3 Amazônia: a busca do eldorado A origem da lenda do eldorado é indígena. Os viajantes europeus a interpretaram livremente e passaram a acreditar que havia um local na Amazônia onde o ouro era farto. Segundo a lenda, no coração da floresta amazônica reluzia uma cidade com prédios e telhados dourados, habitada pelos índios Manoa, que tomavam banho de ouro em pó às margens do lago Parima, ou lago Douro. Essas lendas só serviram para alimentar a sanha dos viajantes e ceifar muitas vidas, inclusive dos indígenas, caçados pela floresta para servirem de carregadores e remadores, na busca do eldorado. Hoje, sabemos que o eldorado era uma metáfora que representava toda a riqueza e diversidade da Amazônia, pois, no século XVI, a região também era conhecida como “terra da canela”. Acreditavam os viajantes, obviamente com objetivos mercantilistas, que especiarias e drogas apreciadas na Europa seriam facilmente recolhidas na floresta. De fato, a canela e as drogas eram abundantes, porém esparsas, floresta adentro. Certamente, os viajantes achavam que iriam encontrá-las agrupadas ou próximas às margens do grande rio. Daí a corrida pela conquista do território, o eldorado das especiarias. A curiosidade em relação a outros lugares e povos sempre impulsionou o homem em busca de sensações que são despertadas diante de uma natureza desconhecida. A literatura nos fornece exemplos de várias narrativas que alimentaram essa busca ao desconhecido e à aventura. Um dos mais famosos narradores foi Homero, cujo nome associamos à narrativa épica Odisséia que é um relato sobre os dez anos de aventuras experimentadas por Ulisses, herói legendário da Grécia antiga, no esforço de retomar a Ítaca após a guerra de Troia. -

Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

NR1103_02 qxd 11/15/07 6:10 PM Page 4 Race and Redemption Racial and Ethnic Evolution in Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy Peter Staudenmaier ABSTRACT: With its origins in modern Theosophy, Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy is built around a racial view of human nature arranged in a hierarchical framework. This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates the central role of a racially configured conception of evolution within Anthroposophy past and present. -

Winter/Spring THE CEA FORUM 2015 Cross-Examining Bigotry: Using Toulmin’s Argument Model and Huckin’s CDA to Interrogate Overt and Covert Racist Arguments Nancy Effinger Wilson Texas State University “Why is it that a Black person can call me ‘cracker,’ but I can’t call him the ‘N-word?’” my composition student wanted to know. He had come by my office following our second class discussion of Coming of Age in Mississippi, Anne Moody’s 1968 autobiography in which she traces her life from her childhood in segregated Mississippi through her time as an activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Taken aback by such a question, the first words I uttered were, “why in the world would you want to call someone that?” and my second, “The racism you have a problem with in the book is against Whites?” I then realized that rather than feeling a uniting compassion for Moody as a person struggling against systemic racism, Travis had become defensive, perceiving Moody’s condemnation of “crackers” as a condemnation of all White people. Thus, despite my and Moody’s effort to decenter whiteness, this White, male student had found a way to center it again. Travis’ parting words to me that day were “When am I going to be a protected minority?” After this experience, I considered abandoning my social justice agenda. After all, I am supposed to be teaching students how to write, not how to be more humane and open-minded individuals. Perhaps it was time to take Stanley Fish’s advice and “save the world on my own time.” However, Travis’ comments were not only immoral, they were illogical, and logic is a 55 www.cea-web.org Winter/Spring THE CEA FORUM 2015 writing teacher’s business. -

The allusion of Ru, Vi, and Flo to the flowers adorning Ophelia (described in Hamlet Act IV Scenes v and vii) is probably more than a coincidence, as an early version of the play held in the Beckett Collection at Reading University Library suggests that Beckett originally called the characters Viola, Rose, and Poppy. 2. In Kane’s slightly earlier plays – Blasted (showcased in 1993), Phaedra’s Love (produced in 1996), and Cleansed (produced in April 1998) – they are given names. The characters in Crave (produced in August 1998) are referred to only by letters (C, M, B, A); and in the posthumously produced 4.48 Psychosis (2000), there are no character names. The ‘I’ that speaks throughout 4.48 Psy- chosis is singular but split: three performers speak the ‘I’, arguably reflecting a triad voiced by the ‘I’ itself: ‘Victim/ Perpetrator/ Bystander’ (Kane, 2001, p. 231). 3. These insights derive in part from a response from Vogel by email to my question about the name ‘Anna’. 4. Prefiguring Lehmann, Bonnie Marranca states, in her introduction to the three-text collection The Theatre of Images (a work each by Robert Wilson, Lee Breuer, and Richard Foreman), that ‘value came to be increasingly placed on performance with the result that the new theatre never became a literary theatre, but one dominated by images – visual and aural. In a town where justice doesn't prevail, the desperate want vengeance and ruthless murderers find themselves with vigilantes on their heels. Their paths cross in Sin City’s famous Kadie's Club Pecos. The film opens with fan-favorite “Just Another Saturday Night,” when Marv (Mickey Rourke) finds himself in the center of carnage as he tries to remember the preceding events. “The Long, Bad Night” tells the tale of Johnny, a cocky young gambler (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) taking his chances with the biggest villain in Sin City, Senator Roark (Powers Boothe). The central story, Miller’s acclaimed "A Dame To Kill For," features Dwight McCarthy (Josh Brolin) in his final confrontation with the woman of his dreams and nightmares, Ava Lord (Eva Green). “Nancy’s Last Dance" follows Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) in the wake of John Hartigan’s (Bruce Willis) selfless suicide. Driven insane by grief and rage, she will stop at nothing to get revenge. 2 RETURNING TO SIN CITY When FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY opened in April 2005, the film was a critical and global box office success. ABSTRACT This thesis project will argue that the participation of indigenous Mexicans in the Revolution of 1910 and the EZLN uprising of 1994 forced José Vasconcelos, Leopoldo Zea, and Enrique Dussel to reflect on the legacies of Mexico’s colonial past in order to propose how such peoples would form a part of modern Mexican society and identity. Vasconcelos proposed the idea of the cosmic race to encourage indigenous assimilation. Although Zea was a decolonial thinker, he too encouraged indigenous assimilation.
