Mel Shorter …………………………………..0409 497 209 3 Gawler Car Club member Wolfgang Ritter has been a busy lad of late , doing a ground up construction of a replica of Tom Kruse Leyland Badger Mail truck in min- iature, shrunk onto a donor golf cart. Wolfgang was one of a group that volunteered to take on the build of the education tool for the National Mo- tor Museum back in January. The “electric” quarter scale truck will become a great activity for the young when finished said National Motor Museum Educa- tion manager Ian Reed , as it takes Birdwood National Motor Mu- seum junior enthusiasts on a planned drive ( yes the kids drive) around Museum grounds retracing the Tom Kruse lifeline Mail run from Marree to Birdsville in the 1930’s thru to the late 50’s . Students will learn how to and load and strap luggage , follow maps and directions and actually get to drive the 48 volt trucklett, but no sandhill after sandhill like the original truck traversed . Ian and Wolf mentioned the Kruse (mini) Truck comes in a purpose built trailer that will be taken on tour to Schools and functions as an education tool reigniting and promoting South Australia’s outback motoring history, the theme is based on the outback story book ”Tom, the outback mail- man” .Ian also mentioned that there is an ABC story about the mini replica truck illustrating the story of TOM KRUSE the outback mailman, so keep look a look out for that. The original restored Leyland Badger sits proudly up at Birdwood after being brought back to life in the 80’s (member Bob Dyer chats about his involvement with that later in these pages) , and if you want more info on the Tom Kruse legend , get a copy of the 1954 clas- sic movie “Back of Beyond” the story of the mail delivery on the Birdsville and Strezleckie track by Tom Kruse, a bottler piece of history, (might be a film night fundraiser for members eh!) or just youtube it on yr computer . Its last drive took it through Gawler as Tom drove to his sister’s place ( James Martin Village) Wolfgang mentioned that the 6 , yes the mini truck has 6 wheels were donated by member Corey Wake and that the motor has a speed regulated control with auto disable ability for total safety , best use of a golf cart yet eh! Some people are legends in their own lifetime …… and Tom Kruze certainly qualifies.
