The debate involves the m.orality form. of his dram.as and their non-m.orality content. It rem.ains unresolved as an indication of Marlowe's own irresolution. Tam.burlaine dram.atizes· the debate between accepting or rejecting a'world conqueror; The Jew of Malta vacillates between pitying andcondem.ning its villain-hero, Barabas;. Edward the Second has the curious appeal of a study in weakness; Doctor Faustus exposes the double culpability of its rebellious scholar-hero and of the ·restricting Christian system. which Faustus discards. The study analyzes these four plays to by subm.itting this tradition to m.anipulation, perversIon, debilitation and violation, the playwright rem.ains clearly in control of the m.orality structures he uses. Two discoveries result from. an exam.ination of such control: Marlowe's artistry in being unresolved continues to be an area of fascination and his deliberate irresolution m.ilitates against calling him. -

Graham Nesmith Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/dram/article-pdf/46/1 (173)/93/1820986/105420402753555877.pdf by guest on 26 September 2021 Eric Bentley, who was born in England, educated at Oxford, and received his Ph.D. in drama from Yale in 1941, is arguably the foremost Euro-American com- mentator on 20th-century drama. Among his many books are A Century of Hero Worship: A Study of the Idea of Heroism in Carlyle and Nietzche (1944); Bernard Shaw: A Reconsideration (1947); In Search of Theatre (1953); The Dramatic Event (1954); What Is Theatre? (1956); The Life of the Drama (1964); The Theatre of Commitment and Other Essays on Drama in Our Society (1967); Theatre of War: Comments on 32 Occasions (1972); and What Is Theatre? 1944–1967, a collection of his theatre criti- cism reissued in 2000 by Hill and Wang. Many of his books are required reading in theatre programs around the country. Bentley wrote theatre reviews and criti- cism for Harper’s magazine in the 1940s, and was the drama critic for the New Republic from 1952 to 1956. He has been a professor of dramatic literature at various universities, including Columbia, where he was the Brander Matthews Professor of Dramatic Literature from 1954 to 1969. Bentley has been a guest director at theatres around the world; and his translations of plays by Brecht and Pirandello, among others, have been produced internationally.He also has written his own plays, including Are You Now or Have You Ever Been: The Investigation of a Show (1972), Lord Alfred’s Lover (1980), and Round 2 (1990). -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Kenneth Tynan called Eric Bentley "the most adventurous drama critic in America," but Bentley is more than a drama critic. At various times in his life, he has also been a college professor, translator, director, theorist, historian, and playwright. Even when he was deeply closeted, he consistently supported the representation of same-sex desire in the theater. Eric Russell Bentley was born on September 14, 1916, in Bolton, Lancashire, England, and educated at Bolton School and Oxford University, where he received a B.A. in 1938. Bentley came to the United States in order to pursue a Ph.D. in drama at Yale University. After receiving his degree in 1941, he stayed on in the United States, becoming an American citizen in 1948. Bentley taught at a number of universities, including Harvard, State University of New York-Buffalo, University of Minnesota, and University of Maryland, but was primarily associated with Columbia University, where he taught from 1953 until 1969 and was the Brander Matthews Professor of Dramatic Literature for almost twenty years. During his career, Bentley published numerous books of criticism and established himself as a respected theater critic. His What Is Theater? (1956) and Life of the Drama (1964) are often cited as his most influential theoretical works. His stint as theater critic at The New Republic (1952-56), gave him an opportunity to criticize contemporary plays. His blunt assessments of works by Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams created controversy and gained him a reputation as a demanding and meticulous reviewer. -

ERIC BENTLEY'S "DOUBLE" LIVES Timothy J. Schaffer All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Eric Bentley is arguably one of the most prominent theatre scholar-critics of the twentieth century. He is perhaps best known for translating and advocating for Brecht's plays in English- speaking countries. In books such as The Playwright as Thinker, he makes the case for non- commercial theatre as a political force and valuable form of cultural expression. In his later career, he turned his attention towards playwriting, which he identifies as his most worthwhile pursuit. His transition from critic to playwright is just one of many major shifts in his life and career, which I argue is defined by doubleness. Bentley even describes himself as living several double lives. These shifts involve politics, sexuality, culture, and artistic expression. In this study, I analyze various writings from throughout Bentley's career in order to examine the sociopolitical energies at play in his work. Early in this study, I establish post-structural analysis as my overarching theoretical frame. I specifically employ the writings and theories of Michael Foucault, Stephen Greenblatt and the new historicists. Leftist politics and Marxism provide another broad arc to my study of Bentley's work. My theoretical approach allows me to examine his position within a constantly shifting field of power relations as it relates to public and private social, political, cultural, and artistic issues. -
