    UNIT 2C TRADITION 59: ORTHODOX TEACHERS AND SAINTS OF THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES Introduction – Breaking the Bonds After the failure of the Council of Florence and the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453 the Christian east began to slide into a period of prolonged decline. Bemused by the Reformation which had racked the West yet lacking the theological and spiritual vigour which might have insulated the Church from corrosive Western influences, Orthodoxy began to imitate western manners and culture. Most notoriously, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Cyril Lukaris, (1572-1638), in his struggle against the growing dominance of Rome, resorted to Protestant Calvinism and his teaching was condemned by no less than six local councils between 1638 and 1691. In an attempt to fight fire with fire and as a direct response to the career of Lukaris, two Confessions of Orthodox faith were issued by Peter Mogila, Metropolitan of Kiev (1633-1647) and Dositheus, Patriarch of Jerusalem (1669-1707), both Confessions being consciously adapted from Roman Catholic sources and both works being part of a wider disastrous program of westernisation. The 18th century, therefore, saw Orthodoxy in the East increasingly incarcerated within a western mindset which debilitated its spiritual life. The hierarchy in Russia not only looked to Rome as the model for efficient church administration, (urged on by Peter Mogila), but in the person of Patriarch Nikhon (1605-1681) it looked also to contentious models for liturgical reform. In 1652 to 1653 this policy triggered in Russia a tragic split between those who would not submit to the new ritual, the so- called Old Believers, and the reformers, a schism which has not been properly healed to this day.

May her memory be eternal. ii Abstract Focusing on three Orthodox Christian communities – St. Paraskeva and St. Luke in Midwestern US, and St. Nicolas in Atlantic Canada – this thesis examines the complex cultural dynamics surrounding Orthodox Christianity in North America. I explore the ways believers, both the Orthodox-born and new converts, negotiate with an ancient faith in a contemporary society where this faith may appear counter-cultural. Building on Leonard Primiano’s (1995) theory of vernacular religion, I propose the concept of vernacular theology to shed light on these processes. Despite the illusion of theology as the exclusive purview of clergy, laypeople exercise interpretive agency to creatively adapt doctrine to their individual life circumstances. Considering the significant role of Church history in the religious choices and experiences of my consultants, I begin with a historical overview of Orthodox Christianity, from its origins in the Roman Empire to the present day, including its path to North America. The themes of empire, romantic nationalism, anti-Westernism, and Communism that have historically shaped this faith are explored specifically in Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine, the home countries of my Orthodox-born participants. I analyze the Orthodox Church’s response to globalization and how this may affect the future of the Church in North America.

    Theological Studies 50 (1989) NEW LIFE IN CHRIST: SALVATION IN ORTHODOX THEOLOGY JOHN MEYENDORFF St Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary, Crestwood, N.Y. RTHODOX THEOLOGY is, relatively speaking, a newcomer within the O fabric of contemporary theology in the West. It is being rediscovered today in the context of the ecumenical movement, but also—perhaps more importantly— in the framework of the "return to the sources," which characterized post-World War II Roman Catholicism in France and Germany. This "return" involved a revival of interest in the Eastern Fathers of the Church and the liturgy, as a living witness to the unbroken Tradition of early Christianity. Orthodox Christians indeed understand themselves as heirs of the Greek Fathers, and the liturgy has been for them the central and essential expression of the "catholic" nature of the Church. During the long centuries which followed the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Orthodox communities of the Middle East and the Balkans had practically no other means of learning about their faith and witnessing to their Chris­ tian commitment than the liturgy, but it proved to be powerful enough to keep those communities spiritually alive. In Russia, meanwhile, his­ torical circumstances delayed for long centuries the organic development of theological thought. It finally emerged into modernity within the framework of a Western school system and methodology, introduced in the 18th century by Peter the Great and adopted later in other Orthodox countries as well. I will begin this study by a brief overview of theological trends as they developed in the modern period. Such an introduction is necessary, I believe, to explain the picture of theological diversity and vitality char­ acteristic of Orthodoxy today and rarely noticed in the West, where interest in Eastern Christianity is limited to a few specialists.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course surveys the history of "Eastern" Christianity from late antiquity (age of the emperor Justinian) until the present day. The focus will be on the formation three characteristic components of Eastern Orthodox Christianity: institutions, liturgy and piety, and mysticism and theology. The focus will be on Greek Christianity in the earlier part of the course and Slavic Christianity in the later. Relations with the Christian west will also be considered. This semester DSPT will be completely distance learning due to the Coronavirus. Recordings of the lectures will be emailed to the class in time for the scheduled session, but may be listened to at any time before the arrival of the next lecture recording. Discussions will be by ZOOM meetings at the scheduled time. You will receive an invitation to log-in; do so 10 minutes before class time. If in-person classes resume at some piont in the semester we will return to sessions at DSPT. The couse will be approximately 35% Zoom sessions, 65% recorded lectures. Erickson On the Cusp of Modernity: The Canonical Hermeneutic of St Nikodemos the Haghiorite (1748–1809) St Vladimir’s Theological Quarterly 42-1 (1998) 45-66 It would be difficult to overestimate the impact which the Pedalion of St Nikodemos the Haghiorite (Leipzig 1800) has had on modern Orthodoxy, particularly in its Greek expression. Not only its text of the canons but also its commentaries, “harmonies” and extensive notes are widely regarded as authoritative. For example, in “traditionalist” circles, they are regularly invoked when issues like the reception of “converts” or the paschalia arise. Perhaps because such controversial issues are involved, scholars have been reluctant to examine the saint’s canonical hermeneutic. Systematic studies of his sources and editorial principles have yet to be undertaken. The observations which follow therefore am highly tentative in nature. They are offered in the hope that others will be encouraged— or perhaps provoked— to study this major figure more closely. So great is the importance of the Pedalion that it is easy to ignore the historical circumstances in which it was produced and, in turn, some of its intrinsic limitations. We sometimes are tempted to treat the Turkokratia (1453-1821) as though it constituted a single undifferentiated period. We ignore the many ways in which the institutions and religious ethos of the Byzantine world continued after 1453 in the rum millet, making it possible to speak of Byzance après Byzance— Byzantium after Byzantium. We also ignore the many important political, economic and even linguistic changes that transformed the Ottoman Empire and the rum millet in the century or so preceding the Greek War of Independence.
