4 | BCE MAGAZINE Message from THE HULETT DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

Wow! I can’t believe how the year has simply flown by and that we have already reached our final edition of the year. The festive season is upon us and soon we will be welcoming loads of visitors to our area; all reminding us of just how alluring our ‘home’ is. Having just returned from India, I am made acutely aware each day of just how blessed we are to live and work where we do, when there are so many in need, all over the world.

Over the course of this last year, we have hosted some wonderful events at Brettenwood, welcoming family and friends into our Estate – it’s always so wonderful to see our residents’ incredible sense of community on such occasions. Thank you for being a part of some great memories. We look forward to making even more of them as the new year unfolds.

We celebrated the 1- year anniversary of our move to our new offices, with a spectacular luncheon this last October. A big thank you to Cindy Rynhoud from Love Laugh for her amazing floral contribution and to Jackie Cameron for supplying the recipes. I must say they are simply the perfect dishes for holiday entertaining with friends and family this festive season. And so easy too! You will find them on page 11, so give them a try, you won’t regret it.

At our luncheon, we drank a toast to my dad who would be so proud of his team and the legacy he has left behind. After all, without his vision and passion for this Estate, none of us would be here today. It’s been 18 months since he passed and what a year and a half it has been!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Chairman of the Homeowners’ Association, Sally Ensor-Smith. Sally has been a director of BHOA for many years and with her passionate drive and vision, the future of the Homeowners’ couldn’t be in better and safer hands. We are exceptionally proud to have her join us in this capacity and look forward to sharing a rewarding relationship.

It has also been a year filled with love and matrimony. We congratulate our Home & Country staff member, Veloshnee who recently got married, as did Morgan and Kristy from Habiscape. We wish them all the best for a happy future filled with love and laughter.

In closing, as we say goodbye to 2016, we are filled with an immense sense of excitement. We will be launching a variety of new developments within the Estate in 2017 and we can’t wait to introduce you to them. But first, we are seeing this year out in style, with the launch of ‘Timberland at Brettenwood’ - take a look at page 32. Set on possibly one of the best sites on Brettenwood with views of both the sea and the forest, these sectional title units are sure to fly, so make sure you secure yours today!

On behalf of my sisters and everyone at The Hulett Development Company, we wish all our homeowners’ and readers a wonderful festive season and all the best for the New Year.

Regards, Vanessa Armstrong

BCE MAGAZINE | 7 Celebrating 1 year in our new office

Anniversaries are wonderful things. A gentle reminder of a moment in time that was significant. They give us a chance to pause, reflect and raise our glass to the past and say “thank you”. And so, that is exactly what the Hulett Development Company staff did on the anniversary of moving into their now not so ‘new’ home.

The team took a moment to acknowledge Brett Hulett, whose vision Brettenwood Coastal Estate is, and they also acknowledged a year of great achievements and beautiful memories.

A very special thanks goes out to celebrity chef Jackie Cameron who supplied us with the recipes. The team who tried their hand at making the delicious dishes. As well as Vanessa Armstrong, Nikki Chennells and Cindy Rynhoud from Love Laugh who helped create a truly beautiful day.

BCE MAGAZINE | 13 17 Sets of plans. That’s how much thought and time Diane and Helmut Schmucking invested into building this truly magnificent home.

They didn’t settle, just to ‘settle down’. They wanted to make the most out of their big stand and incredible views. And they did so, to exacting specifications. When you walk through their front doors, you can see the value in that.

It is an extraordinary house. Built on the back of extraordinary people (architect included) and it combines both of their personalities beautifully to create something special, seamless and unforgettable.

The first thing you feel as you walk inside is the sheer love of simplicity and space. It’s everywhere. In everything.

The lines of the house open up before you, striking and symmetrical. Every single angle has been built, with purpose and intent. As you walk into one open space it reveals yet another, hidden behind the first. A remarkable testament to a team that had a real vision for what they wanted and how they wanted to get there.

Wednesday Arts & Crafts Club Written by Yvonne Paton

During 2008 the first houses were completed in Forest Village Phase 1.

