The ONA’s mandate is to advance, assert, support and preserve Okanagan Nation sovereignty. Further, the ONA is charged with providing members with a forum to discuss and form positions of common concern. The ONA is currently seeking to place a Library Intern in a 20 week supervised Internship. The Intern should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and have excellent communication and time management skills. The Intern will work closely with the Natural Resource Project Lead and assigned staff to complete work plan related deliverables within specific standards and time frames. Key duties and responsibilities The successful incumbent will: . Participate in a specialized Natural Resource Library Initiative according to a detailed work plan. Conduct general library services including cataloguing, organizing, and storing books, texts, photographs, maps, and audio and visual recordings. Input, maintain and summarize data and relevant information in databases and provide data as required. Participate in digitization, categorization and indexing of documents, maps, and audio-visual collections. Qualifications and experience Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident Must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the internship Must not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while participating in the internship Must be unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate Must be a recent graduate who has graduated from college or university within the last 24 months Must not receive Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW Reliable and good work ethic Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Okanagan Aboriginal ancestry Term: Full time 37.5 hours a week, with flexible work hours. Duration of this internship is between October 3, 2016 and March 3, 2017, with possibility for full time employment. Wage rate: $15.00 per hour. Court of Appeal Confirms Rights in Arrow Lakes tkwəɬniwt (Westbank), Syilx Okanagan Territory: The Chiefs of the Syilx Okanagan Nation welcome the May 2, 2019 decision of the British Columbia Court of Appeal in R. v. Desautel, recognizing and protecting Sinixt Aboriginal hunting rights in B.C. Sinixt are inextricably linked to our broader Syilx Okanagan Nation, sharing common language, culture, history, traditions and ancestry. As our Syilx communities include many Sinixt people, this confirmation that Sinixt rights continue to exist in Syilx Okanagan Territory is critically important, particularly in light of the Province of British Columbia’s previous denial of those rights. The case was an appeal of the BC Supreme Court’s affirmation of the BC Provincial Court’s March 27, 2017 decision that found that Richard DeSautel, a member of the Lakes Tribe of the Confederated Colville Tribes (CCT) and a United States citizen, has an Aboriginal right to hunt in the traditional territory of Sinixt people in British Columbia. The BC Court of Appeal dismissed the Province’s appeal and confirmed some key legal principles: • The Aboriginal perspective needs to be taken into account when assessing whether persons who are not resident or citizens of Canada can be “Aboriginal peoples of Canada”; • There is no requirement for there to be a modern-day community in the area where harvesting activities take place for an Aboriginal right to exist - this finding reflects the fact that Indigenous peoples were displaced through the process of colonization and that rights in the Arrow Lakes area were never voluntarily surrendered, abandoned or surrendered.

Alberni-Clayoquot Regional Bridge Replacement on Log Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District is replacing the pedestrian bridge and $40,000 District Train Trail at Platzer Creek repairing the abutments on Log Train Trail at Platzer Creek.
