oving ahead to 1993, our club was going through some new and interesting Mchanges. The new president, Sherry Panaccione tried to introduce a few new things to do to increase participation and open up new interests to encourage the members. One of the new ideas was an event called “Thunder Tech” (see p13). Every year there is a super large, well-attended, tech session out west that many of our members had attended over the years, so Sherry decided, “We can do that,” and she did. Looking at the lineup of sponsors, activities, and guest speakers, it turned out to be a fabulous event. It did continue for a few years after this, but somehow was put on the back burner and died out. (Too bad!!) Another try for something new was when she rented a large bus and planned a trip to the , and secured a slot in Turn one for the weekend. What a party that turned out to be, and everyone had a great time. Then there was the Swap Meet that was also very well attended. For the bizarre of events that really turned out to be a blast, was the “CAR-B-Q,” where all attendees selected a menu from a predetermined list, brought all the items to a pre- trip meeting, made up the dish and wrapped it in foil. The dinner special was then placed strategically on the motor of the owners’ car, location determined by the type and year of their vehicle, then we all caravanned to a large park where we had shelters reserved. Upon arrival, after taking the “long and winding road” to get there to make sure the meal was properly cooked, everything was put out for a “taste and try” banquet. Sounded weird in the beginning but really it was a lot of fun and a great event. Don’t be afraid to try something different with the club, you never know. n

o, what can we do when we are not Sout and about creating rallies, thanks to COVID-19? Remembering a few rally memories always works! A long time ago in a region far, far away…. (Pacific Northwest Region actually), Jeanne and I joined PCA and quickly got involved with rallying. In our first rally we came in 4th. Not too bad, and it really excited us. We had great rally masters in those days, Don and Ruth. But there were times when we didn’t do so well either. On one rally we were unlucky enough to be pulled over by a Washington State Trooper. SEP/OCT 2020 PORSCHE PROFILE 25 The Trials and Tribulations on the Road to Restoring a 911 FINDING

INSPIRATION By Jeremy Swiger his past weekend in a parking lot Ton one of the local Army posts, I completed the removal, repair, and reinstallation of the cylinder head on a cheap Volvo that I bought from a friend. Under normal circumstances, I would have done this with the aid of a lift at the auto shop on another local Army Post, but the shop closed its doors last year and has yet to reopen...metaphorically to how the world shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, life goes on and it’s these clandestine repair projects such as the above mentioned Volvo, diagnosing a problem with the Boxster at home or borrowing a friend’s Sitting in the 911. garage to perform regular maintenance on the 991 that keep me entertained and leave me with a good sense of accomplishment. So what’s the point? Between working on other projects, kicking tires with friends (both here in Germany and online back in the States), and watching countless hours of car- related YouTube videos, I am (re)finding inspiration to return to a long-term long- hood project which is quite literally “shelved” in a warehouse in Tampa. In 2012, my wife mentioned that her boss had an old 911 he wanted to sell and asked if I was interested. Silly question! My wife’s boss, Bob (not his real name), had bought the car as a father-son project which, due to time constraints and other Clandestine commitments, had stalled. He wanted Volvo repair. to part with the car and was really just

I had a handful of receipts I emailed this second person and lo and which were from the early ’70s. showing that the car had come to the St. behold, I found an owner! Transferring the title, the first order of business, quickly became an ordeal. The car had been sold through two or three owners before me and none had bothered with the transfer. So while I had a legitimate title, signed by “the seller,” it was dated from 1987 and not in any current Florida DMV database. The clerk in the tag office kindly asked me if I could come back with the seller to verify his identity and match his signature with the one on the title. Hmm! I responded, “No ma’am, that’s not possible.” She said, “Why not sir?” as the deputy sheriff on duty stepped closer to us. “Well, uh, er, it’s just not.” I don’t remember exactly what happened after this, other than my leaving the office quickly. As part of solving this problem, I started reconstructing the car’s previous 25-year history, using the records and photos I had been given. With the help of Google, I tried locating and contacting previous 911 in the monthly garage rental. owners to hear their stories of owning the

I now had a direct connection to the car’s history from the distant past. He recalled that someone before him had painted the car a shade of pearl white (that only the owner of a 1990 LS400 could love) but that it had been sepia brown originally (check!). He also recalled tearing down the original 2.4l engine to rebuild it as a 3.0l but ran into issues with his engine builder and ended up selling the car and all of the pieces to a shop in Delray Beach. I have since contacted that shop in hopes of finding at least the original engine case but the trail ran cold. Meanwhile, armed with the confidence of having found the person who signed the title, I was ready to approach the DMV again. However, it wasn’t needed and my concern over transferring the title turned out to be unfounded. A simple phone call to Tallahassee resulted in a database update and resolved the problem in minutes. I returned to a different tag agency and re-titled the car in my name with no further issues. At this point, I embarked on restoring the car. I gathered all of the boxes of parts and towed the rolling chassis to our workshop in Tampa. I started purchasing some of the missing pieces needed to put the car back together and stripped down what few parts were already on the chassis in preparation for bodywork and paint. On the surface, the car looked very solid, original metal except for a Working on the 911. newly installed front suspension pan and gas tank support and no rust.

