3 Gawler Car Club member Wolfgang Ritter has been a busy lad of late , doing a ground up construction of a replica of Tom Kruse Leyland Badger Mail truck in min- iature, shrunk onto a donor golf cart. Wolfgang was one of a group that volunteered to take on the build of the education tool for the National Mo- tor Museum back in January.

The “electric” quarter scale truck will become a great activity for the young when finished said National Motor Museum Educa- tion manager Ian Reed , as it takes Birdwood National Motor Mu- seum junior enthusiasts on a planned drive ( yes the kids drive) around Museum grounds retracing the Tom Kruse lifeline Mail run from Marree to Birdsville in the 1930’s thru to the late 50’s .

Students will learn how to and load and strap luggage , follow maps and directions and actually get to drive the 48 volt trucklett, but no sandhill after sandhill like the original truck traversed .

Ian and Wolf mentioned the Kruse () Truck comes in a purpose built trailer that will be taken on tour to Schools and functions as an education tool reigniting and promoting South Australia’s outback motoring history, the theme is based on the outback story book ”Tom, the outback mail- man” .Ian also mentioned that there is an ABC story about the mini replica truck illustrating the story of TOM KRUSE the outback mailman, so keep look a look out for that.

The original restored Leyland Badger sits proudly up at Birdwood after being brought back to life in the 80’s (member Bob Dyer chats about his involvement with that later in these pages) , and if you want more info on the Tom Kruse legend , get a copy of the 1954 clas- sic movie “Back of Beyond” the story of the mail delivery on the Birdsville and Strezleckie track by Tom Kruse, a bottler piece of history, (might be a film night fundraiser for members eh!) or just youtube it on yr computer . Its last drive took it through Gawler as Tom drove to his sister’s place ( James Martin Village)

Wolfgang mentioned that the 6 , yes the mini truck has 6 wheels were donated by member Corey Wake and that the motor has a speed regulated control with auto disable ability for total safety , best use of a golf cart yet eh! Some people are legends in their own lifetime …… and Tom Kruze certainly qualifies. I was in Maree recently and in a large dining area in the Maree Hotel there is a photo display and continuous film depicting the exploits of Tom Kruze, the Maree Mailman. The area around Maree is desolate with times of extreme heat, desert dust storms, moving sand hills and un-maintained tracks. In this unforgiving desolation , Tom Kruze became the life-line for isolat- ed station properties and tiny settlements. He delivered the mail, fuel, food and other needed supplies to these outposts of bush civilisation, often under extreme hardship for man and machine. His film portrays that clearly Tom’s attitude of service, happy friendly outlook, extreme patience, vehicle maintain- ing skills and dedication and self-sacrifice sets him apart as a bush legend. There is one of his old Blitz mail trucks displayed on the railway platform at Maree. There is another of his old Blitz trucks in the Wadlata Museum in Pt. Augusta so it seems that he wore out a few. His most famous vehicle, the 1932 Leyland Badger is on display at the Birdwood National Motor Museum. The Badger has a double set of wheels at the rear which was a modification that Tom Kruze made when he found a wrecked old Thornycroft truck with a dual set of rear wheels that he used to modify the Badger making it more suitable for the demands of outback driving. In the mid eighties, a group of enthusiasts ( including member Bob Dy- er) collected and worked with Tom to carefully restore the old Beaver back to its former glory. Many Members may not be aware of the fact that Tom Kruze joined our Gawler Car Club and we issued him with a Log Book so the Badger could be road tested and driven to the many locations where, with Tom, it was displayed enroute to its final destination at the Birdwood Museum. Tom Kruze had a sister who was a resident at the James Martin Retirement Village in Gawler so Tom and the Badger came to Gawler to visit her. The truck and Tom were there for some time and many of us felt honoured to meet him and closely inspect his legendary truck. If you visit Birdwood Museum the story of Tom Kruze is well displayed there. Cheers Trevor Bellchambers