A harmonious community celebrated braais, St Patrick’s Day, Valentines Day, and everything in between. Community suppers were a roaring success.

There was only one problem. There wasn’t enough crockery to go around. Rose-Marie Schroder came up with the idea to paint our own ceramic plates, and that’s how Hobbies Wednesday was born!

Other arty projects followed, including a challenge to each hobbyist to paint a small canvas of a bird residing on the Estate. The framed Brettenwood Birds artwork currently hanging in the Forest Village Community Centre was as a result of this painting session, with a number of the pieces contributed by residents that had never painted before.

Since then, Wednesday has become a must for many of the residents of Forest Village.

Foresters practice various arts and crafts at a fun filled weekly event (and once a month, a demonstration of a craft it provided by one of our attendees). We knit, do mosaics, beading, pewter, card making, fabric painting, you name it. Oils and water painting is also a big part of the group thanks to Esme’s expert mentoring.

Tea for Ten Written by Liz McQueen

Brettenwood ladies converge on the Forest Village Community Centre to celebrate Tea for Ten.

Our most recent theme (in October) was Pastel Palette and the event, organised by a wonderful team of ladies, Jackie Zarnack, Margie Shone, Frances Hawkins, Zue Hockly, Jean White and Noelette Hall was a great and enjoyable success.

Sylvia Coward our own well-known artist kindly provided the artwork for each table, while Emma Robb, artist and entrepreneur, enter- tained us with stories of her life and escapades. Her anecdotes and quick wit were both delightful and inspirational. Of course, what Tea at 10 would be complete without our namesake? We all enjoyed a delicious tea, provided by our own on site bakers and had a great time in each other’s company. See you all next month, at 10.

BCE MAGAZINE | 23 Baking with Jackie Cameron Brettenwood Book Launch

Summer is a reason to celebrate. So is good homemade food. So, bring them together and you are guaranteed an occasion to be savoured.

Jackie Cameron’s new recipe book, ‘Baking with Jackie Cameron’, was launched at Brettenwood Coastal Estate. It was hosted at the Forest Village Community Centre, with residents with a passion for baking asked to prepare a recipe from the book and bring it along for everyone to taste – and wow! The effort and excitement was phenomenal! Tried, tested, and loved, the morning’s delicious assortment was enjoyed by all, including media delegates and Jackie herself!

Jackie introduced everyone in attendence to her baking world, filled with old-time classics, like your mom or gran used to make, to impress your tastebuds and your sense memory, while also incorporating modern twists and changes (as only a celebrity chef would be able to add so seamlessly). She spoke about her love for food, her passion for family, and the inspiration of this, her second recipe book.

Her first book, ‘Jackie Cameron Cooks at Home’, was the second highest cookbook sold in in 2013, as voted by Exclusive Books, and it earned Jackie ‘Best Woman Chef Book in South Africa’ at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

24 | BCE MAGAZINE “Baking with Jackie Cameron is particularly personal. The recipes in this book have been passed down from generation to generation in my family, and each one of them are a favourite,” explains Jackie.

To add to the celebrations in a perfect, sensory way, we were excited to have Science of Coffee join us and sponsor our sensational coffee for the morning. Science of Coffee is based around the corner from Brettenwood, in Umhlali, and they are known for two things: their passion for coffee, and how they have micro-roasted coffee to an art form. It is their personal endeavour to nurture some of the rarest coffees in the world and bring them to the public, which makes them our kind of people.

Jackie is one of the most exciting chefs in the country today and with over 80 mouth-watering recipes, ‘Baking with Jackie Cameron’ is a book that no kitchen should be without!

Another year has gone by, and much has been achieved on Brettenwood Coastal Estate . We have sold out Forest Village phase 2 and 3, the Lakes (with over 70 units) is sold out barring one 3-bedroom villa, which feels like the end of an era. The future is looking good with Timberland at Brettenwood launching this December. This will include 32 ground and first floor homes, all comprising of 3-bedrooms, 2-bathrooms, double lock-up garages and upmarket finishes. The ground floor homes will have gardens, with an option for a pool. Priced from R3 974 000, with sea and canopy forest views, we are expecting them to sell quickly, so get in touch with the on-site sales team.

