ABSTRACT From the 1970s the emergence of religion and spirituality in psychoanalysis is a unique development, given its traditional pathologizing stance. This research examines how and why ‘sacred psychoanalysis’ came about and whether this represents a new analytic movement with definable features or a diffuse phenomena within psychoanalysis that parallels developments elsewhere. After identifying the research context, a discussion of definitions and qualitative reflexive methodology follows. An account of religious and spiritual engagement in psychoanalysis in the UK and the USA provides a narrative of key people and texts, with a focus on the theoretical foundations established by Winnicott and Bion. This leads to a detailed examination of the literary narratives of religious and spiritual engagement understood from: Christian; Natural; Maternal; Jewish; Buddhist; Hindu; Muslim; Mystical; and Intersubjective perspectives, synthesized into an interpretative framework of sacred psychoanalysis. -

PSYCHODYNAMIC PERSPECTIVES ON PERSONALITY This educational CAPPE module is part i in section III: Theories of Human Functioning and Spirituality Written by Peter L. VanKatwyk, Ph.D. Introduction Psychodynamic theory goes back more than 100 years and has been a principal influence in the early history of clinical pastoral education (CPE). It is a way of thinking about personality dynamics in interpreting and understanding both the spiritual care-provider and care-receiver. This module will briefly summarize the basic theory and punctuate psychodynamic concepts that have been significant in the study of psychology of religion and theological reflection in the practice of spiritual care and counselling. Psychodynamic theories presently practiced include in historical sequence the following three schools that will be covered in this module: 1. Ego Psychology, following and extending the classic psychoanalytic theory of Freud, with major representatives in Anna Freud, Heinz Hartmann and Erik Erikson. 2. Object Relations Theory, derived from the work of Melanie Klein and members of the “British School,” including those who are prominent in religious studies and the practice of spiritual care: Ronald Fairbairn, Harry Guntrip, and D.W. Winnicott. 3. Self Psychology, modifying psychoanalytic theory with an interpersonal relations focus, originating in Heinz Kohut, systematized and applied for social work and counselling practice by Miriam Elson. In conjunction these psychodynamic theories offer three main perspectives on personality: 1. the human mind harbors conflict – with powerful unconscious forces that are continually thwarted in expressing themselves by a broad range of counteracting psychological processes and defense mechanisms. 2. each person carries an unconscious internalized world of personal relationships – with mental representations that reflect earlier experiences of self and others which often surface as patterns in current relationships and interpersonal problems. -

The Case of Harry Guntrip

[1] Self-Punishment as Guilt Evasion: The Case of Harry Guntrip Donald L. Carveth Toronto Abstract A major contributor to the de-moralizing trend in post-Freudian and post-Kleinian psychoanalysis is Harry Guntrip. The guilt evasion that characterizes certain trends within contemporary psychoanalytic thought and the contemporary culture to which they have adapted mirrors that of Guntrip himself. Despite his background as a Christian minister and his years of analysis with two of the most creative analysts in the field, Guntrip managed by the end (in my hypothesis) only a paranoid understanding of himself as a victim of a murderous mother, rather than a man crippled by a need to punish himself for his disowned murderous wishes toward a brother who died and toward the mother he hated and blamed. In focusing upon the roots of the “schizoid problem” or the “disordered self” in defective early object- relations, Guntrip obscured entirely the role of guilt and the need for punishment in these conditions and promoted a cure based on reparative reparenting rather than analysis and resolution of inner conflict. It is now over three decades since Menninger (1973) asked Whatever Became of Sin? In so doing he drew attention to a de-moralizing trend in psychiatry and psychoanalysis mirroring that of the wider culture. Increasingly, it seems, we have come to reject Cassius’s conviction that “the fault … lies not in our stars, but in ourselves” (Julius Caesar, I, ii) in favor of that proto-narcissist Lear’s protestation that we are “more sinned against than sinning” (King Lear, III, ii). -
Black Excellence in School Psychology
Black Excellence in Psychology: Past and Present Pioneers in Psychology ALBERT SIDNEY BECKHAM (1897-1964) Dr. Beckham is considered to be the first African American school psychologist practicing in the Chicago Public Schools. He founded the first psychological laboratory at Howard University and published over 20 articles on the effect of counseling on high school students, childhood behavioral problems, intelligence testing and life satisfaction. Dr. Beckham brought together ministers whose parishes included families of students he was working with, allowing for the first time a church-neighborhood- school relationship in the community that benefited African American youth. Learn more about Dr. Beckham here FRANCIS CECIL SUMNER (1895-1954) Dr. Sumner was the first African American to receive his Ph.D. in Psychology. He helped establish the psychology department at Howard University to train African American psychologists. Dr. Sumner completed a vast amount of research that counteracted racism and bias in psychological studies of African Americans. Some of his students went on to become leading psychologists, including Dr. Kenneth Clark. Learn more about Dr. Sumner here INEZ BEVERLY PROSSER (1891-1934) Dr. Prosser was the first African American woman to receive her Ph.D. and the first black female psychologist. Her dissertation examined the academic development of African American children in mixed and segregated schools. Her findings showed that African American children fared better socially and academically in segregated schools. Specifically, Dr. Prosser found that African American children from integrated schools experienced more social maladjustment and felt less secure, a barrier to their learning, reaching controversial conclusions in the decades leading to the Brown v. -