4 Tom Kruse was a physically big, strong man. "One of the stories about him was he could lift a 44-gallon drum of fuel by himself on to his truck." Much more than action stunts, Kruse's feats made life in the out- back a little bit easier — he was the connection to the outside world. A round trip would take two weeks, with no nicely made roads to do it on ,sandhill upon sandhill. There were tracks left by bullock teams and then cameleers, but they'd often be washed away ... when it flooded the lakes would be miles wide and so he'd use a boat and leave the truck on the other side," Mr Reed said. No mission was impossible for the outback Kruse. Tom Kruse the film star Kruse's life was a world away from Hollywood, but like the "other" Tom Cruise, the outback legend also found fame through film. In the 1954 documentary Back of Beyond, Tom Kruse played himself — a film crew following his journey. The film won a string of gongs, including at the Venice Biennale. For much of the world, Back of Beyond was their first glimpse of Australia's outback. These days, Kruse's truck is one of the museum's key exhibits, explaining how motoring changed Australia. Beautifully restored, it sits in splendid isolation behind a low barrier, along with the first model Holden car and the first Ford ute. For Ian Reed of the Motor Museum, nothing better sums up the problem at the heart of any museum's relationship with kids — there is this fascinating old stuff, but under absolutely no circumstances can you touch it. "Kids love to touch things and if you tell them they can't touch something, they find that a bit affronting," Mr Reed said. "They need to experience as many senses as they can ... so if you give kids permission to touch they really appreciate that." But Mr Reed has gone one better than telling kids they can touch the Kruse truck, he's letting them drive it — sort of. Normally, for a museum employee that would be a quick trip to dismissal, but with the electric replica truck charged up , its kids, load up and drive the track. Tom Kruse died in 2011 aged 96.

Bob Dyer put together this terrific slice of history and lent us a a couple of photo's taken whilst on the recov- ery run for Tom's 1932 Leyland Badger truck back in May, 1986. Bob said he got involved because his brother in law was a mate of the organizer Dave Burge of Leigh creek. “We all gathered at Marree for the unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque then headed of up the track with an overnight stop at the Coopers Creek. The next night at Birdsville , they ran the movie "Back of Beyond" The following day, a small group of enthusiasists headed out to try to locate and recover the truck which had been abandoned at Pandi Station east of Birdsville. Tom was able to recall where the truck was and we were all surprised to find it in the condition that it was after about 25 years, Tom even said that with a couple of hours he thought he could get it going. After changing two tyres and pumping up the others we towed it into Marree. It was later trucked to Adelaide. A commemorative bottle of port was produced and there was also a special stamped mail delivery. This whole exercise was filmed by the ABC for their Landline program.” Bob has a copy of this but it is on a VHS tape. Tom's 1932 Leyland Badger as it was found after about 25 years abandoned on Pandi Station in Queensland. It was recovered for restoration on the 2O May 1986. 5 Mid North Adventure……………………………………….…………..Sunday 29th. April , 2018

Sunday dawned with the feel of a great day to travel north. The adventurers gathered and soon after nine am they were gathered together for a welcome and instruction/map sheet and encouraged to leave as soon as they could for the long drive to Mintaro, to ar- rive at the Mintaro Maze for morning tea before another group who were expected there at 11:00 am. After our cuppa we headed off in convoy to Martindale Hall, a magnificent Georgian Style Mansion built in 1879. The interior 32 rooms, grand stair case, the period furniture and fittings all reflect the opulence of the life of the large land holders in earlier times. A wonderful museum of our past. Back into Mintaro which as a town is part of a State Heritage Area, We had a local historian who travelled around with us, Phillip Smith who talked to our Members about the local history and at- tractions and we sincerely thank him for that. Lunch was at the historic Magpie and Stump Hotel which was established to cater for the men carting copper ingots from Bur- ra to Pt. Wakefield and bringing coal back for the copper smelting. The bullock teams could manage around 9 miles (14.5 km) a day so a lot of small towns were established in the mid-north to facilitate the movement of copper to the coastal port. The weather was very pleasant so our group of 41 Members were allocated tables on the lawn area and the great loca- tion, food and company was enjoyed by all. After lunch Members were encouraged to explore the surrounding historic buildings and when ready to follow the pink road home on the map provided or follow the green road to Clare to view the special garden displays as the Clare Garden Festival was also on the same day. My sincere thanks to all who attended to enjoy this Mid-north Adventure. Trevor Bellchambers.

