Motivation My research involves measuring the concentration of in situ 10Be in glacio- fluvial sediments from Greenland and an adjacent ocean sediment core spanning the past 6 Myr (Figure 1). Knowing the concentration of 10Be in modern continental sediment samples will help me interpret the down core record, which may provide a new way of estimating timing of Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) inception and inferring past ice extent and erosivity. Linking this ice sheet variability with records of past climate change may help to determine thresholds for ice loss and regrowth, which is an important step towards predicting how the ice sheet might respond to future climate change. 1.2. Project Goals The first component of my research is to measure the 10Be concentration in sediment sourced from different places on the Greenlandic landscape. Ice shields rock from cosmic rays, so I expect sediments sourced from glaciated versus ice-free terrain will contain different amounts of 10Be and that sediments from different source areas will mix as they are transported through the landscape. -

In July 2017 My Wife and I Visited Qassiarsuk, on the Southern Tip of Greenland
In July 2017 my wife and I visited Qassiarsuk, on the southern tip of Greenland. This was part of a trip from the UK up the west coast of Greenland, which included visits to the Faroe Islands and Iceland en route. We had visited some settlements on Greenland’s east and south coasts as part of a trip in 2015, but wanted to get a little further north this time. Narsarsuaq is an Inuit settlement with little more than an airport and a small museum/shop, located by the Tunulliarfik Fjord on the southern tip of Greenand. Across the Narsarsuaq River from Narsarsuaq itself, on the other side of the Tunulliarfik Fjord, is Qassiarsuk - an even smaller settlement. This was of more interest to us as it is believed to be here that Erik the Red and his wife Thjodhild had a small farm, named Brattahlid. Ruins of several buildings are still visible, and a couple have been reconstructed and furnished as they would have been in Norse times. The settlement is overlooked by a 3m tall bronze statue of Leif Eriksson (Erik the Red’s son), designed by August Werner. It is cast from the same mould of the statue of him at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland and Labrador, now believed to have been one of the first landing points of Leif Eriksson in North America in 1000. The original mould was made in 1962 for the Seattle World Fair. Leif Eriksson’s statue overlooking Qassiarsuk… … and at L’Anse aux Meadows. The Norse settlement of Brattahlíð was established in around the year 982, and there was a Viking presence here from then until the mid-fifteenth century. -

Abstract In order to investigate how Inuit Greenlanders in western Greenland are experiencing, responding to, and thinking about recent allegedly human-induced climate change, this dissertation ethnographically examines the lives of Greenlanders as well as Norse and Danes in the course of past historical natural climate cycles. My emphasis is on human endeavours to cultivate a future in the face of difficulties caused by climatic and environmental transformation. I recognize locals’ initiatives to carve out a future in the promotion of sheep farming and tree-planting in southern Greenland and in adaptation processes of northern Greenlandic hunters to the ever-shifting environment. -
Vesterbro / Kongens Enghave
VESTERBRO / KONGENS ENGHAVE Vesterbro var oprindelig navnet på den brolagte landevej, som førte ud ad hovedsta- den vestpå gennem Vesterport, der lå, hvor Rådhuspladsen ligger i dag. Fulgte man denne landevej, kom man ud i et landligt område med marker og meget lidt bebyg- gelse. Sådan så Vesterbro ud, indtil Københavns voldanlæg blev nedlagt i 1867, og byen fik vokseværk og bredte sig. Ligesom på Nørrebro blev etagebyggeriet opført for at huse de mange tilflyttende arbejdere i takt med industrialiseringen. Husene lå tæt og trangt med slum og fat- tigdom i overflod. Vesterbro blev også hurtigt kendt som et forlystelseskvarter med kroer, prostitution og andre fristelser, hvilket bidrog til områdets blakkede ry. Vesterbro var i mange år centrum for handel med kvæg og kød. Den Brune Kødby blev opført i 1878, og kvægtorvet strakte sig helt ned til den daværende Gasværkshavn (i dag Kalvebod Brygge) og rummede kostalde, fårefolde og salgshaller. Området blev renoveret omkring århundredeskiftet og fik en ny salgshal, Øksnehallen, og nye kalve- og fårefolde. Både Den Brune Kødby og Den Hvide Kødby (sidstnævnte opført i 1931-1934) rummer i dag en blanding af restauranter, natklubber og gallerier og blev i 2007 udpeget som nationalt industriminde af Kulturarvsstyrelsen. Med DGI-byen fra 1999 har det indre Vesterbro desuden fået et stort idrætscenter med mange alsidige tilbud. I 1960’erne blev Vesterbro befolket af indvandrere fra Pakistan og Tyrkiet, som den dag i dag påvirker bydelen med deres mange etniske butikker, indvandrerklubber og andre multietniske indslag. I 1990’erne påbegyndte Københavns Kommune en omfattende byfornyelse af området. Overalt på det indre Vesterbro har nyrenoverede ejerlejligheder skruet ejendomspriserne op i nye højder og tiltrukket et nyt publikum. -
