The VfGH ruled that the provisions in the Austrian Gaming Act meet the criteria for the legitimacy of the restriction on the freedom of services and that the Austrian Gaming Act is thus in compliance with EU law. The VfGH justified its ruling as follows:

• Since it first came into force, the Austrian Gaming Act has always contained numerous provisions to protect players, prevent gambling addiction and reduce crimi- nal activities in conjunction with gambling. • The statutory provisions are implemented in a coher- ent and systematic manner, in particular through the controls implemented by the license holders, the mea- sures to combat illegal gambling, the decision to link gaming machines and video lottery terminals to the Federal Computer Center (Bundesrechenzentrum) and the establishment of the Responsible Gaming Depart- ment in the Federal Ministry of Finance. • As a consequence of the statutory and official pro- visions, responsible gaming measures were imple- mented, and there has been no increased incidence of gambling addiction since 2009. • Even if individual advertising or marketing measures might, if taken in isolation, awaken or strengthen the desire to gamble, what matters is that these advertis- ing and marketing activities as a whole do not lead to an increase in gambling; concrete advertising or mar- keting activities by individual license holders should not be viewed in isolation in this context.

Also worth mentioning is the EU Directive 2015/849 on the prevention of the use of the financial system for

Thanks to our highly trained croupiers, each and every one of our guests can simply relax and enjoy the fun – and, of course, the experience.

A visit to one of our casinos is also a great culinary and cultural experience. Each of them is both a cultural meet- ing place and host to a broad range of social and cultural events – from literary readings, art exhibitions, cabaret shows and concerts to gala events, balls and festivals. And with first-class cuisine to round it all off, the result is a real all-round experience – from Baden to Bregenz.

Over the course of our almost 50-year history, we have welcomed over 90 million guests to our casinos. Indeed, our 90-millionth guest checked in to Casino Baden in the reporting year – on 21 September 2016 to be precise – where she was greeted with our warmest congratulations! Our eleven other casinos naturally also joined in the cele- brations along with our Director General Karl Stoss.

The fact that our casinos are so successful lies among other things in their individuality. Each casino exudes its own special charm and blends in harmoniously with its host region and setting. Our casinos can be found in the majestic ambience of a historical city Palais, surrounded by mountains or lakes, in perfect downtown locations and even in a baroque palace.

253 people each won 100,000 euros or more with an Austrian Lotteries lottery product in 2016 and can thus be classed as “big winners”. Of these, 46 took home a jackpot in excess of 1 million euros. The vast majority of the new Lotto millionaires hit the jackpot on the Lotto “6 aus 45” national lottery product, including the year’s biggest winner. Since all five-time rollover jackpots were shared by more than one player, the biggest winner in 2016 was a customer from Styria, who was the only person to pick all six numbers correctly in the four-time rollover jackpot on 28 September, and thus won around 6.32 million euros.

1.4 billion euros for sport

Sports sponsorship is a social mandate that Austrian Lotteries has proudly embraced since 1986. Over the past 30 years, the company has paid a total of almost 1.4 billion euros into the Besondere Bundes-Sport- förderung (“Austrian Special Federal Sports Fund”). Through the sports funding provisions established in the Austrian Gaming Act, Austrian Lotteries makes a crucial contribution to the financing of sports in Austria. Amateur sports, which play a very important role in society, profit in particular from this solidarity model.

The win2day advertising campaign

The communication concept behind the win2day TV adverts is centered on the core message “Gaming on win2day: relax and enjoy the fun”. 46 tipp3 – Sports Betting

The European Football Championship and inten- sified cooperation with the Austrian tobacconist sector as primary sales partner formed the focus of communication and marketing activities at tipp3 in 2016. The tipp3 web presence underwent a relaunch, the development of an enhanced version for mobile devices was started and the roll-out of the digital tippBox was continued – all with extremely gratifying effects on revenues.

Österreichische Sportwetten GmbH was founded in April 2000, with its first bet placed just over a year later on 24 August 2001. Since then, the company has gone on to become the leading sports betting provider in Austria. In the meantime, some 6.3 million tipp3 bets are placed on average each year. That corresponds to a total of 191.6 million bets and 95.9 million betting slips since the company was founded.

Health in the workplace > Casinos Austria places great value on having excellently trained staff.

The health of a company’s workforce is not something that can be left to chance. In cooperation with our company physician, we offer a broad range of health measures, including company-internal sports activities (spinal gymnastics, Pilates, yoga) and external sports courses. Training to prepare interested members of staff for participation in running and walking events was also provided in 2016 in cooperation with the team at our Innovation Hub. This networking across divisions and departments not only promotes staff health, it also encourages collaboration and cooperation across the group. A total of 123 members of staff subsequently ran together in the Vienna Business Run on 8 September 2016.

Group-wide golf tournaments, self-defense courses, walking biathlons and similar events are also organized by some of the casinos themselves. They offer, among other things, fun and physical activity with colleagues outside of daily work or a means of relaxation at the end of meetings.

In 2016, Casinos Austria employed a total of 4,233 staff worldwide. Of these, 1,808 (annual average full-time equivalent) were employed in our casinos in Austria (including in our headquarters in Vienna and in our Cuisino, CAST, CCB and CALL subsidiaries).