The Primrose E type coupe with the MGs is Corrie’s Truck run to Lyndoch via Kersbrook………………………………... Sunday 15th.April , 2018 Weather was a little wet and a little windy , not the best for attracting a lot of participation in this run……But 14 or so Commercial vehicles came out , from a classic motor home to a big Mack, a selection of smaller trucks and long time member (diamond) Jim Craig got his rig out for the drive ….. and the Mayor of Gawler Karen Redman came out to send us off on the drive. The event was well planned by Larry Cavallaro involving a page of questions to be responded to by the navigators, and with prizes at the end donated by Larry, it went off a real treat , a great morning drive finishing off at the Lyndoch bak- ery for a morning snack ,coffee or breakfast. Brett Unsworth was able to shoot a video at the start when there was a break in the rain. The video is shown of the truck/ute run if you go to our website Larry and Kath prepare members for the run gawlercarclub.com No one was really bothered by the rain as we desperately needed it ,a fun ride for all. And as the prizes were handed out , the rain slowed. Good thing all our wind- screen wipers work eh?

Diamond Jim with Jail bar Ford for the morning Larry reads the results of the drive Q & A competition 6 Sedans, snags and stories , Pioneer Park...... …..Sunday May 6, 2018 Well, a great day was had by all involved, with over 10 club cars displayed on Pioneer Park , for the first collaboration between the club and the Gawler Oral History Project. Stalls were set up by various local history groups and the weather was magnificent, Larry Cavallaro and new member Mark Cavanagh were on BBQ detail and cooked up a storm as our members and sat down with GOHP members and recorded some of their car history and memories, (even the Mayor of Gawler recorded her early car memories) adding to the collection that the project is collating. These recordings are going on their website along with many others to build up an oral history of Gawler which now includes vehicle history, very exciting Bob and his Zeta Over 200 people wandered thru the cars and stalls throughout the day and as a first time event it has been deemed a great success with follow up events to happen each year. Cheers Paul B.

Nuts and Bolts day at the Boundy homestead……..…………………….Sunday 20th May, 2018

We all enjoyed our out- ing to the Boundy property today. Jeanne and Geoffrey had arranged for our club and the Wanderers 4WD club to get together and look at some repairs to be made in emergency conditions such as radiator repairs and also demonstrated arc welding using normal motor vehicle batteries. Our hosts provided a top morning tea with many Willys Whippett types of nice cakes . In addition to this Jeff, Anthony and Brian chat under a Jag bonnet we were supplied with beautiful warm damper made on the fire by Chris { 4WD member } and topped with butter and home made jams. Most of us bought our own lunches but many of us took the lunch home to eat for the evening meal after the many other eats provided there. We would like to thank Geoffrey and Jeanne for this very interesting day out and also for all of the organisation for this day. We feel that with our club having close to 600 members now we were disappointed in the small number of members who took the opportunity to come along today given the effort taken by our hosts. 7 BREAKFAST RUN Watershed Café Mawson Lakes…….……….Wednesday 3RD June, 2018 It was a really cold morning when we met at Park as usual, at 8am for the normal 8.30am start. We travelled along Main North Road to Kings Road, then onto Salisbury Highway to Mawson Lakes. We turned into the car park of the Water- shed Café – our destination for our break- fast.

Twenty three brave souls entered into an enclosed but not sealed half out-door area. A keen breeze was very uncomforta- Breakfast was a treat ble especially as the temperature was 3 degrees! Simon, the Manager of the com- plex, had us moved into the Function Don and his Merc 350 sl Room that had warm air conditioning - much to everyone’s satisfaction.

