Hitting the tremolo bar on his first Fender Strat (he was a Gibson man) during a guitar solo, he was immediately introduced to the problem of string binding on traditional guitar nuts. “I went to do my first ‘wang’ and went totally out of tune” Dave says. “I couldn’t use the guitar for stage work at all”. Spurred by the resurgence in popularity of tremolo guitars, the need for pencil lead in the nut slots, and his own frustration, Dave began experimenting with a variety of composite guitar nuts designed to eliminate string binding before engineering the world’s first self-lubricating nut, a formula that is 500% slipperier than graphite. More than twenty years later Graph Tech Guitar Labs has become an institution, producing some of the industry’s most innovative and reliable nuts, saddles, bridge pins, bridges and pickup systems. Through patented methods and proprietary techniques, Graph Tech has designed specific tone and performance enhancements that were once impossible to achieve. The result is an outstanding reputation for quality and rapid acceptance by guitar players. Dave’s commitment has never wavered: “I envisioned a people - and service-oriented company that can turn on a dime and can respond to our customers’ needs.” The successful introduction of totally new concepts (as opposed to “me too” products) into the guitar market have led to Graph Tech’s booming success. Graph Tech products are factory installed world wide on Carvin®, Furch®, Gibson®, Godin®, Larrivee®, Martin®, Peavey®, Raimundo®, Schecter®, Taylor®, Tom Anderson®, Warmoth®, Yamaha® Custom, and many others. What is the reaction from the players around the world? Week after week, customers write us unsolicited letters and e-mails letting us know that is the first product that they’ve ever bought that actually does what is says it would do (imagine that!). 3 “The difference that TUSQ makes is astounding. More low end, more high end, more sustain, more clarity, more punch.” - Mitch Malloy - RCA Recording Artist • Increases harmonic content up to 200% • Rich tone with a crystal clear bell-like high end and BIG open lows • Superior string vibration transfer 4 TUSQ delivers the optimum frequencies from the strings to the guitar top, producing a richer and fuller tone. TUSQ nuts are precision slotted TUSQ is highly resonant TUSQ is consistent from piece to piece without any hollow or dead spots TUSQ is environmentally friendly TUSQ files and sands easily for the perfect fit TUSQ is factory installed on Cole Clark®, Carvin®, Gibson®, Martin®, Schecter®, Taylor® & many more. Guitar makers and players agree……acoustic guitars come alive with TUSQ man-made ivory. TUSQ is simply more efficient at transferring vibration to your guitar top, resulting in big open lows and clear bell like highs. Bone and Ivory nuts and saddles have one inherent problem - they’re made from organic material, and therefore have inconsistent soft or dead spots because of their natural grain. TUSQ nuts, saddles and bridge pins are precision engineered under high pressure and heat, specifically to govern which frequencies are transferred to your guitar top (tone), and which frequencies remain in the strings (sustain). TUSQ is consistent from piece to piece, and within each piece, to offer you harmonically rich tones without the problems associated with natural materials. How does it sound? TUSQ delivers a rich tone, crystal clear bell-like high end with big open lows and a significant increase in harmonic content and harmonic sustain. Increased harmonics equals more richness and character in your tone. Its the difference between a 4 piece choir and a 12 piece choir singing every time you play a note. 5 For a full product listing: visit graphtech.com, call 604-940-5353 or email [email protected] “I just installed a set of your TUSQ bridge pins in place of the plastic originals. 22564VIC Certificate IV in Musical Instrument Making and Repair Course Information Brochure Description of Course Activities/tasks Students begin by completing an extensive OH&S program, incorporating theory and workshop induction. Over the year, students learn to make a bolt-on electric guitar, a dreadnaught style acoustic guitar and design a custom instrument of their choice. The course covers hand carving and the use and maintenance of hand and power tools necessary for construction, and gives vital hands-on experience. As part of the course, students learn to complete perspective drawings, isometric and concept drawings and use these skills to develop a product range. They also learn to generate computer aided drawings for their instruments and inlays, and create custom templates and jigs. The course also covers an introduction to computer controlled cutting and milling machines and laser cutters. Students are introduced to string instrument setup from guitar to ukulele to traveller mandolin. Students also learn how to improve instrument function, the physics of sound, as well as the development of a business plan. Industry visits are a part of the course and all students must complete a work placement at our industry partners as part of the program. This is organised by NCAT. Assessment Successful completion of the course requires 95% attendance. Students will be required to complete two instruments and all set work as well as the work placement. The assessment of overall competence at this certificate level will be undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using all of these criteria. All training resources will be provided upon payment and enrolment.

Nature-facing elements, including resource scarcity and environmental regulation, have seldom featured in GPN analysis. So, too, GPN analysis emphasizes spatial relations between network actors over temporal change. We extend GPN theorization through a temporal analysis of industrial change, connecting manufacturing to upstream resource materialities and shifting regulation, and to downstream consumers increasingly concerned with provenance and material stewardship. To illustrate, we document a resource-sensitive GPN-acoustic guitar manufacturing-where scarcity of select raw materials (tonewoods) with material qualities of resonance, strength, and beauty, as well as tighter regulation, has spawned shifting economic geographies of new actors who influence the whole GPN.

  • Design of a Composite Guitar Master Thesis Report Max Roest
Technische Universiteit Delft Design of a composite guitar Master Thesis Report Max Roest Design of a composite guitar Master Thesis Report by Max Roest Student number: 4084217 Hand-in date: August 17, 2016 Supervisor: dr. ir. O.K. Bergsma, TU Delft Summary Today’s acoustic guitars are getting increasingly expensive due to the worsening availability of the highest quality woods. Composites show great promise in replacing wood in acoustic guitars as they are lightweight, are not as sensitive to environmental effects and are much stronger. Current composite guitars however do not sound as good as their wooden counterparts. Therefore this thesis research has been set-up to create a composite material that can match wood acoustically and therefore have all the benefits in terms of environ- mental sensitivity and strength while not compromising the sound quality of the instrument. A new com- posite is developed and extensively tested. This composite consists of a carbon fibre reinforced polyurethane foam and has a comparable acoustic response to high quality spruce used for guitar soundboards. With this new composite a complete composite guitar is designed, manufactured and tested. The psychoacoustic anal- ysis performed showed that the new composite guitar is considerably more wood like in its sound compared to current carbon fibre acoustic guitars. ii Preface Max Roest Delft, July 2016 It is over 20 years ago that I received my first guitar. A few months later, at the age of 4, I had my first guitar lessons. Now at the age of 24, it is hard to remember any period in my life where guitars and music have not played a major role in my life.