Black psychologists grounded in a Black/African psychology tradition have long challenged the hegemonic paradigms and racist beliefs perpetuated by Eurocentric approaches to psychology. However, in the absence of teaching about the important contributions of Black/African psychology, many individuals remain unaware of its historical and contemporary impact on the discipline of psychology. Using the three methodological approaches of deconstruction, reconstruction, and construction as a framework, the authors identify the many ways in which Black/African psychology has challenged prevailing beliefs in psychology about Black behavior and culture and forever changed psychological research on Black people. Psychoanalytic Feminism and the Depiction of Women in Surrealist Photography Katherine Bottinelli1 and Susan Laxton2 1 Department of Pyschology 2 Department of the History of Art ABSTRACT Katherine Bottinelli Surrealism, an art movement of the early twentieth century, was heavily influenced by psychoanalysis. The psychoanalytic theories that influenced Surrealism were based primarily on the research of Department of Psychology Sigmund Freud. Freud’s research began with case studies on patients with hysteria, a predominantly Katherine Bottinelli is a fourth-year female diagnosed mental disorder . From his clinical observations of hysteria, Freud developed Psychology major and Art History minor. his theories on unconscious drives and psychosexual development . André Breton, the leader of the Surrealist movement, first became acquainted with Freud’s ideas during the First World War. During her Winter 2018 quarter at UCR, After his return to France from the war, Breton’s interest in avant-garde art and distaste for Europe’s she developed an interest in Surrealism high culture led him to start the Surrealist movement . Breton declared psychoanalysis the basis of while taking Dr. Susan Laxton’s Surrealism in the First Manifesto of Surrealism, believing that Freud’s ideas had the potential to revolutionize culture . The Heresy of African-Centered Psychology

Kwate1 This paper contends that African-centered models of psychopathology represent a heretical challenge to orthodox North American Mental Health. Heresy is the defiant rejection of ideology from a smaller community within the orthodoxy. African-centered models of psychopathology use much of the same language and ideas about the diagnostic process as Western psychiatry and clinical psychology but explicitly reject the ideological foundations of illness definition. The nature of the heretical critique is discussed, and implications for the future of this school of thought are offered. For some time, African American scholars have written about the need to incorporate issues of race and culture into the practice of psychology. 2 In addition, some psychologists have applied cultural concepts to specific groups within the Diaspora, such as Caribbean Americans.3 Initially, there was a great deal of resis- tance to accepting these ideas. Indeed, psychological models of theory and practice that emphasize cultural concepts regarding African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, and Native Americans are still not considered “mainstream,” but rather, “ethnic minority psychology.” However, over time, these challenges to the orthodoxy have been tolerated within what Wolpe calls a controlled cultural space for noncomformist thought.4 1Address correspondence to Naa Oyo A. Griffith1 Abstract Aggregating and interpreting available qualitative data is a necessary next step to understanding the mental health needs and experiences of Black men. This study describes the findings from a meta-synthesis of qualitative research on Black men’s mental health and well-being using Paterson, Thorne, Canam, and Jillings’s qualitative meta-study approach. Though previous studies have reported various forms of racism as salient concerns for Black men’s mental health and well-being, findings from this meta-study revealed seven themes that present an initial step toward advancing the knowledge pertaining to how Black men perceive and express their mental health and well-being. -

THE CHILD ANALYTIC TRADITION OF THE SOCIETY OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY – BIRTH, DEATH AND BEYOND MELISSA JANE MIDGEN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of East London for the degree of Professional Doctorate in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy December 2016 i Abstract This thesis seeks to chart the creation, development and eventual demise of the child analytic training of The Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), the foremost Jungian Society in the UK. The brainchild of the Society’s founding director, Michael Fordham, the creation of the child training drew on the talents and persistence of many committed individuals. Through oral history interviews and archival research I weave together a narrative that will serve as testament to this achievement and offer first hand recollections for posterity. Through these sources the narrative also explores the difficulties that the training faced and which ultimately led to its eventual demise. Additionally I interrogate the current status of this tradition of child analysis and ask the question whether or not the tradition continues to exist and if so in what ways; I conclude that currently the tradition can only be said to exist in an attenuated form and that the future is bleak. In the course of the thesis I locate the SAP training within the development more generally of child analytic provision within the UK, the relationship of that to the child guidance movement and to the psychoanalytic diaspora, which made it possible. I describe the current obstacles faced by the child psychotherapy discipline as well as psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the NHS.
