As the ChIP In Auxiliary play such an important role in providing essential funds for a variety of things including the annual camp I would like to introduce them to you. The ChIP In Auxiliary for 2009 is as follows: Chairperson: Jessica O’Dowd Vice-Chairperson: Leah Stuart Secretary: Jenny Balnaves Treasurer: John Fincher Auxiliary Members: Di Fincher, Wendy Stuart, Jan Spiteri, Charlotte Ballan, Loretta Bellato, Jordan Hammond, Stacey Cumming This year the ChIP In Auxiliary are hoping to organise a number of fundraising events. We need the support of ChIPPERS and their family and friends to help make these events fun and profit- able! All of the events will be advertised through the newsletter so make sure you look for these notices. Some events may also be advertised on the website and/or from time to time you may receive correspondence via email or post. BY Beth Sleeman Some possible activities that we are hoping to run for this year include: Car Scavenger Hunt Movie Night at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville – June Shopping Tour – October/November Chocolate Drive ChIPS Gala Ball Saturday 15th August 2009 A major fundraising event for this year will be the ChIPS Gala Ball. The date has been set and a venue will be confirmed shortly. Please stay tuned for further information. Page 3 Geri’s Starlight Diary In November of last year I was having a pretty grim time. It was nearly five months since I'd seen my doctor and I seriously needed the dose of one of my medications increased. I was alternating between sleeping too much and not at all. The de- pression was a lot worse than usual. Following the advice of other chippers I decided to email Kristen about it. The re- sponse I got was most surprising. Kristen asked me if I would be interested in a referral to the Starlight Children's Founda- tion, for those who may not know what this is, it is a wish-granting programme for children up to the age of 21 with chronic illness or disability. My first reaction was confused. I had never considered myself to be eligible for anything like it, but after I spoke with my parents about it I started to think otherwise. I am a prime candidate for the "well you don't look sick" jabs that could not possibly be more wrong. I have not one, but two, very rare afflictions. One is life threatening, that causes my severe fatigue, anaphylaxis, low blood pressure, abdominal pain and psychological issues. The other caused some moderate deformation before I was born, resulting in some perma- nent deafness, terrible eyesight, the speed with which my brain sorts information and some deformity to my face (many would disagree on this but if you compare my face with those of my family you'd find there is little resemblance.) In short, not only am I too ill to commit to a job or a class but I also have learning difficulties that hinder my actual ability to study.

Transcript: Song & Music in the Movement A Conversation with Candie Carawan, Charles Cobb, Bettie Mae Fikes, Worth Long, Charles Neblett, and Hollis Watkins, September 19 – 20, 2017. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing.

  • 1 Amazing Grace
1Amazing Grace BY JOHN NEWTON 1. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I’m free. 2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fear relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares We have already come; 'Twas grace that brought us safe thus far, And grace will lead us on. 4. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we’d first begun. 5. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I'm free. 2Just aCloser Walk With Thee TRADITIONAL 1. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea; Daily walking close with Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. 2. Through the days of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. 3. When my feeble life is o'er Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely on To thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore. 4. I am weak, but Thou art strong. Jesus, keep me from all wrong. I'll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

  • Rosenstock-Huessy Part 1
PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOUL Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy Translated by Mark Huessy and Freya von Moltke ARGO BOOKS NORWICH, VERMONT 1 Practical Study of The Soul WHENEVER GERMAN PATRIOTISM heats up, there is a sharp increase in the tendency to "Germanize" foreign words. Suppos- edly having many foreign words makes it difficult for the masses to enter the halls of knowledge, and the masses are what publish- ers, politicians, and adult-education teachers want to reach. So all these "evil" foreign words are being translated. In store windows today you can see books entitled, "A Primer on Health" instead of "Hygiene"; "A Primer on Society" instead of "Sociology"; and "A Primer on Stars" instead of "Astronomy." Nevertheless, if you open these books, you will find that they still contain traditional academic and professional organization of material, train of thought, and presentation of argument. Only the title itself has really been translated. Even so, "mere" names contain a power which goes beyond the intention of their authors or speakers. For names contain spirit: the author of a new name like that will soon have to con- fess, "The spirits that I have summoned I can no longer get rid of," [Goethe, "Der Zanberlehrling"]. "A Primer on Stars" will never again be familiar old "Astronomy." New names have a way of leading to new thoughts, even if the author chose an everyday title without thinking much about it, following the advice of the community college's Dean of the faculty, or of his publisher, or of the German Language Association. These new thoughts, how- ever, will not at first occur to the innocent specialist himself, but f, Practical Study of The Soul 5 4 PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOUL advertising, "psycho-technology," and child psychology.
