An analysis of the uniquely detailed account books of the two Bruges guilds, the archers of St Sebastian and the crossbowmen of St George, reveals much about their social activities, and especially their annual meals. Feasts were important to the guilds in three main ways. Firstly, they demonstrated the guild’s status and wealth. Secondly, meals helped to strengthen the bonds of the community. The guild’s community could include not just members resident in Bruges, but also shooters from other towns and even leading noblemen. Thirdly, and in contrast to this, communal meals were an occa- sion to exhibit the hierarchy present within these guilds. Crombie / Journal of Medieval History 37 (2011) 102–113 103 maintained a population of over 36,000.2 As befitting a city with such cultural and economic promi- nence, Bruges had a strong festive tradition, many elements of which have been studied.3 The procession of the Holy Blood, in which a vial said to contain Christ’s blood was carried around the city walls, was one of the most famous in the Low Countries.4 Richer townsmen took part in the urban jousts of the White Bear,5 while religious organisations catered to all levels of Bruges society.6 Bruges was also the setting for noble celebrations: most famously, Charles the Bold’s marriage to Margaret of York in 1468 presented a spectacle John Paston compared to the court of King Arthur.7 The guilds of archers and crossbowmen, ostensibly founded for civic defence, were another important part of Bruges’ vibrant civic culture, but have received far less attention from historians.8 The origins of the archery and crossbow guilds of Bruges are unclear, but may go back to the late thirteenth-century militia.9 Over the fourteenth century the two communities, the archers of St Sebastian and the crossbowmen of St George, became important social groups. They received privileges, owned lands, and had their own chapels dedicated to their patron saints, all of which helped to make the guilds two of the most influential civic groups. The archers of St Sebastian and the crossbowmen of St George both kept account books. The crossbowmen’s accounts begin in 1445, with a gap from 1465 to 1470, and become fragmentary from 1481.10 A separate membership list was kept from 1437.11 The archers’ accounts survive in four registers, covering 1454–6, 1460–5, 1465–72 and 1472–81. The last two of these, however, are incomplete.12 The accounts of both guilds provide great insight into guild life, membership and devotional activities, as well as the guilds’ annual meals, which are the focus of the present paper. Both guilds held two annual meals, one on their patronal saint’s day, and another following their annual shooting competition, known as the papegay. The feasts of the Bruges shooting guilds can be analysed to demonstrate how meals were simul- taneously used to show status, create community and emphasise hierarchy. Firstly meals, especially 2 P. Lecturer in History, Coloma Training College, Wickham Court THE manor of West Wickham in Kent came into the hands of the Heydon family of Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, in the latter years of the fifteenth century. The Heydons, a family which could be classed among the lesser gentry in the earlier part of the century, were in the ascendant in the social scale. The accumulation of manors was a sign of prosperity, and many hitherto obscure families were climbing into prominence by converting the wealth they had obtained through lucrative legal posts into real estate. The story of the purchase of West Wickham by the Heydons and of its sale by them just over a century later provides a useful example of the varying fortunes of a family of the gentry at this date, for less is known about the gentry as a class than of the nobility. John Heydon had prospered as a private lawyer, and his son Henry was the first of the family to be knighted. Henry's father made a good match for him, marrying him into the house of Boleyn, or Bullen, a family which was advancing even more rapidly to prominence. The lady chosen was a daughter of Sir Geoffrey Boleyn, a wealthy mercer who, in 1457, was elected Lord Mayor of London. Sir Geoffrey's grandson married Elizabeth Howard, a daughter of the Duke of Norfolk; his great-granddaughter, Henry Heydon's great-niece, was to be queen of England.

H We know little of many who were once great in the earth, and still less of the life of the people in their times. The life of the past must be visualized by piecing together detached and scattered fragments from many sources. The result is a composite picture, not a portrait. It is only now and then that the student of history is able to penetrate be- hind the veil of obscurity and get glimpses of intimate per- sonal life and learn to know the men and women of the past with some degree of acquaintance. A rare opportunity to know English provincial life in the fifteenth century is afforded in that wonderful collection known as “The Paston Letters.” This familiar correspond- ence of a Norfolk family, whose position was that of small gentry, covers three generations in some of the most stirring years of English history. It was the age when England’s empire in France was wrested from her by Joan of Arc; the age when the white rose of York and the red rose of Lan- caster were dyed a common color on the battlefields of Barnet, Towton, Wakefield Heath, and Bosworth Field. It was the century of W’arwick the kingmaker, and Henry Tudor ; of Sir Thomas More’s birth and of Caxton’s “Game of Chess.” The intense human interest of these letters has command- ed the admiration of readers ever since John Fenn edited 116 Rural Life in XV Century England 117 them, or those then known, in 1787.