Peeling back the layers always tells a story, though. The new pan looked a little crooked to me and I discovered that the left front corner of the car had taken a hit sometime in the past. The repair consisted Clandestine of little 2”x3” pieces of steel, some brazing, Volvo repair. fiberglass, lots of putty, all lovingly put together with the nearest big hammer. Instead of properly repairing this corner first, someone had simply welded in the new panels, most likely wielding another big hammer to get it to fit. This had to be addressed, so I cut the panel back out and went on a search for a body shop to straighten everything back up. This is where the story stops. Delays at the body shop and our subsequent move to Germany have left the old 911 again frozen in time. While I will still need help with the bodywork (as this is not a skill set I have developed), I look forward to the mechanical work required to make the car run, drive, and roadworthy again. I think I’ve gotten good practice during our time here in Germany, particularly over the past year as the projects have gotten larger (front suspension and steering rack on the Boxster in addition to the above mentioned Volvo) and the “workshop” any space I can find. Someday, I may even drive the old 911 to a Suncoast PCA event. That is, if a shinier object doesn’t come along first to take its place... n

SEP/OCT 2020 PORSCHE PROFILE 37 Fort De Soto Picnic By Ed Rossiter. Photos by Kathy Rossiter. Rain by Isaias.

n August 2, 2020, the Porsche Club OPicnic Gathering at Fort De Soto was the first social event held since the beginning of COVID 19. The eye of Isaias was hovering over the east coast of Florida and our Gulf Coast had predictions of rain and possibly strong storms. Thanks to Denise Remus, we rented 2 shelters to protect us from potential weather issues. With confirmations and a wait list, we had a total of 58 sign up, and an actual attendance of 38 braved the weather and COVID. The day started with partly sunny to all-sunny skies and nice gulf breezes which gave way to rain, thunder and lightning later in the day. Each guest brought their own food and drinks. Some hiked the park, enjoyed the beach, while others simply enjoyed the company and the shade of the picnic shelter. “Cornhole” brought out competitiveness of some of our group until being rudely interrupted by the rain. Those present diligently followed the COVID 19 rules of safety, with masks, social distancing, sanitizer usage, and even parking our cars every other space. It was enjoyed by all attending, with recommendations for future events of the same type. COVID 19 has made the large group gathering as we have been so accustomed to over many years virtually impossible. It appears this can be our short-term solution to allowing us to get together in a relatively large group setting and still protect each other from virus. At the event we attempted to get opinions and comments from our guests as to what they thought of the event, what and where we should have future events, and what we should keep, and what we should change. It was suggested that we should plan another picnic soon. Places of interest included Fort Hamer, Rye Preserve, Neal Preserve, and Picnic Island. If you have suggestions regarding these places, or others, please let us know as we begin to put together another picnic for early fall. Our Porsche Club has a long history of social gatherings, rallies, and tours. In the current environment, with concerns about the COVID virus, we are attempting to find unique ways of getting our members

38 PORSCHE PROFILE SEP/OCT 2020 and their cars together. We have to think in different ways, going to different places, and ultimately doing different things than we are not accustomed to doing. This picnic was just that. We believe we have found something we can do together that meets most of our wants and needs. As we have said earlier, we are in the process of putting together the next opportunity to get together. We will likely be limited to 50 total participants, and we may have to sacrifice some comforts and conveniences, but we will be getting ourselves back to having events on a frequent basis. So, watch your emails, social media postings, Profile’s Schedule of Events, the “Upcoming Events” listings on our website, and Club Registration for upcoming events. And, please contact us at Social@suncoastpca. org with ideas and suggestions for any future events. n

The second is a 9”X14” footprint allowing it to easily fit in the front boot, or by using the jump seats, folded up or down. The jump seat location requires tethering, and if fully packed with ice, lunch, and beverages, tethering it on the seat may be preferable, simply due to the weight.

adly, Frank Ertl passed away on SAugust 5, 2020, at 51 years of age. So many people from PCA knew Frank, but I want to give you all a little snapshot into his life. Frank was the youngest of five children. We all grew up in Southern New Jersey. He played football in high school and was a very good player. He attended Penn State University where he earned a degree in Computer Science and worked as a computer programmer. Frank was passionate about Porsche cars and the people in PCA. He reached solo driver status at Sebring in October 2019. He was never able to realize his dream of driving solo because the track dates he was able to fit into his schedule were canceled due to COVID-19. Many thanks to the club president, Denise Remus, his instructors Steve Danielson, Ofilio Morales, Larry Mendez, Wayne Kehm, Don Mattran, Terry Miller, and Jim Powers, just to name a few and the many friends he made as a member of PCA for a wonderful experience. He spoke so highly of all of you. He was a smart, amazing guy who will be greatly missed by so many. Brother, start your engine… n