I am sure everyone enjoyed the next two or so hours chatting with some new- found or old friends while eating a variety of yummy breakfasts. Unfortunately there was some mix-up with the coffee orders Doug with his Toyota Crown that were eventually delivered. The café has several different areas where anyone may sit so the staff was literally ‘on the run’ and Anthony’s Jaguar S type coped fairly well as we were situated in a room not normally used.

The Café is in a beautiful setting that has several walks around the wetlands that can be enjoyed on a warmer day. Well . Stuff me mushrooms. That was a well organised June long Weekend for the Club. A BIG thanks goes to the four prominent members , the Bellchambers' and the Bywaters' for all of their work in get- ting it all up and running. Friday evening went well despite cool conditions with a BBQ at the motel where most of us stayed and was cooked by the above team. Saturday was taken up firstly by a visit to the Large Agricul- tural Museum just on the NSW side of the Paringa Bridge. This included morning tea and they had arranged for the large bridge to be opened for us!!. From there we drove to Loch 5 for a large and very satisfying lunch. A visit to Cammies antiques was also included. The highlight of this day was our excursion on the Steamship P.S. INDUSTRY and afternoon tea on board with great scenery passing by. Dinner was served this night at the Renmark Hotel. Sunday was a very very long drive day with a visit to Griffiths Farm out past Alawoona where we saw a very large display of top notch classic cars in a very large shed, plus other displays and morning tea. From there we drove cross country to Gibbs Paringa bridge, how awesome is this view Farm for a big display of Trucks, Stationary engines and Trac- tors etc. There we were served a very nice lunch. After this we drove to Mays Farm where we saw another very interesting collection of mainly Ford vehicles and there had another afternoon tea.. Dinner that night was at the Paringa Hotel. Monday started with a visit to Olive wood Homestead and saw a lot of early Loxton interests then off to the Kumquatery to look at this very unusual busi- ness and have some tastings plus checking out the stationary engines. we then moved on and Lunch was then served at the Bella Lavender Estate and was very nice and filling. After that we drove to the Cobdogla Irrigation & Steam Museum where we all enjoyed a train ride and a good look around. Then some of us went on further to look at a large display of lots of classic cars left to deteriorate out in paddocks at the mercy of the weather. Very sad. Renmark evening meal At the end of this day some members took the return journey home while the rest returned to the Renmark area and went on Tuesday to other destinations as directed by the team. This only covers a small part of a huge long weekend that we all enjoyed .Thanks to the above organisers and also to June for her beaut window displays again.

Regards Brewan

12 To the editor……...I hope that this is not too late for the next edition. Yesterday (8th June) we were in a Caravan Park at Timber Creek in the Northern Territory, a long way from nowhere, when the car shown in the photo attached arrived. It is a 1915 Model T Ford which is being driven around the world by a Dutch Couple. . They com- menced the Australian link in Brisbane several weeks ago and have rotated clock wise. They had just come from Kununnurra WA and had also just completed the Gibb River Road, a challenge for any vehicle. At one stage the water crossing was half way up the radiator. It has been modified a little for the run with an alternator and 12 volt electrics and an electric cooling fan, and a comprehensive period set of instruments (including a tacho, maximum reading 4000 rpm) , but apart from that the running gear is pretty well to spec including the great wooden wheels. They have a Land Defender as a support vehicle, and friends and family rotate in the support role, great story I thought. Regards Alvin and Sylvia Jenkin

To the editor... Many thanks to Perry, Mike and Don for their reply`s to my request on improvements / upgrades on my MGB. The most popular comment being to upgrade the ignition system which makes sense on a 1970 car. Thanks Guy`s all comments very much appreciated. Kind Regards Anthony Ellis.

