  • Lega Nord and Anti-Immigrationism: the Importance of Hegemony Critique for Social Media Analysis and Protest
International Journal of Communication 12(2018), 3553–3579 1932–8036/20180005 Lega Nord and Anti-Immigrationism: The Importance of Hegemony Critique for Social Media Analysis and Protest CINZIA PADOVANI1 Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA In this study, I implement Antonio Gramsci’s hegemony critique to analyze the anti- immigration rhetoric promoted by the Italian ultraright party Lega Nord [Northern League]. Specifically, this case study focuses on the discourse that developed on the microblogging site Twitter during the Stop Invasione [Stop Invasion] rally, organized by Matteo Salvini’s party on October 18, 2014, in Milan. I argue that hegemony critique is helpful to investigate political discourse on social media and to theorize the struggle surrounding contentious topics such as immigration. The method, which is multilayered and includes content analysis and interpretative analysis, allows for the exploration of a considerable data corpus but also an in-depth reading of each tweet. The result is a nuanced understanding of the anti-immigration discourse and of the discourse that developed in favor of immigration and in support of a countermarch, which progressive movements organized in response to Lega’s mobilization on the same day in Milan. Keywords: Lega Nord, ultraright media, far-right media, anti-immigrationism, Twitter, critical social media analysis, mobilization, Gramsci, hegemony critique The rise of ultraright movements in Western Europe and the United States is an indication of the continuous crisis of capitalism and neoliberal ideologies. The financial and economic downturn that plagued Europe and North America beginning in late 2008 and the consequent Brussels-imposed austerity in the European Union have exacerbated the rift between the haves and the have-nots.

  • Augustinian Christian Philosophy
AUGUSTINIAN CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY How does Christianity bear on philosophy? Is there such a thing as Christian philosophy, or are there only Christians who are also philoso phers? How should Christianity and philosophy be related? Should they be related? In "Advice to Christian Philosophers" I said that Christian philosophers should display more autonomy: they have their own fish to fry, their own projects to pursue, (or their own axes to grind, as some might prefer to put it). Here I want to say more about what these projects (or fish, or axes) are like. And the right way to think about these matters, so it seems to me, is broadly Augustinian. Accordingly, I want to propose a program matic sketch (a very programmatic sketch) of a conception of Christian philosophy that grows out of some central Augustinian emphases. I don't claim, however, that Augustine in fact thought of Christian philosophy the way I shall suggest. The primary focus of my paper is not historical (that would in any event be beyond my competence); what I want to do is make a suggestion as to how we should think about Christian philosophy now; but this way of thinking of the matter grows out of Augustinian roots.! It's worth noting, furthermore, that what is at issue is not just a way of thinking about Christianity and philosophy, but about Christianity and scholarship more generally. There are at least four elements in Augustinian Christian philosophy. The first two of these are widely recognized and relatively uncontroversial: I shall therefore be brief about them.

To that end, it presents the first comprehensive reading of James through the lens of liberal rather than scientific naturalism. Chapter 1 offers an extensive survey of the varieties of philosophical naturalism that provides the conceptual tools required for the rest the thesis, and allows us to provisionally locate James within the field.

  • The Italian Cultural Institute in New York Announces
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Italian Cultural Institute in New York announces an International Conference ON THE ASHES OF POST-MODERNISM: A NEW REALISM Initiative of the Framework Program “Slowness and Quality” promoted by La Fondazione (NYC) Sponsored by Alitalia Italian Cultural Institute, New York Monday November 7, 2011 9:50am – 5:20pm NY, November 7, 2011 The recent years of economic crisis and geopolitical transformations have led post- modernism to a critical point. Tenets such as the one that reality is socially constructed and ceaselessly modifiable, and that truth and objectivity are untenable notions are increasingly showing signs of rejection by a growing number of thinkers. The “facts” cannot be reduced to interpretations and strike back claiming a “new realism”. World famous public intellectuals Umberto Eco and Hilary Putnam and prominent philosophers Akeel Bilgrami, Giovanna Borradori , Ned Block, Paul Boghossian , Petar Bojanic, Mario De Caro, Maurizio Ferraris, Markus Gabriel, Alvin Goldman, Armando Massarenti and Riccardo Viale will discuss the return of “strong” ideas after decades of “weak” thinking. Implications are not only logical, ontological, and epistemological, but also widely social, psychological, and ethical. Umberto Eco (born 5 January 1932) is an Italian expert of semiotics, essayist, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist, best known for his novel “The Name of the Rose” (Il Nome della Rosa, 1980), an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. He has also written academic texts, children's books and many essays. Eco is the founder of the Dipartimento di Comunicazione at the Università di San Marino , President of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Umanistici, Università di Bologna , member of the Accademia dei Lincei (since November 2010) and an Honorary Fellow of Kellogg College, University of Oxford .
