Contribution to the Fennoscandian distribution of Chionea Dalman, 1816 (Diptera, Limoniidae), with notes on the ecology. Norwegian Journal of Entomology 57, 166–176. Updated information is given on the distribution of Chionea araneoides Dalman, 1816 and C. crassipes Boheman, 1846 in Norway. While C. araneoides is very common in southern Norway, there are only two records in northern Norway. C. crassipes has been taken numerously and in several localities in Finnmark, but in southern Norway, only a few individuals have been found in three alpine sites. These may represent relict populations. C. lutescens Lundström, 1907 is reported new to Sweden. Three samples of C. crassipes from Oulanka national park in Finland confirm the few earlier records from this country. Information is given on phenology, temperature and weather conditions, as well as some ecological aspects for C. araneoides in southern Norway, based on long term data. The records below are listed according to the revised three countries, but in Norway not further south Strand-system (Økland 1981). INTRODUCTION Growing interest in soil respiration in Arctic environments has opened wide research fields in microbial physiology and models associated therewith (Shivaji 2004). Much interest has been focused on metabolism in cold environments, with special emphasis on CO2 and CH4 evolution from tundra soils (Nadelhoffer et al. 1997, Vourlitis and Oechel 1997a,b). For modeling approaches, however, it is important to include the variability of microbial communities and their reactions to temperature shifts, i.e., the possible individual adaptations to temperature spans and related shifts in Q10 values of metabolic activity, which may indicate significant alterations in metabolic processes that point to important ecological factors to consider in the study of soil biological processes (Nadelhoffer et al. 1991, Sjögertsen and Wookey 2002). Special attention must be paid to processes at the cellular and subcellular level, and to the enzymes and substrates involved: an investigative effort that constitutes a crucial step in linking landscape modeling to small-scale processes. Soil carbon loss, generally termed soil respiration, is principally due to microbial and root respiration. Its measure can be defined in three ways (Haber 1958), i) the “physiological line”, ii) the “physical line”, and iii) the “ecological line”. The physiological line is mainly focused on the efficiency of soil organisms (and roots) and the reaction potential to the various environmental influences.

The purpose was to give information on persons with Lappish connection resident in the tracts. Figures are previously published in Weekly Bulletin of Statistics no. 16-17/76 and New District Figures no. 4/76 for Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. Central Bureau of Statistics asked the author for an analysis of the information from the additional survey. In this article he tries to mark the bounds of the Lappish population and to give a description based on demographic and social characteristics.

The objects of study are the Wilderness Area Planning Projects in North Western Lapland (Finland). They are examined as cases of implementing nature management in practice adapting the global ideas of environmentalism and national objectives and interests. As a contrast surface are used corresponding cases of nature management in Western Finnmark (Norway). I inspect how the proposed institutional arrangements and argumentations related to nature management are produced and legitimized, and how reindeer herding is taken into consideration. In particular, I search for traces of environ- mentalism in the ways of constructing nature management. Environmentalism is understood as a kind of epistemological break in the principled ways of conceiving and arranging governance of nature. Related to it, I inspect how the new practices of nature management reframe the local ways of organizing use of nature, and how it is received in the local community. I approach the matter expressly from the perspective of reindeer herding, and inspect how the role and space of reindeer herding as a traditional land use form is affected. In particular, I am concerned about the relationship between the particular way of constructing nature management and the conflicts that pertain to implementing management.