13 IMarque of the month …… ……………………. issue 4 of a 7 part series by club Member Trevor Bellchambers In Oct. 1954 the XK120 was replaced by the evolutionary XK140 with the options of overdrive and later automatic transmission. During 1957 disc brakes were added to a new model, the XK150 with one piece windscreen, smoother body lines, increased inte- rior space, becoming a sporting touring car. The XK150s were very fast with superb brak- ing. In 1956 Wiliam Lyons was knighted for his out standing service to British Industry. The Racing Cats.. in 1950 Lyons decided to build a sports racing car for Le Mans. The resultant C Type was very successful racer. In 1954 the legendary D Type , considered by many to be the classic post-war sports racing car, embracing aircraft technology in construction and aerodynamics, and has become one of the most sought after collector cars in the world. The Sporting Saloons.. The Mk.7 Sedan was launched in 1950 and the line of large saloons continued with the Mk.8, Mk.9, the bulb- ous Mk.10 and the 420G. Jaguar needed a 'volume' car to boost production and in 1955 the smaller 2.4L. (Mk.1) jaguar Saloon was intro- duced in 1957 a 3.4L. version became available. The smaller saloons continued with the iconic Mk.2 from 1959 to 1967. The 3.8L Mk.2 was at one stage the fastest production car available and are still very sought after by collectors. Mid sized saloons were introduced as the S Type in 1963 and the 420 in 1967. Frontal styling differences between the Mark 1 (2.4- and 3.4-litre models) top left and the Mark 2 design from 1959 to 1967. bottom left, the Mark 2 shows revised lighting treatment with flush-mounted log lights. Separate indicator lenses (different colours dependent on market), and pronounced vertical centre rib to the grille. In 1960 Jaguar bought the after which time Jaguar models had a Daimler equivalent, but a little luxurious. Sir William Lyons retired in 1972, John Egan was appointed Jaguar Chairman in 1980 and he and Mike Beasley (Assistant Managing Director) deter- mined to sort the current quality problems, mainly caused by suppliers to jaguar. Jaguar be- came once more the flagship of the British Motor Industry. John Egan was knighted in 1996 for this fine achievement. In 1961 the sensational EK-E or E Type was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show where it captured the world's imagination and never let it go. The E Type took the D Type concept and adapted it for the road, making its level of performance available to all. Open and closed body styles were offered, both being strictly two-seaters.

the XJ13 with a V12 engine. is an exceptional car, an amazing piece of aerodynamic art designed by Malcolm Sayer (1916-1970). the original 1960’s prototype of the XJ13 is worth an estimated £14 million (about $27 million) Sayer was the designer of and one of the first engineers to apply principles of aerody- namics to car design. his designs included the now famous jaguar C-type (also called XK120-C, due to its being based on the jaguar XK120) Jaguar D-type jaguar e-type jaguar XJS (although the car launched several years after sayer’s death).

MONARO RUST..by Brett Unsworth

After the last race meeting of the season at Collingrove in August I decided to strip the roof back to bare metal and remove some rust that was showing through with the plan to have the car ready to take to BBQ night at the club in November.

As you can see in the photo taken on the 15/8/2017 after starting to rub the main rust area down I uncovered a fair size hole in the roof which I cleaned out all the flaking rust and cut out a rectangle section to weld a new piece in on the 19/8/2017. By 31/8/2017 as you can see in the photo that side of the roof was pretty much ready to spray and now I had the rest of the roof to rub down which I found there was surface rust right across the roof.

By the 11/10/2017 I had the roof back to bare metal and ready to undercoat so I undercoat- ed the roof and started rubbing down the rear quarter panels to give them a fresh coat of paint and also rub the boot back as the paint there was very cracked and tought I still had plenty of time., However towards the end of October work went crazy and I started working long days right through November and December and had no time to work on the car so I then set my sights on having the vehicle ready for the Australia Day run ,but after Christmas which I only had 3 days off ,work was still coming in and still had no time to work on the car so I thought as long as I had the car ready for the first round of the Winter Cup at Collingrove which is usually early April.

Well on the 3/3/2018 I received an email which was the entry form and regulations for the first Winter Cup with was on the 18th of March 2018 and I thought oh I must get stuck into that car as from the photo is still in undercoat and still needed to rub down the quarter panels and doors and finish the boot. After a few late nights the I finally finished buffing it on the 17th of March and it came out pretty good seeing it ended up being a rush job….Kind Regards Brett Unsworth Com- mittee member and His- toric Club Registrar
