SUMMARY The endosymbionts of Paramecium aurelia appear to consist of a number of different Gram- negative bacteria which have come to live within many strains of paramecia. It is not known whether in nature this relationship is mutually beneficial or not. The symbionts from one paramecium may kill other paramecia lacking that kind of symbiont. We identify the following classes of endosymbiotic organisms. First, kappa particles (found in P. aurelia, syngens 2 and 4) ordinarily contain highly characteristic refractile, or R, bodies, which are associated with the production of a toxin which kills sensitive paramecia. In certain mutants of kappa found in the laboratory both R bodies and ability to kill have been lost. Second, mu particles (in syngens i, 2 and 8) produce the phenomenon of mate-killing. Third, lambda (syngens 4 and 8) and sigma particles (syngen 2) are very large, flagellated organisms which kill only paramecia of syngens 3, 5 and 9, and are enclosed in membrane-bound vacuoles. Fourth, gamma particles (syngen 8) are minute endosymbionts, surrounded by an additional membrane resembling endoplasmic reticulum. They have strong killing activity but no R bodies. Fifth, delta particles (syngens 1 and 6) possess a dense layer covering the outer membrane. At least one of the two known stocks is a killer. -

We see that the recently proposed genera Neoapodemia Trujano, 2018 and Plesioarida Trujano & García, 2018 are closely allied with Apodemia C. & R. Felder, [1865] and are better viewed as its subgenera, new status. Overall, Emesis Fabricius, 1807 and Apodemia (even after inclusion of the two subgenera) are so phylogenetically close that several species have been previously swapped between these two genera. New combinations are: Apodemia (Neoapodemia) zela (Butler, 1870), Apodemia (Neoapodemia) ares (Edwards, 1882), and Apodemia (Neoapodemia) arnacis (Stichel, 1928) (not Emesis); and Emesis phyciodoides (Barnes & Benjamin, 1924) (not Apodemia), assigned to each genus by their monophyly in genomic trees with the type species (TS) of the genus. -

I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013). -

Cover In 1693, the French Académie des Sciences introduced a new, supposedly more rational system for categorising letterforms and constructing them according to an underlying grid. This was employed in the design of Romain du Roi, a new typeface for Louis XIV’s royal printer. The grid-engraved plates, on which the ‘B’ on the cover is based, were produced to demonstrate the typeface’s geometrical construction at a time when letterforms were generally derived from stylised handwriting. -

First observations of Mormon Metalmark (Apodemia mormo ) oviposition behaviour in Canada. Canadian Field-Naturalist 126(1): 3 4–37. We present new information on oviposition behaviour in the Mormon Metalmark, Apodemia mormo Felder and Felder, 1859 , documented in Grasslands National Park of Canada, Saskatchewan, in August 2011. The Mormon Metalmark is found through - out the U.S. southwest; little is known about its life history in the northern populations found in Canada. We provide photo - graphic documentation of the butterfly laying single eggs directly on soil or rocks. These observations differ from those recorded in the southern part of its range, where it lays eggs in groups of 2–4 on various locations of the host plant, Branched Umbrella- Plant, Eriogonum pauciflorum Pursh. This is the first published account of oviposition behaviour of this species in Canada in the most northern part of its range. Butowsky Historian, History Division National Park Service, Washington, DC The Geology National Historic Landmark Theme Study represents the second phase of the National Park Service's thematic study of the history of American science. Phase one of this study, Astronomy and Astrophysics: A National Historic Landmark Theme Study was completed in l989. Subsequent phases of the science theme study will include the disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and other related sciences. The Science Theme Study is being completed by the National Historic Landmarks Survey of the National Park Service in compliance with the requirements of the Historic Sites Act of l935. The Historic Sites Act established "a national policy to preserve for public use historic sites, buildings and objects of national significance for the inspiration and benefit of the American people." Under the terms of the Act, the service is required to survey, study, protect, preserve, maintain, or operate nationally significant historic buildings, sites & objects. The National Historic Landmarks Survey of the National Park Service is charged with the responsibility of identifying America's nationally significant historic property. The survey meets this obligation through a comprehensive process involving thematic study of the facets of American History. In recent years, the survey has completed National Historic Landmark theme studies on topics as diverse as the American space program, World War II in the Pacific, the US Constitution, recreation in the United States and architecture in the National Parks. -

The dataset published herein contains the label data for all North American specimens of Lycaenidae and Riodinidae residing at the Oregon State Arthropod Collection as of March 2019. A beta version of these data records will be made available on the OSAC server (http://osac.oregonstate.edu/IPT) at the time of this publication. The beta version will be replaced in the near future with an official release (version 1.0), which will be archived as a supplemental file to this paper. Methods Basic digitization protocols and metadata standards can be found in (Shepard et al. 2018). Identifications were confirmed by Jon Shepard and Paul Hammond prior to digitization. Nomenclature follows that of (Pelham 2008). Results The holdings in these two families are extensive. Combined, they make up 25,743 specimens (24,598 Lycanidae and 1145 Riodinidae). -
