Kevin Walsh, Flotilla Commander

Congratulations to Aaron Abb for certifying for Boat Crew, and to David Cornelius for re-certifying on July 24th. You both contribute mightily to this organization in many ways, operationally, administratively and fellowship-wise. Thank you for all you do and thank your families for the time you dedicate to this organization. Thanks for your dedication and commitment. Thanks also, to everyone who worked hard in support of this QE. This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum, We had to have two boats and two crews to make this happen. Without Tom Every and Bodge Hyatt on the PY2 and Pamela Wik-Grimm and Gary Zdan on the Avalon we could not have accomplished getting these crew members on the water. Mark Lewis worked untold hours under some fairly unusual circumstances trying to make this happen.

To add to an already full day, crews dealt with a SAR case on a sinking personal watercraft, and a partially sunk boat involving a hazmat response.

You demonstrated your skill, training, flexibility and devotion to public safety that day. Thanks to all.

Congratulations again to Aaron Abb for attaining Qualified Crew status, and to Dave Cornelius for re-certifying!

As FC Walsh pointed out, a lot of work went into readiness for the July 24 QE.

Just one of the preparations was the underway training patrol held July 17, 2021. Pictured here is a side-tow evolution. Aboard the Penn Yan 2 were Coxswain Tom Every with crew Bodge Hyatt, Aaron Abb and Tim Kerstetter (of Flotilla 0920204, Oswego). Aboard the Avalon were Coxswain Mark Lewis with crew David Cornelius, Gary Zdan, Tommy Lacey, Peter Wiles (Flotilla 0920201, Syracuse) and Robert Vanderhook (Flotilla 0531503, Wilkes Barre PA).

Patrol orders and QEs had to be arranged, Bloodborne Pathogen training and COVID forms had to completed, facility equipment repaired and readied, more cleats bolted to the refurbished docks…so many details!

A tip of the hat also to Bruce Ressner, who is well on his way to completing Culinary Service training. (See below.)

The current CS (Culinary Service) qualification process

Bruce Ressner

[Bruce submitted the following summary of training for Culinary Service, formerly known as Food Service. It’s a reminder of the dedication required of new members such as Bruce himself who take up this challenge. – DR]

1) Basic CGAUX qualification courses, 2) Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness course from AUXLMS, 3) Introduction to Risk Management and Sanitation courses with NTC exams, 4) Primary Care Physician sign off on fitness for duty with HEP A vaccination (and booster in 6-12 months),

Then you are ready to take the… 5) Virtual CGAUX instructor lead CS course: 5 weekday sessions via Zoom (2-2.5 hours each), there is only 1 course set up for mid-August this year.

This qualifies you to cook for CGAUX events, but to cook for active CG… 6) it is then required to do 12 hours supervised galley work at a CG installation with Petty Officer administered practicum exam.

Summertime Activities: During the summer, members of Ship 25 focus their time on the water. We’ve been sailing multiple times, trying to get on the water every week, weather permitting. Katie Quinn worked around the storms to hold her quartermaster cruise. This is a 40 hour event including two nights on the boat along with a bunch of other maneuvers and other activities. We held drills including man overboard, abandon Ship and others. Upcoming we have a schedule that includes further times out sailing and motor boating to take advantage of the boating season this summer.

Training: The Ship held an initial meeting for our new Boatswain and Boatswain Mates to organize our upcoming calendar which can be seen on the link from ithacaseascouts.org, plus we held Quarterdeck training which is the orientation for our whole new slate of youth officers. Meanwhile, we have youth participating in advanced leadership training events including the SEAL program out of both San Francisco and Seattle (Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership Training), plus NAYLE (National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience) at ’s Philmont Scout in .

Awards: Congratulations to Ben Ashbaugh for earning the rank of Summit through our sister Scouting unit Venturing Crew 25. The is Venturing’s equivalent of Eagle in Scouts BSA or Quartermaster in Sea Scouts.

Contact: Sea Scouts is a co-ed program for young men and women ages 13-20. Prior to COVID-19, Sea Scout Ship 25 met at 6:30pm most Friday nights at the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Ithaca, NY. Currently, meetings are online or attendance-restricted with distancing requirements. During the summer, our focus is getting outside and doing on-the-water adventures as much as possible. For more details contact Committee Chairman Jim Graney at 607-327-1226 (work/cell) or email [email protected]. Additional information and a copy of Ship 25’s meeting and activity calendar are available at www.ithacaseascouts.org.