We have some beautiful homes on the market, and since we sold our first home at R11 million the interest in this price range has increased. We have two homes either side of R10 million that would be most people’s dream home; one looking at the rolling sugar cane hills over their 2 terraced gardens, and the other looking through to Durban with vast views of the Indian ocean. The homes in Hornbill Hollow have been prepared for building, and are shovel ready. These comprehensive family homes offer you the full package for under R5 million, which is rare in any estate these days.

Having recently been to America where I viewed a lot of real estate opportunities, extending from New York to Dallas, I believe we have an unparalleled offering here on the North Coast. With the low interest rate of 1%, Americans don’t expect the high returns that we are used to here. They have high taxes (that sometimes includes school fees), which can often make it confusing to a foreign based buyer. Vacant land opportunities between two emerging towns is where the wealthy are investing. It’s a similar concept to Umhlanga and Ballito closing in on each other, but over there it happens quicker with their wooden made homes, skilled labour and more transparent municipalities. The Americans believe that having a new president that is also a developer will help put policies in place that strengthen the real estate market and offer more opportunities.

2017 will be the year to get into the North Coast property market before the new mall, new estates and new world-class resorts establish themselves and drive the prices up even more. We are truly blessed to live in a part of the world where everyone would love to live, so why not get a piece of the market with your primary residence or let this be the year you get that investment property along one of the most highly sought-after coastlines in the world.

The Home & Country property team would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sandra Schuit as our on-site rental agent - for all rental enquiries please contact her on 062 896 1814.

In closing, I would like to wish all our readers, clients and especially our residents a wonderful festive season and may God bless all your families with health, wealth and happiness.

46 | BCE MAGAZINE WELCOME TO HORNBILL HOLLOW UNION3’S LATEST MASTERPIECE Meet the Greenes

Who are the Greenes? We are a modern family of four, led by Brendan and Jennilee. We each have a daughter, Graciela and Juliet. The girls are both five years old and, despite being very different characters with their own unique strengths, they get on amazingly. They are such loving stepsisters who have each other’s back - it’s so sweet. And we are expecting our baby boy in April 2017.

What do you do for a living? Brendan is Operations Director at Oilco, a fuel company distributing diesel to wholesale clients and operating Truckstops through KZN.

Jennilee is a teacher at Crawford Primary. She teaches Mathematics and Life Skills to grade 7.

What do you do to have fun? We enjoy eating out, going to the Litchi Orchard night market, and hanging out with friends and family with some meat on the braai and beers on ice. We love to take weekend trips into the Midlands or up to Mfolozi with the girls. Otherwise we just love being home, where we often take the dogs for a walk or swim at the pools with the girls until our fingers go wrinkly.

Why did you invest in Brettenwood? We spent a long time looking at property on the North Coast when Brendan returned from a 2 year working stint in Zambia, and got a good feel for what the area had to offer. In the end, we chose Brettenwood because we felt, hands-down, that it offered the best value in a great area and was most suitable to the kind of lifestyle we wanted for our family. This is thanks to the awesome amenities, the security, and the fact that there isn’t a public restaurant/hotel/golf course on the Estate. That is the subtle differentiator between Brettenwood and the other top estates in the area. Brettenwood is the most tranquil.

Our home also has a lovely open plan kitchen/living area, and it is well suited to renovate/add to.

What do you like the most about the North Coast? Our friends. The restaurants. The vibe.

What amenities in the Estate gives your family the most reward? That would surely be the Woodlands recreation centre.

What is your message for other families looking to move into a gated estate on the North Coast? Estate living is about lifestyle and investment. It’s a great lifestyle choice. In many ways it offers a modern take on the ‘old-days’ where children are safe to ride their bikes around or make mud pies at the dam unsupervised. It’s a great investment choice. As the market evolves, homes in gated estates enjoy significantly higher growth in value compared to traditional residential areas.

