SHIPBUILDERS TO THE WORLD Introduction The following is extracted and slightly edited from the book ‘Shipbuilders to the World: 125 years of Harland and Wolff, Belfast 1861-1986’ by Michael Moss and John R. Hume published in 1986. The book was intended as a celebratory appraisal of the firm and as such focused mostly on the development of the shipyard. Although it was Edward Harland that began the firm, my interests are more familial than commercial and so the extracts below highlight the roles played by my great, great uncle Wolff and his uncle Gustav Schwabe. Moss and Hume write: During his apprenticeship Edward Harland had become friendly through his uncle, Dr. Thomas Harland, with Gustav Christian Schwabe. Thomas Harland had graduated in medicine from the University in Edinburgh in 1822 and had subsequently practiced in Salford. In 1842 he had married Mary Dugdale, niece of John Dugdale of Dovecot, a powerful Liverpool and Manchester merchant. Some years later Gustav Schwabe had married John Dugdale’s daughter, Helen (right). Gustav had been born in Hamburg in 1813, the son of Philipp Benjamin Schwabe, a wealthy Jewish merchant. During June 1819, along with the rest of his family, Gustav was baptised into the Lutheran church (source Staats Archiv Hamburg). In the 1820s many members of the Jewish community in Hamburg established businesses in Britain where trading conditions were more liberal than in Germany. The Schwabe family participated in this trend. Salis Schwabe, Gustav's uncle, set up a calico printing business in Manchester and cousins M. M. and H. L Schwabe opened a merchant house with a branch in Glasgow. -

NAVY NEWS WEEK 35-2 27 August 2018 Russia debates giving up on building helicopter-carrier ships for its Navy Meduza 14:48, 20 august 2018 There‟s some confusion in Russia‟s shipbuilding business about whether or not the country is done trying to build helicopter carriers. Russia‟s industry and trade minister, Denis Manturov, said in an interview with the news agency Interfax on August 20 that these projects, “in a pure sense of the word,” are over, though the Navy will retain a few such ships. (Manturov added that Russia is still discussing the construction of a second aircraft carrier.) Almost immediately after the interview was published, however, a “high-placed source in Russia‟s shipbuilding industry” told RIA Novosti that the Defense Ministry hasn‟t yet made up its mind about the future of helicopter-carrier construction in Russia. In June 2017, Viktor Bursuk, the deputy head of Russia‟s Navy, said the country planned to acquire two helicopter-carrier ships and complete work on a new aircraft carrier before 2025. Moscow wanted to buy two Mistral-class helicopter-carrier ships from France, but the deal fell through in 2015, following the annexation of Crimea. Those vessels, built for Russia, were ultimately sold to Egypt. The Shipbuilding Collection
Marine Technology Special Collection, Newcastle University, United Kingdom: Shipbuilding Marine Technology Special Collection, Newcastle University, United Kingdom The Shipbuilding Collection Britain was the world’s pre-eminent shipbuilding nation for over a century. It pioneered iron steamships and many novel ship designs, both merchant and naval, which revolutionised world trade. There were over 5000 shipbuilding companies from the 19th century on, operating from around 1000 sites. They built over 80,000 ships, which are recorded on the British Shipbuilding Database, accessible in the Special Collection. [Link to BSD page] The Special Collection holds a wide range of shipbuilding records, some uniQue, some in published form. Some of this is technical, particularly including material from north east of England businesses. For example shipyard data books record details of ships built by a particular company. Much of this data has been incorporated into BSD. An example is from Sunderland shipbuilder Bartram. [insert Bartram image from Blyth poster 2016] Other sources of information which we hold include a good run of annual Lloyds Registers in the 20th century, recording every seagoing ship in the world. We have almost complete runs of most ship technical journals, including The Shipbuilder, Shipbuilding & Shipping Record, Motor Ship and the Marine Engineer. Olsen Energy acquires property interests of Harland and Wolff BELFAST, 7 February 2001 – Fred Olsen Energy ASA (FOE), the parent company of Harland and Wolff Group PLC, last week released its financial statements for the 4th Quarter 2000 and preliminary results for the full year. Specifically in relation to Harland and Wolff they said : “FOE has extended financial support totalling GBP 89 mill (including a GBP 50 mill loan guarantee) to the yard, secured by the property interests (including Titanic Quarter), and proceeds from the claims against Global Marine. “An agreement has now been signed with the Belfast Harbour Commissioners for the commercial development of approximately 100 acres of land adjacent to the city centre of Belfast (Titanic Quarter). A professional project management team is being retained to develop the overall business plan and submit a planning application due to be filed within this summer. “The Company announced on 17 November that the payment from Global Marine of the USD 31 mill. delivery instalment on the drillship Jack Ryan, as awarded by an Arbitration Tribunal, had been turned down by the High Court on appeal. Harland and Wolff has appealed this judgement to the Court of Appeals, which has granted a hearing. “As previously announced, Harland and Wolff’s main claim against Global Marine is subject to arbitration at a later point in time.” Fred. Olsen Energy has today announced that: “In order to further secure its interests, and in an effort to strengthen the balance sheet of Harland and Wolff, a subsidiary of Fred.Olsen Energy ASA has purchased the property interests from Harland and Wolff for a gross consideration of GBP 46 mill. -

These were that after the ending of the Shipbuilding Industry Board (SIB) in December 1971, there would be no case on economic grounds for giving special support to the industry other than that afforded by the home credit scheme and by "shipbuilders relief" (the latter being a 2 per cent subsidy). It was concluded, however, that on regional employment grounds any major closures ought to be phased over a period. This policy was reviewed by the Committee in May 1971 and reaffirmed. 2. The first real test of the policy came when Upper Clyde Shipbuilders (UCS) collapsed in June 1971. We let the collapse take place and have been seeking to pick up the bits, redundancies being phased over a period at high cost to public funds, in view of the high level of unemployment on Clydeside, Now we are faced with Cammell Laird, saved from imminent collapse by the promise of a Government loan, though only temporarily; Doxford which could go the same way at any moment, and Swan Hunter and Lower Clyde either of which could come to grief and would no doubt be in greater danger of doing so as a result of confidence being still further shaken by Cammell Laird or Doxford.