Public Record Office Most English estates and businesses in the later Middle Ages would have been run less efficiently with.ollt the active cooperation of the master's lady. Many proved quite capable of running the entire enterprise when deprived either temporarily or pennanently of their husbands. As the other papers in this collection have indicated, many medieval women were as competent and as determined as their twentieth century counterparts. Yet there was one essential difference. The independent legal rights of a medieval wife were nonexistent and only as a widow was a woman able to exercise some control over her property and her future. While her husband was alive the two were regarded as one being in law. For most women thi s was merely academic, but the wife of a man convicted of treason might, at worst, find herself left with little more than her life and the gown she stood up in. The full rigours of the law were usually modified, but the degree of modification often depended on the amount of influence a wife or widow could bring to bear. It was arbitrary and could never be wholly relied upon. This paper is intended to illustrate the basic weakness of a woman's position if the male members of her family were charged with treason. To salvage as much of the family property as she could, she needed to influence the king in her favour and to do that she really needed the support of a politically powerful man.

Though the Manor-of Hintlesham played an important part in the 'social life of East Anglia centuries ago, and its owners held a distinguished position contemporaneous records contain surprisingly few references to it. The publications of our own Institute only incidentally mention it ; hence it is with a sense of satisfaction that we are able to present our readers with a detailed account of the principal events connected with its past history. The main Manor of Hintlesham consisted of twO moieties now presented by the. " Hall " and the " Old Hall." -The.former is the holding occupied by the Pipard family during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Extents of the manor taken in their time shoW that a capital messuage than existed, and the author would suggest that the original manor-house of the Pipards occupied the ,site of the present " Hintlesham," and was enclosed by what is now the outer of the two moats which can still be clearly traced. The ihner moat seems to have been made for the protection of the later building. The house as we see it to-day, though altered from time to time, presents a fine specimen of the recognised type of Elizabethan mansion.. It was built by Thomas Timperley, 1570-80, and in it were incor- porated some of the earlier buildings. At the back 1 incorporated with the paper read by Mr. Corder, 20th July, 1912, are the results of further research carried out since that date by Sir Gerald Ryan, with the assistance of Miss L.

However, those of a higher status often had more autonomy, especially in the case of their husbands’ absences. These women were expected to take care of their everyday duties as well as those of their absent husbands. In the case of Margaret Paston, the daughter of John Mautby and wife of John Paston, she endured the absence of her husband throughout the majority of their marriage. Margaret often dealt with very important men of the community, her children, her extended family, and her neighbors on issues that were thought to be much more suited for a man. The letters written between Margaret and John Paston show the abundance of responsibilities placed on a woman in her husband’s absence. Margaret was responsible for her duties, such as caring for her children and the household, but she was also responsible for the large estate and many tenants that John acquired. Marriage between noblemen and women was often a political tool, and often was motivated by social improvement and economic gain. Parents arranged the marriages of their children largely to benefit the status and position of their family.1 John Paston, son of William Paston, a well-to-do lawyer, was an undergraduate at Peterhouse in Cambridge when his father arranged his marriage to Margaret Mautby, who was the sole heir to her father’s wealth.

    .The Wives of Sir James Hobart (1440—1517), Attorney-General1486—1507 JOHN B. WELLER My thesis is that Sir James Hobart had four wives, not three as normally stated. Genealogical sources are contradictory and this has caused confusion. Second, as a corollary of his marriages, acting as a catalyst, James lived for much of his life towards the eastern coast of East Anglia. Thus, the context of both his marriages and his homes needs to be discussed. James was the younger brother of William, both sons of Thomas Hobart.‘ At the time of their birth, various family members held property in the adjoin- ing Suffolk parishes of Lindsey, Milden and Monks Eleigh, lying between the cloth market towns of Hadleigh and Lavcnham. Thomas held the only house in the short Gedford Street, north of the bridge in Monks Eleigh, and facing the forge. The site of the forge is now under a road junction but part of the house still‘ stands.2 William, like his father, became a local merchant and member of the Hadleigh Guild of Clothmakers. James, in 1458, when aged eighteen, was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn.3 This was to change the fortune and status of the family. James, by 1463,was in Sir John Howard’s household at Stoke-by-Nayland about nine miles south of Gedford. The Paston family Most people have heard of the Pastons and their letters but it may help to set out their story. On the surface, they are a fifteenth-century success story, rising from being small landowners at best to being a successful and wealthy gentry family in Norfolk. John Paston III being knighted after the Battle of Stoke by Henry VII seems to top off that rise to riches and influence. However, their story had many twists and turns, and at the heart of it is their struggle to retain their status as gentry and their lands when local rivals saw opportunities to take over Paston estates, by legal means or by force. In brief, William Paston, a lawyer and judge, built up their lands though the money he made as a lawyer, but his death left his young, inexperienced heir, John I, struggling to fight off rivals who claimed to be the real owners of the lands that William had bought.