You may hear people say that they prefer the ‘freedom’ of not having rules etc, but to us residential ‘freedom’ has a lot to do with how well you sleep at night, how freely your kids can walk or ride about, and not having to stress if you forget to lock the door when you’re enjoying a relaxing couch session at sunset.

Having a well-run homeowners’ association is the core of an estate’s lifestyle and investment offering.

What is South Africa’s best attribute? Thuli Madonsela

BCE MAGAZINE | 47 An Interesting and Exciting Year

Another year has passed by at the speed of light. It has been an interesting and exciting year for South Africa and the world in general.

From a political perspective, in South Africa the perennial Nkandla issue and the battles between our beleaguered President, the ruling party, opposition parties and the outgoing public protector coming to a head. There was a significant shift in control of various metro and other municipalities following the Local Government Elections. The ongoing soap opera surrounding the appointment and removal of our various finance ministers continues. The controversial State of Capture report was released by the outgoing public protector. On the international stage there were two “surprising” results, namely the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom, and the Presidential election in the United States. Both went contrary to the predictions by mainstream international press, which were supposedly based on the results of various polls and the views of various political commentators. How wrong they were. Here in South Africa we will have to wait and see how the continuing political uncertainty and these two watershed political results affect us in 2017 and the years to come. Without doubt there are turbulent times ahead but there will always be opportunities for those who are looking for them.

This year saw the Sectional Title Schemes Management Act, 8 of 2011 and the Community Schemes Ombud Service Act, 9 of 2011 coming into force. These two acts have brought about some changes in the manner in which Sectional Title Schemes in particular, and Housing Estates in general, are managed. In terms of the new legislation, an ombud service has been established, which will serve two main functions, namely to act as a repository for documentation such as body corporate rules which are required to be filed with and approved by the Chief Ombud and to provide a dispute resolution mechanism.

Every body corporate of a sectional title scheme is now required to register and file its management and conduct rules. With regard to disputes, the parties must first try to negotiate a settlement through conciliation and, if unsuccessful, the matter will be referred to an adjudicator whose decision will be binding and may be made an order of court. To fund the ombud service, each community scheme must pay a monthly levy. The levy is calculated proportionate to the monthly levy charged to each owner of property within the scheme. The scheme levy is to be collected by the body corporate or the association and paid to the ombud.

On the home front, within Brettenwood Coastal Estate, construction of the remaining units in Forest Village Phase 3 continues unabated with a large number of the units having been handed over to the buyers. Construction of the first batch of units in the next phase on Brettenwood Lakes was completed. A number of the units were handed over and several have been transferred with the remaining units in the first batch to be transferred before year end. Construction of further units is under way with completion and transfer scheduled to take place during the course of 2017.

Further positives were that the past year saw some respite from the load shedding we have experienced in previous years, although there still appear to be issues with the electricity supply in the greater KwaDukuza area. KwaZulu-Natal and the country were still gripped by the drought during the first half of the year. However, following the much needed rain which fell over the past few months in various parts of the country and particularly in parts of the KwaZulu-Nata, there has been some relief and much needed relaxation of water restrictions to certain areas of the country and the province.

As 2016 nears its end, we wish all the owners and residents on Brettenwood Coastal Estate a happy Festive Season and New Year. We hope 2017 is a positive year for everyone and look forward to being of continued service to you.

48 | BCE MAGAZINE BCE MAGAZINE | 49 TRENDING IN 2017

2017 is knocking on our door, and when we open it… well, we want to be completely on trend don’t we? That’s why we chatted with Durban based Interior Design Specialists, Sharon Milstead Designs, for a little behind the scenes glimpse at what trends are growing and going to hit it big in the New Year.

By tapping into and celebrating their clients own flair and individuality they tailor make interior design executions that really speak to (and of) their clients personalities, while simultaneously giving their homes real character. Balancing this with current trends is an art form, one that they execute beautifully, every time.

