To be precise, I am the Church of the God of Light’s Sun Knight. The Church of the God of Light worships and serves the God of Light, and theirs is one of the three largest religions on this continent. As the whole continent knows, the Church of the God of Light has twelve holy knights and each one has his own unique personality and features. To be the Sun Knight is to have shining golden hair, sky blue eyes, a compassionate nature, and a brilliant smile. “The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.” I must have said that line at least a million times in my time as the Sun Knight. However, the greatest wish in my life is to be able to stand before the entire continent and roar, “Damn your ‘the whole continent knows’! This Sun Knight just doesn’t feel like smiling! I just don’t want to forgive these human trashes! I just want to pepper my sentences with ‘f***’!” Unfortunately, even to this day, I continue to wear a smile as I say, “The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.” About the Author Yu Wo: Who am I? Sometimes I am like a warrior, wielding a sword on the battlefield, with limitless passion and energy. At other times, I resemble a mage, with a mind devoted to research, completely absorbed in the things I like. Or I might be like a thief, leading a free and easy life, letting fate lead me to distant and unfamiliar lands. Occasionally, however, I am similar to a priest, with that gentle heart, filled with compassion towards the livings things of this world. On this continent, “god” is not a flimsy, dubious entity or a name that one uses only when yelling for help. Gods are real, and a number of them exist. Some gods are extremely weak. Of course, when we say “weak”, we mean by the standards of the gods. Other gods are exceedingly strong. As the strength of a god is largely derived from the piety of the god’s believers, the number of believers is often the crucial factor determining how strong or how weak a god is. As such, the gods often resemble gangsters fighting over territory as they desperately attempt to extend the influence of their own religions. However, if in order to extend their religions’ influence, the gods were to carelessly use their powers on the continent and end up conflicting with other gods, it wouldn’t be too long before the entire continent disappeared from existence entirely. In order to avoid such a situation, the mightiest gods among them all established “the Contract of the Gods”. All of the gods were thus forbidden from directly using their divine powers on the continent itself. Their only option was to invest their powers in some of their followers, who would then wield that power in their stead. In this way, the multitude of religions began to flourish. 8 | P r o l o g u e The Legend of Sun Knight Volume 1 | An Introduction to Knight Theory | by Yu Wo One of the best-known faiths of all is that of the God of Light’s, under the jurisdiction of the Church of the God of Light. Although the Church of the God of Light is no longer as renowned and influential as it used to be due to the growing influence of the God of War and the Shadow God, it is still as they say: a dead camel is still bigger than a horse.

In broad usage, the term Sino-Korean refers to Chinese loanwords in Korean, but in this dissertation, it is used for a phonological system of Chinese-character readings (or pronunciation) derived from Middle Chinese. Although most sound correspondences between Sino-Korean and Middle Chinese are quite regular, some phonological features of Middle Chinese have been adopted irregularly into Sino-Korean, and Sino-Korean (SK) readings with aspiration discrepancy are part of this broader phenomenon of irregular SK readings. It is generally assumed that both the Chinese and Korean languages had voiceless aspirated stops and voiceless unaspirated stops at the time Chinese characters were adopted in the Korean peninsula. If that is indeed the case, a regular correspondence between Middle Chinese (MC) and SK is expected between the two languages. However, there are many cases where the aspiration feature shows irregular correspondence. In China there have never been any strict linguistic rules concerning the gender-specific differentiation of given names, as the Chinese language does not have a grammatical gender, and the gender usually is a covert category. However, there is a group of given names strictly complying with the most common naming convention, i.e. that a name overtly indicates the sex of the person named. These are Chinese female given names with “female” terms written in characters with the graphical marker of “femininity”, and male names with typical “male” terms, especially general terms for men, terms of address, kinship and rank. In most cases the occurrence of such a term in a name indicates that the bearer of the name is a woman or a man. The cases of the inverse use of the terms reveal the additional significance of such formed names, as commendatory or counter-commendatory names. ***** Introduction The meaningfulness of names plays an important social and cultural role in the Chinese naming system. Given names are formed individually, and they are mostly semantically transparent.     15 A Comparison of the Korean and Japanese Approaches to Foreign Family Names JIN Guanglin* Abstract There are many foreign family names in Korean and Japanese genealogies. This paper is especially focused on the fact that out of approximately 280 Korean family names, roughly half are of foreign origin, and that out of those foreign family names, the majority trace their beginnings to China. In Japan, the Newly Edited Register of Family Names (新撰姓氏錄), published in 815, records that out of 1,182 aristocratic clans in the capital and its surroundings, 326 clans—approximately one-third—originated from China and Korea. Does the prevalence of foreign family names reflect migration from China to Korea, and from China and Korea to Japan? Or is it perhaps a result of Korean Sinophilia (慕華思想) and Japanese admiration for Korean and Chinese cultures? Or could there be an entirely distinct explanation? First I discuss premodern Korean and ancient Japanese foreign family names, and then I examine the formation and characteristics of these family names. Next I analyze how migration from China to Korea, as well as from China and Korea to Japan, occurred in their historical contexts. Through these studies, I derive answers to the above-mentioned questions.
