In the last two decades a new field of inquiry, cognitive science, has sprung up at the boundaries of cognitive psychology, computer science, linguistics, and philosophy. Borrowing most heavily from the subdisciplines of cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence, this class will focus on the ways in which cognitive science uses a range of methodologies to develop models and explanations of cognitive processes. The objectives of this course are twofold: 1) introduce students to the principles of cognitive science and the theories that have been developed in this field; 2) apply these principles and theories to issues of learning and understanding that are important to the fields represented by the concentrations in the School of Education and Social Policy. Specifically, we will discuss learning in school, community, family, and clinical settings. Students will be encouraged to draw from their own personal experience using the methodologies studied in the course. PREREQUISITES: None EVALUATION: Several short papers.