DESIGNER TIPS

• Space. It can be manipulated and created even in small areas.

• Wallpapers enhance areas but mirrors are an interior designer’s secret weapon. They can make a room feel far bigger then it is. Quick tip: a wall-to-wall mirror in your guest bathroom will make the space feel far less confined then it actually is.

• Lighting is crucial when it comes to encouraging a sense of space. Nothing opens a room up quite like a little light. Use it cleverly and you can work within the shadows it creates to add depth and perspective.

• If you have a small room, don’t fill it with a big couch. Get a good feel for the scope, scale and proportion of the area you want to furnish before choosing the elements that you put in it. Things have to fit.

• Your canvas is your walls and floor. Choose your colours carefully and build your room (and space) up from there, developing the atmosphere and feel.

50 | BCE MAGAZINE WHAT’S IN

54 | BCE MAGAZINE JACKSON HOUSE FEATURE

BCE MAGAZINE | 55 Inside Jo and Shane Jackson’s beautiful home is a stunning old table. It catches the eye. Not just because it’s a beautiful statement piece, but because it is a little unexpected. Just by looking at it, you know that it must tell a story, the best houses combined with the special signature pieces inside them, always do. They are filled with character, history and personality.

When you walk into the Jackson house you are immediately swept away by its wide open spaces, overflowing with light. It pours in from every direction.

Built ‘shallow’ as they say, this modern design technique allows you to see through the house from end to end, and of course it lets all that glorious light right in.

It’s also how the unforgettable view here (possibly one of the best on the whole Estate) gets celebrated, from every room.

The house itself is in fact a celebration of her father’s vision. Brett Hulett built Brettenwood Coastal Estate based on a dream and he worked hard to make it happen. His commitment to it saw him living his dream on a daily basis, watching it grow around him. He hand picked a stand for each of his daughters, something special just for them and in so doing gifted them a piece of his dream and subsequent legacy.

Jo has built something unique and special on hers. High ceilings, minimilist finishes and great attention to the finer details, all perfect in their simplicity. There is a pool area for instance that is completely protected from any blustery winds, with the house seemingly built around it. It’s an aqua oasis in the midst of everything, and it invites you in.

BCE MAGAZINE | 61 Genetic Testing The Empowered Choice

Written by Camilla Spice (nee Lloys-Ellis)

My journey of genetic discovery began when I was eight years old. I was doing what all little girls do, rummaging through my mum’s closet, when I found two plastic wobbly things that looked a lot like chicken fillets. I remember running to ask my mum about them, and there began the first conversation about our genetic link to cancer.

At age 34, my mum Lilian was diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact a number of the women on her side of the family had developed breast and/or ovarian cancer and many had not survived. With her husband and two small kids to consider, she took the bold decision to have a double mastectomy in order to eliminate the risk of the cancer returning. After the surgery she continued her successful modeling career, using the “chicken fillet” prostheses for a year before undergoing a full reconstruction.

Given her family history, my mum decided to take part in a genetic study that the Erasmus Institute in Holland was undertaking on her female relatives living there. The result came back positive: like many of her extended family, she discovered she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation.

Despite being armed with this knowledge, ten years later, my mother was misdiagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome when in fact she had stage 4 advanced ovarian cancer. It was not an easy battle given the odds after the late diagnosis, but she beat it. Today my mum is as fit and fabulous as ever. She is my role model, having taught me to never give up and never take anything for granted. Most of all, she inspires me to live life to the full each and every day.

”She is my role model, having taught me to never give up and never take anything for granted. Most of all, she inspires me to live life to the full each and every day.”

Heeding my mum’s medical past, in May this year I turned 34, the age when my mum was first diagnosed. With my husband James I have two young daughters, Georgia (4 ½ yrs old) and Olivia (18 months old). I knew I had to test my genes to take control of my future and protect the future of my family.

My gynecologist recommended a wonderful genetic counsellor, then it was simply a matter of giving blood to a local laboratory for testing. We submitted all our supporting documents from the family genetic research in Holland, but in the end it was testing against my mum’s blood that easily identified that I also carried the BRCA1 gene.

