ACQUIRING FAITH A Siberian Childhood by Nina Kartasheva The compelling story of a Soviet childhood through the eyes of a woman born to Orthodox exiles in the Ural town of Verkhoturye. Nina Kartasheva’s childhood recollections are offset by her account of a later critical illness and the miraculous intervention of the last Russian Royal Family. “The rule of faith and the model of meekness...” I’m reading, as I often do, the troparion to St. Nicholas and remembering the days of my childhood in the far-away Northern Urals, in Verkhoturye, where both my grandmoth- ers were exiled in the 30’s with their children, who afterwards became my parents. I appeared at a later, calmer time when there were no repressions and no one considered my grandmothers to be exiles. Under Krushchev, however, the attitude towards the faith again became blasphemous, to put it mildly, and intolerant if we choose to use harder and more truthful words. Despite everything, traditions were kept up in the old Russian families, along with religious practices and the faith itself. -

ICOANA CREDINȚEI No. 10, Year 5/2019 http://revistaicoanacredintei.com/ ISSN 2501-3386, ISSN-L 2393-137X https://doi.org/10.26520/icoana.2019.10.5.21-30 THE CONCEPT OF ”THE PRESENCE OF GOD”- A LINK BETWEEN MISSIONARY THEOLOGY AND CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY Prof. Ph.D. David PESTROIU, “Faculty of Orthodox Theology ,,Justinian the Patriarch”, University of Bucharest, ROMANIA, E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT In a world of religious and moral dissolution, in which nihilist atheism and hedonistic consumerism prevail, missionary theology must propose to the secularized human the experience of reunion with God as a means of restarting the religious experience manifested concretely through prayer and intense spiritual life. Modernity has obviously fuelled deified conceptions, isolating God in an inaccessible transcendence, and promoting a total abandonment of the possibility of experiencing any form of real encounter with Him. The only way to get in touch with Him was rational knowledge, as it was found in the Bible, or logical deductions resulting from the dialogue between theology and science. But they dangerously lead to the postmodern concept of a God-idea, concept, force, etc., lacking the attribute of personality. According to Orthodox doctrine, God has a personal character, being, more specifically, a Trinity of Persons. Therefore, we find enough biblical and patristic grounds, all testifying to the existence of divine Presence. This Personal Presence is the basis of promoting an intense spiritual life of the faithful human, who is aware of the necessity of an organic bond with it, creating a true state of communion. It is, on the one hand, a personal relationship cultivated by every person through prayer, but also an inter-personal relationship created within the public cult, especially in the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Mysteries of the Church. -

Divine Liturgy
THE SIGNIFICANCE AND MEANING OF THE LITURGY FOR OUR DAILY LIVES Philip Kariatlis For many Orthodox Christians today, the divine Liturgy is simply another service that they attend in order to fulfil their Christian duty - it is the proper thing to do - without it necessarily having any particular meaning for their everyday life. It is not something that they long to go to because of a real sense of personal joy that it gives to their life empowering them to face the daily challenges that they might encounter. Unfortunately, for many of our faithful - even though they are well- intentioned - in their most honest moments, the Liturgy has become a ‘joyless celebration’. It is often said, for example: “I don’t get anything out of the Service” and for this reason they feel a sense of frustration. Still others, will argue: “I consider myself a Christian but I don’t see why I need to go to Church every Sunday, if at all.” In all this, there is a real sense that, over time, our faithful have forgotten not only what the Liturgy is essentially all about, but equally importantly the significance of this celebration for their everyday life. Even the phrase that is often used, “I attend the Liturgy” shows that over time it has become misunderstood. Far from the Liturgy being a theatrical performance between priest and chanters at which the faithful are simply present, from the very beginning, even in its most primitive form as can be witnessed in the New Testament, the Eucharist was something that the faithful actively participated in, and not simply passively attended, an event that was personally enriching and powerfully transformative for their life. -

Prayer is a conversation with God that St. Thérèse of Lisieux described as “a surge of the heart.” Having a special place where parents and children gather to pray will go a long way toward helping you make prayer a regular part of your family life. Practice It! If you do not already have a dedicated place set aside for your family to pray, create a simple prayer space this month. Set up a “prayer corner” in your kitchen or family room on a mantel, a small table, or simply a special shelf in a bookcase. Add a crucifix, a candle, and an icon or two.
