HPC’s Annual Backpack to School Program is Underway! The Homeless Prevention Council’s 2019 Backpack to School program will run from July through September. Through the Backpack to School program, HPC provides Lower Cape students from kindergarten through high school with backpacks and supplies to support their academic efforts. The program is coordinated to meet the specific needs of each student by using back-to-school lists provided by teachers throughout the Lower Cape. This year, the Nauset Rotary Club is enhancing HPC’s Backpack to School program by organizing a shoe drive for children and youth living on the Lower Cape. The Rotary Club’s goal is to raise $5,000 by August 1st, 2019, which will provide 150 gift cards to support the purchase of new shoes for Lower Cape students at the beginning of the upcoming school year.

From Cape Cod to the Monterey Peninsula, from the Rocky Mountains to the Adirondacks, we’re celebrating gorgeous, welcoming communities. At Budget Travel, we are all about discovering affordable destinations that go far beyond the obvious vacation choices. Over the past fourteen years, a passionate and accomplished team of editors, writers, and photographers have had a blast bringing you a different kind of travel experience: The Coolest Small Towns in America. What makes a small town “cool”? We believe that it’s cool to reflect the principles upon which the United States was founded, including cultural and ethnic diversity, the free exchange of creative ideas, and an entrepreneurial spirit that lifts all citizens in a community. We believe it’s cool to welcome and celebrate a diversity of visitors, the way Provincetown, Massachusetts, has been welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers for decades. We believe it’s cool to live in harmony with nature, the way Pacific Grove, California, became Butterfly Town USA and Saranac Lake, New York, and its neighboring towns in Adirondack State Park have pursued a sustainable tourism industry that respects the region’s pristine lakes and mountains. We believe it’s cool to boast a vibrant downtown, cutting-edge cuisine, and a community spirit that makes visitors feel like friends, as all the towns on this year’s list do. Here, Budget Travel’s 14th annual 10 Coolest Small Towns in America, an editor-curated to-do list for 2019 and beyond.

Cape Cod National Seashore to Host Bike Safety Events on August 2 and 9

2019 marks the ninth year that Cape Cod National Seashore’s Bike Safety Committee has hosted bike safety events to provide awareness and reduce the occurrence and severity of bike accidents at the national seashore. This year’s “Bike Safety at the Seashore” events are slated for August 2 at Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown and August 9 at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Both events will run from 10 am to noon.

"Every year we medevac cyclists with serious head injuries to Boston hospitals,” said Superintendent Brian Carlstrom. “We need to get the word out about how to bike safely on Cape Cod. We're partnering with towns and businesses on the Outer Cape to sponsor events that encourage safe practices and teach young people and parents that it’s cool to wear a helmet, and it's the law."

Both events are free and open to the public. They feature helmet fittings, fun activities for kids, bicycle safety checks, and educational displays. Prizes for participation, such as helmets, bike accessories, and coupons may be available while supplies last. Educational topics will include how to fit a helmet properly, preparing for a ride with an ABC bicycle quick check, the consequences of a bicycle crash, and interesting facts about bicycle safety at the seashore. The event also promotes the fitness benefits of bicycling. Event support is provided by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore, volunteers, local bike shops, Ben and Jerry’s, and Outer Cape towns.

Province Lands Visitor Center is located at 171 Race Point Road, off Route 6 in Provincetown. Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at 50 Nauset Road at the intersection of Route 6 in Eastham.

ALL ARTISTS

"Little in Common: 2 Artists, 1 Show, All Beauty" is just that, a show of two dissimilar artists with quality and visual beauty as their only commonality. This special show features Marilene Sawaf and Michael Palmer, two mature artists with very distinct styles showcasing differing subject matter. "We made no effort to tie these two together with a theme. Their work is too individual, and each deserves a stand-alone show," Curator Steve Bowersock. "Space and timing don't allow for it, so they now each have a separate show - together. Two outstanding artists side by side, who share only the incredible quality and commitment of painters who have honed their craft and voice for decades."

THE MODERN MALES OPENS JULY 5TH, THROUGH JULY 23rd

Over the centuries he's cut an imposing even ridiculous figure, donned flowing gowns, ballooned breeches, Zoot suits, tuxedos, kilts and designer farmer jeans. Long hair, bowl cuts, buzz cuts, mullets and man-buns, have been recycled with a decade's twist through the centuries. Beards, mustaches, sideburns and the clean cut look have all taken their turns. The decade's silhouette often presents like a uniform, along with the time's cultural view of masculinity, and the sexual norm. Today things are looser, both in how we dress and what constitutes a man's role, his sexuality, and how he presents and carries himself in the public sphere.

So, who is this contemporary man? What does he look like? Does he cling to the past, move with the latest trend or embracing a truer self. Is he one of the "buds" in a multiple ethnicity group, a practice once frowned upon; an at-home dad; Wall-street Shark; body builder; transgender, or drag queen? "So, we're excited about this show, an exhibition that takes stock of the contemporary man in all his guises, as seen by the individual artist from all walks of life."

Exhibit Jurors are Realist Academy of Boston Assistant Director Julie Beck, and Bowersock. Invitational artists include a few of Bowersock's top painters including Darlou Gams and Jayne Adams. All exhibit is open to all art forms. "This exhibit feels part mystery and part celebration. First the mystery: what each submission might unfold - how do we see this changing landscape," he says. "And of course the celebration of the male, in all his faces, transitions and essences." More ...

Sweeney Slays the Critics and the Crowds! With abundant audiences, standing ovations, and a rash of rave reviews, our “Summer of Sweeney” at the Provincetown Theater is off to a bloody good start… “Enthralling. Soaring. A bundle of fun! The rich, deep voice of lead Tom Hewitt presides over the production like a powerful otherworldly presence. Top-notch vocal performances, the company finds all the emotion lurking in the corners of this operatic masterpiece. The Provincetown Theater’s Sweeney Todd reminds us what great theater is supposed to do.” - Cape Cod Times “Brilliant. Riveting. Breathtaking. The choral moments will reach down to your bones. Graceful, emotional, and jarring, Tom Hewitt’s thirst for revenge is terrifying. Her singing, beautiful, her energy unflagging, as Mrs. Lovett Trish LaRose is a revelation.” - Provincetown Banner Now thru August 29th, see our 40th anniversary production live at the Provincetown Theater (238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA) Mondays thru Thursdays at 7pm.

Provincetown breakwater, super 'Worm Moon" tide by Jay Critchley Greetings to the Swim for Life Community, Greetings to the Swim for Life Community,

It's time to officially announce the 32nd Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, set for September 7. For many of us it's an important tradition, one that anchors our lives and offers communal stability and inspiration. The Provincetown Community Compact thanks you for sharing a part of your lives with us, in the healing waters of Provincetown Harbor. Our beneficiaries also thank you for your generosity.

We all love our favorite t-shirts! Over the years, many of you have asked how you might acquire previous Swim t-shirts. Well, we have created The Compact Store with the last four Swim designs (we have mugs too!) from artists Zehra Kahn, Ellen LeBow with Andrea Pluhar, Bill Evaul and Allan McKinnon. Additional designs will be added periodically.

We sent out updated swimmer, boater and volunteer information around June 1, also with the new 2019 Swim design!

Enjoy the spring and thanks for your heartfelt commitment to this essential Provincetown tradition. Be sure to thank our business sponsors when you're in town.

Peace, Jay