Despite my family history, it was a huge shock. We all sat there in disbelief, as my family had not believed I carried it because I have always looked so much like my fathers side of the family. But I had always felt deep down that I did. That moment brought back so many challenging memories for us all, but the knowledge immediately directed my next steps: it was as clear as daylight for me.

If I did nothing with this newfound knowledge I would live my life in fear of each yearly checkup, always expecting the worst.

I had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy on 22 July 2016.

62 | BCE MAGAZINE Genetic Testing The Empowered Choice

I feel extreme relief now that the operation that I feared so deeply has come and gone. The lead up to my mastectomy proved to be one of the most challenging times in my life. In fact, the anticipation turned out to be the most difficult thing of all. Of course, I also feared waking up without breasts….

The operation itself, and the ensuing recovery, has been a lot easier to deal with than I anticipated. My recovery has been fantastic, I have to have another two small procedures – one to swop the expanders for silicone implants and then once that has settled I will have a nipple reconstruction – but I will face them with far more confidence.

Most importantly, I feel a tremendous sense of relief and empowerment following my operation. My risk profile for breast cancer has dropped from 85% to 2% … those figures alone make it all worthwhile.

“Most importantly, I feel a tremendous sense of relief and empowerment following my operation. My risk profile for breast cancer has dropped from 85% to 2% … those figures alone make it all worthwhile. “

Knowledge is power, and it is up to each one of us to take control of our health and proactively manage it. It is hard not to feel uncertain and be scared of facing the reality of your nature, but if my experience is anything to go by it is better to get the tests done and gain the knowledge of your own body so you can respond accordingly. In fact it is incredibly empowering to have your whole genetic story to use as a guideline for how to best look after yourself.

There are many women who think about breast augmentation after having babies. I recommend considering the further step of genetic testing, especially if cancer runs in the family. It is important to take the responsibility to explore your family history and, if necessary, take the easy steps to get tested.

In all areas of our lives, science is revolutionising how we can take more control of our health options. Precautionary, preventative, prophylactic treatment can enable women to take control of their own bodies so that they don’t become victims. I feel that is exactly what it has done for me.

The fear has not been eliminated and my journey continues; however, genetic testing has helped me identify my risk factors. I am in control. I feel empowered, relieved and grateful for the knowledge that we have at our disposal to ensure a healthy future for myself, and in turn for my daughters.

66 | BCE MAGAZINE One of the heroes of any festive occasion is the table. It’s the place where we all come together, as family and friends, to celebrate life and the event (whatever it may be) and make memories.

A beautifully laid out table makes the occasion a little bit more special and the food somehow taste a little bit more delicious.

We enlisted the help of international chef and event planer Sandy Wood of Sandy’s Kitchen (in Johannesburg). Sandy has been getting tables Celebrate buzzing with her simple, delicious and beautiful gourmet dishes for years now, but it not just about the food, presentation is also a big part of the successful package.

For Coastal Luncheons First things first, we live in South Africa, better yet, here at Brettenwood, we live on the coast, so, why coop yourself up indoors staring at 4 walls, when you can pick up your table and take it outside instead. Take advantage of our long summer days and still nights and enjoy your celebrations in the late cooling afternoon, watching the sunset.

Keep it simple, but use the great outdoors to your advantage. Centrepieces that consist of plants (the best ones are in their pots and very much alive) make very attractive talking points.

For Christmas Eve Gold candles and crackers, offset against white flowers make the table feel rich, warm and inviting. Bring in elements of wood if you can, just to make it feel earthy and honest.

For Easter Dress up the table with fresh cut flowers (nice and bright) and finish it with fun earthy rabbit details. Make use of the daylight hours to maximise that afternoon lunch appeal, keeping it light and friendly for the kids while the parents feel they are relaxing in style.

To create your own special tables filled with flowers and unique décor use local supplier Cindy Rynhoud from Love Laugh, based at the Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock, who will be able to assist you with beautiful flower boxes for any occasion
