nearly 100,000 more at an economic cost of $99 billion. With such a devastating toll of needless death and suffering, the United States urgently needs enhanced truck safety measures. But it’s not stronger truck safety that’s on the Congressional agenda. Shamefully, Congress is instead acting to weaken truck safety standards. If the trucking industry succeeds with its investment of $78 million in congressional lobbying and campaign money since 2012 as this report reveals, the public will be paying even more with their lives and their wallets. On June 9, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an appropriations rider that would roll back a series of truck safety rules; similar life-threatening provisions are now under consideration in the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, which will consider them at a committee markup Thursday, June 25. These measures are not being passed through the normal process. They are not being considered in the committees of jurisdiction; they are not being passed after or in response to committee investigation and oversight; they are not evidence-driven in any way. Instead, they are moving as policy riders – incorporated as extraneous matters into must-pass Transportation Department spending bills. There is only one way to understand this Congressional action: With their campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures, big freight companies have leveraged their financial power to win legislative objectives to increase their profits.

  • What Can Be Written About the Challenges Facing the U.S. Trucking
2008 TRUCKING PERSPECTIVES What can be written about the challenges facing the U.S. trucking industry that hasn’t already been chewed up and steamrolled over countless times? Rising fuel prices, green equipment mandates, shifting truckload (TL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) demands, mode competition, excessive capacity, and end-user demands have carriers checking their side-view mirrors for lost business, assets, and competitors discarded along the way. For an economy inherently tied to over-the-road commerce, these objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. Numerous failures, including Alvan Motor Freight and Jevic Transportation, have cast a pall over the trucking industry at large. But with time, distance, and perspective, carriers are managing these challenges and turning their attention to what lies ahead, chasing the tail lights of a sputtering economic engine that is showing signs of turning over. What hasn’t already terminally stalled truckers is making them leaner, greener, and better prepared for a return to normalcy. by Joseph O’Reilly September 2008 • Inbound Logistics Stateside shippers and consignees navigate a less FIGURE 1 Reported Increases in predictable and potentially ominous road.
