Thirteenth Sunday June 27, 2021 in Ordinary Time “Talitha koum, I say to you ARISE!” Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish 1775 Grove St. Glenview IL 60025 Parish Office 847-729-1525 olphglenview.org seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter... Dear Parishioners, “Talitha koum, I say to you arise!” Jesus’ command to the daughter of Jairus who died, inspires us to recall that the Lord is always calling us to new life. The Gospels each week recall the life-giving powers of Our Lord. Again, and again, out of the grip of sin, evil and death, the Lord invites us to begin anew. It happens when we receive the Eucharist, it happens when we go to confession, it happens when we confront our own sinfulness. It was indeed a profound moment when our Lord brought that little girl back to life. This sense of being born anew is very much in the air as we heal and recover from the pandemic. The clarion call in parish life these days is, “Welcome Back!” It uplifts me every weekend as I see more Jerry Boland, Pastor and more people returning to Mass. I feel we are so blessed. We have gradually been expanding our Mass options. We are now at full capacity. Next weekend we will restore the 7:30 am Mass and on July 12 we will restore the 6:30 am Mass. The restoration of the 6:30 am Mass will require some patience. The priests, like you, have not been able take vacations in almost 2 years. We have quite a backlog of funerals and weddings (13 on the board) right now. There may be some days when we will need to celebrate a communion service rather than a Mass because of the number of liturgies that need to take place that day or there are challenges with the number of priests available. We will be restoring Friday Adoration and Benediction on Fridays. Other adjustments will be considered later in the summer. Due to the success of our “tent” masses, we will have a rectory lawn mass on July 4 at 10:00 am. We will continue the Drive-In Masses for the time being. It provides a safe option for those unvaccinated or not comfortable worshipping indoors. Summer is the time we tackle major projects to minimize interfering with parish activity. We are replacing the roofs over the sacristy and old baptistry that were in bad shape. We will be resealing the parking lot. We do a major cleaning of all the floors. The Church carpet will be repaired and cleaned. We have a punch list of masonry repairs, electrical issues and painting projects that will keep Mike Hrvojevic and our maintenance staff quite busy. I am so grateful to Mike and his staff for the extraordinary job they do keeping our campus in great shape. The campus has bever looked better. One of the joys of moving beyond COVID is the prospect of traveling. We have had a great tradition of parish pilgrimages that have taken us all over the world. We had to cancel two of our trips because of the pandemic but I am delighted to announce a new trip! We will be headed to Austria, Croatia, Italy and Oberammergau June 26 - July 6, 2022. From Vienna to Zagreb to Ljubljana to Venice to the Passion Play. It will be a great time. We were supposed to do this trip last year, but it is now rescheduled and there are openings. If you are interested, please call the office and we will send you a brochure. Congratulations to Fr. Larry Basbas who marks his first anniversary as a priest on Tuesday, June 29. What a year to begin priestly ministry. Fr. Larry, you are a “blessing” to us. Basbas means blessing in the Filipino language. Movie night with the teens was great! Thanks to Fr. Patrick, Zoe Sundstrom and our teen leaders. The future looks bright for our outreach to our teens. Thanks to Margaret Waldron and our Religious Education catechists for the heroic efforts to celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Between making up for last year’s canceled celebrations and celebrating this year’s celebrations, we had 33 separate celebrations due to COVID protocols. WOW! What an undertaking to make sure we celebrated, with joy, these milestones in our children’s lives and to keep everyone safe. Thank-you! I was deeply humbled to hear that I am being awarded the 2021 Zanoni Award. I feel honored and grateful. There could not be a parish more supportive of its pastor. I also am honored to join the Hicks awardees, Rob Orr and Jim Geldermann who were heroic in launching our virtual ministry. Also, I am deeply honored to join last year’s recipients, Bill Riordan, the Zanoni awardee and the late Paul D’Amore and Sally Corbett, the Hicks awardees. They could not be honored last year because of the pandemic. May your week be blessed! Fr.
