Dear Parishioners, “For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd.” This Fourth Sunday of the Easter Season is called Good Shepherd Sunday. Every year the scriptures focus on Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The above quote is taken from this weekend’s second reading from the Letter of St. Peter. As a shepherd leads his flock, protects his flock, loves his flock, so is Jesus, our shepherd, the one who leads, guides and protects. During this stressful time, we need the Good Shepherd! This focus got me thinking of the people that “shepherd” me. I am sure we all have people who in a sense shepherd us, who bring the best out of us, that can be honest with us. Dear Parishioners, “Talitha koum, I say to you arise!” Jesus’ command to the daughter of Jairus who died, inspires us to recall that the Lord is always calling us to new life. The Gospels each week recall the life-giving powers of Our Lord. Again, and again, out of the grip of sin, evil and death, the Lord invites us to begin anew. It happens when we receive the Eucharist, it happens when we go to confession, it happens when we confront our own sinfulness. It was indeed a profound moment when our Lord brought that little girl back to life. This sense of being born anew is very much in the air as we heal and recover from the pandemic. The clarion call in parish life these days is, “Welcome Back!” It uplifts me every weekend as I see more Jerry Boland, Pastor and more people returning to Mass. I feel we are so blessed. We have gradually been expanding our Mass options. We are now at full capacity. Next weekend we will restore the 7:30 am Mass and on July 12 we will restore the 6:30 am Mass. The restoration of the 6:30 am Mass will require some patience. The priests, like you, have not been able take vacations in almost 2 years. We have quite a backlog of funerals and weddings (13 on the board) right now.

Our world is a changing one. As we look at the world that our present students will inherit, we know that they will live in communities and participate in workplaces that are increasingly a mix of cultures, races, creeds, and values. We can see that technology will offer more and more information, and perhaps less and less analysis. We can envision a furthering of environmental degradation and depletion of the planet’s resources. And we anticipate that growing financial and educational gaps between and among different constituents in our societies will lead to even more political and social strife and upheaval around our worlds. Fundamentally, all education is about preparing students for their own future. It is about helping them become critical thinkers who can absorb and create new knowledge. It is about giving them the skills to lead and serve in the world they’re going to inhabit—in a world that will need their leadership. When Jesuits started educating children 450 years ago in Messina, Sicily, it was at the request president’S of the town’s merchant class.
